As usual I was a bad Anderfan and watched Grey's tonight. When I switched over to 360, during the commercials, I thought that Anderson looked a little tired. He's starting to get those little bags under his eyes that signal his need for rest. Little did I know, until I watched my recording, that he was in Vegas.
Why didn't someone let me know that Anderson was going to Vegas ? It would have been the best day for a road trip. DH and buddies left at 5 AM this morning for their annual trek into the forest that they refer to as the 'Great Elk Adventure'. I think it would be more accurate to call it the 'One Week in the Wild to Play Cards, Smoke Cigars, Eat Steak Cooked on a Campfire and Get Out of Work Adventure'. Anyway you look at it it's a win/win. He's communing with nature (I hate that) and I'm shopping for Christmas (he hates that). It makes for the perfect marriage.
I could have been in Vegas in a few hours to stalk, errrr I mean, run into the handsome Mr. Cooper.
So for those of you keeping track, Anderson has had quite the week. Tuesday he was in Dallas for the lecture at SMU. Wednesday night, before 360, he hosted the The Advertising Council's annual dinner at The Waldorf-Astoria, in NYC. And then Thursday in Vegas to interview the hosts of Comedy Relief, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg.
This year's Comedy Relief stars are Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, George Lopez, Sarah Silverman and Wayne Brady will host the show's satellite location in New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina victims are to benefit from the fund raiser, which will be broadcast live from Caesars Palace on HBO and on TBS, 9pm EST on Saturday night.
We're going to get 2 hours of prerecorded Anderson Friday night. I hate to say this, but I think it's the start of another Andervacation. As far as we know he has no public appearances scheduled until Wednesday, November 29th, in New Orleans. You know my track record for predictions is horrible, so let's hope I'm wrong again.
Unlike Ms. Sheryn, I enjoyed the discussion of the OJ Story. I know Lisa Bloom's connection to the OJ case, but I didn't know Jeffery Toobin's. His bio says he came to CNN from ABC, where he provided legal analysis on the O.J. Simpson civil trial. He also wrote a book entitled The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson.
I do think Anderson needs to develop a two night rule. Something to the effect that he can only cover a story for 2 nights, unless there's a significant new development. I still can't forget 360's coverage of the Neil Entwistle case. I'm almost afraid to ask, but I wonder if Entwistle was ever prosecuted for murdering his wife and daughter?
I was disappointed that 360 didn't cover the taser incident at UCLA on Thursday's show. I first read about it on the web, then the video was posted on You Tube. Keith also showed it on Countdown Thursday night. It's uncomfortable to watch, but it speaks volumes about the state of paranoia on today's post 9/11 world.

I noticed the bags under the eyes last night, too. Well, actually the first thing I noticed is that he's in bad need of a haircut. I missed the first 2 minutes, so I didn't figure out until 1/2 hour in that he was in Vegas. That might explain the bags. (Hey, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!)
Maybe he's not going on vacation, maybe he's going to kick back and actually work in NY all next week. What a concept!
I'm confused at first I thought they said they where in Vegas, then the said N. O. The announcer never said where they where nor did Anderson. Robin Williams said two different thing's. So does anyone k now where they where? When does he host the police ball in N. O.
Anthony
Sometimes when I walk across the carpet with my socks on and I touch something and I shock myself...I sort of loss my footing. The just tased this guy and there telling him to stand up and tase him again and tell him to stand up AS there tasing him???
Now Im not sure what the back story is to this but DAMN I hope he files complains against those cops.
Comic Relief is in Vegas and that's where Anderson was interviewing them. He also said several times that Comic Relief was being held "here". So, I think it's safe to assume he was there for 360. I wonder if he'll make an appearance on the show being that it's Katrina related. I guess I'll have to watch to find out :)
He totally could use some rest...
but...am I the only one who doesn't want him to get a haircut right now? I'm actually surprised he doesn't look tired MORE of the time with his schedule....
Van you are not alone. I gasped at Sydney's suggestion of a haircut. It's just getting to the 'run your fingers through it' length. And that takes my mind in a whole new direction! Guess I'll be sittin in the naughty chair if anyone needs me.
Phebe,
I KNEW I couldn't be alone!
Get thee to the naughty chair!
You know, normally I love the buzz cut look! I love his hair about 1 week after he gets it cut. Its almost perfect! But last night his hair looked amazing! (OMG, how fangurl is this comment!)
Phebe, you are far too dangerous over there alone! You better not be packing for Vegas!
OK, I didn't realize I'd poked a hornet's nest w/ the haircut remark! I didn't say it didn't look good (he looks good no matter what) - he just doesn't normally go this long without a cut. I suspect he's waiting until just before he goes to Iraq.
Phebe, you make an excellent point - don't know why my mind didn't go there (I must've been tired last night), but now that it has, move over and make room on the naughty chair!
I have to say that I thought his hair looked good last night. I was watching part of the show with my mom and she even commented on it. I was having a hard time focusing on anything being said since she was being all fangurl about his hair among other things!
I love his hair now too, the 'fingers through the hair' gave me a whole new perspective on it!
@rachel, I read the comments under the video, and apparently you can't be in that computer lab without having a Bruin card. I thought it was overkill, but I'm used to it. Ball State has their own wannabe cops too. Last year a campus cop shot and killed a student. He was drunk and tried to enter the wrong apartment. They got the call from the tenant that someone was trying to break in. Without talking to the guy to determining he was drunk and confused...he just killed him.
Hopefully AC is just taking a long weekend in Vegas. Ahhh...a new fantasy (hey, after 32 years of marriage you've gotta do something!)
If you can't stand criticism of Anderson don't read this! Was I the only one who noticed?! I have always been a big admirer of Anderson and "360" because I have always felt he was sincere and honest, and not the least bit arrogant, but last night he showed me something different.
I don't think he liked the criticism that he received through his emails regarding the O.J. Simpson story. Did anyone else hear him say we can choose to watch it or not, but that they considered this a news story? Also for someone who says he doesn't consider himself a celebrity and doesn't particularly like celebrities he chooses to be around them a lot.
I'll have to think about this awhile, but I must say, today I am disappointed in Anderson's attitude.
cooper1,
I'll have to go back and watch last night's show again...I thought AC said that there was "much diliberation" about airing the piece on OJ..."especially on my part". Lisa Bloom made the point that this was "legitimate news reporting".
I may have heard it wrong, though.
As far as the celebrity thing...it seems he likes comedians...remember how he acted with Dave Chappelle?
A bit of the "fan-actic" comes out even in the best of us at times!
BTW, didn't pay much attention to the hair. I'll have to take another look or two at that, also.
Every announcer I've heard lately says the same thing, if you choose not to watch it fine, don't watch it, and it was Lisa that said it's newsworthy. Fox news has been covering it a lot more than CNN, Greta Van Sustern spent her whole hour on it last night, showing all the interviews she's done with OJ over the years.
When he said you can choose to watch or not watch I think he was referring to the OJ interview not 360.
As for the hair issue, I'm one of the ones that likes it a bit longer. He could stand to wait an extra few weeks before sheering it off again :)
I don't think any of us will ever mutually agree on what should be broadcast on "360".
I do not take their selection too seriously, after all, it will be different the next day. There are so many bigger things in life to sweat about other than what choice CNN makes for a story.
I do think he looks amazingly good this week, i.e. fresh faced and youthful looking.
joanie, I did hear Lisa Bloom say this was a newsworthy story, of course she would say that, after all wasn't she one of the attorneys on the case? I know Anderson said that they (I suppose he meant he and the producers) discussed the relevance of the Simpson story, but I still think he was angry that he got so many emails to the contrary. It didn't help that this came on the heels of his less than complimentary comments about Lou Dobbs and CNN in an interview with Mark Morris Saturday in Buffalo, and the comments he made to Kevin Fryling at the UB Reporter:
"In the end, Cooper said, 'the public holds the power to demand serious stories on serious issues from the media because their choices as consumers control the medium. A true commitment to important issues lies in the hands of both the people and the reporters,' he said."
Anderson's interest in celebrities is not casual, he is always at the Oscar parties. It wouldn't matter, except that he repeatedly says that he veers away from celebrities (TV Guide).
bev, I don't know anything about Fox programming because I don't watch it, however, I wouldn't put it past them.
I was thinking about sending an email to Anderson about this, but based on his attitude towards criticism at this time I think I would be quickly and mercilessly "deleted."
Thanks for the feedback on my comments and for allowing me my "fifteen minutes," I needed it.
Count me in for the longer hair. At least he's not using the hairspray to hold the bangs back. Please no one say the word haircut around him or too loudly as I'm loving it long.
I think his year and a half of keeping on the go is finally getting to him. He did sound a bit crabby the last couple of nights. The guy needs a pillow, blanket and a nice long nap.
Pheobe, as for Neil Entwistle he goes to trial this coming April and the owners of the house he was renting have tried to sell it, but last I heard they had no takers, wonder why. See I do my homework and keep up on topics even if 360 and Anderson don't.
rachel, he IS suing. as well he should.
i was completely gobsmacked when i watched that video. as a librarian, yes, when someone refuses to follow policy, you have the right to ask them to leave, and to call security/police if they refuse to comply. but the overreaction of the ucla security officers was completely unnecessary. they had the guy in cuffs already!! wtf?!
@all now that we've said we like Andy's hair longer, what is he going to do this weekend or Monday - get a haircut. sigh.
I think Anderson may attend some of these events such as the Vanity Fair Oscar Party because of his Mom. I think he attends as sort of a proxy for her. Now that my Mom is older and not able to get around as well, my sister and husband will attend family parties and celebrations since she can't or doesn't feel up to attending. Anderson may be doing the same type of thing.
As for looking tired, I don't know what Anderson you were watching but he didn't look tired to me, he looked hot and sexy and gorgeous. I loved his hair and all those giggles! *thud* Anderlaughter is like beautiful music. It makes you feel good!
I didn't record last night, but when I watched it I interpreted what he said as siding with those of us who thought too much time was spent on the OJ thing. When he made the comment about people watching or not watching, he was talking about the Fox OJ program.
He made it perfectly clear the night before that he wouldn't watch it or read the book because he thought it should be boycotted. He even brought it up again last night, wanting to know who was advertising on the program so the boycott could be extended to them.
Maybe it is wishful thinking, but I think there are times when Anderson doesn't want to do the show content but is overruled my management. When he said they had ‘much deliberation’ I got the impression that this was one of those times.
Even Brian Williams says that he appreciates getting the emails about his coverage...good or bad. I think the 'negative' emails help those broadcasters who want to grow and become better, become more in tune with what their viewers wnat.
He has always been around celebrities because of his parents. I’ve read about the swan-thing with Capote before. Truman and Charlie Chaplin were often around the house. There is a book called ‘TRIO’ by Aram Saroyan, about Oona Chaplin, Carol Matthau & Gloria Vanderbilt. Here is a brief comment of the bio: “Now Aram Saroyan, the son of one of the three -- with lifetime access to the others -- has captured this glittering trio in a narrative that is at once intimate, funny, bittersweet, and as deeply moving as the friendship it describes. In their own cadences, Saroyan evokes the voices of the individual women: of Oona, the ethereal brunette tormented by ehr father's neglect and redeemed by her now fabled romance with Chaplin; of Gloria, fated by her father's death and the custody trial between her mother and aunt to become a paradox of shyness in blinding limelight; of Carol, the madcap blonde whose blithe gaiety and touching faith were forged in her searing early experience as a foster child. And even as we come to know the women individually, we see the strong bond that made them -- from their early days as debutantes in pre war Manhattan - a trio: a study in eerie similarity and in unquestioning loyalty. In each of their lives the silver spoon was tarnished by early tragedy -- the experience of having been, in one sense or another, orphaned -- and all three grew up to enter early into deep, sometimes destructive relationships with powerful, creative men. Through it all, from the forties through the eighties, surrounded by a cast of friends (and suitors -- and husbands) ranging from Truman Capote, Irwin Shaw, and J.D. Salinger, through Sidney Lumet, Kenneth Tynan, and Leopold Stokowski, to Walter Matthau and Charlie Chaplin, the three women remained firm friends. Even when separated by a continent or an ocean, the three -- with the quiet strength, the tensile affection, the saving humor of shared love -- saw each other through.”
I was wondering how Anderson felt about Robin Williams bit on Capote, but I think I read somewhere that Anderson made fun of him too. In fact, I think it is in Gloria’s book. The only time I’ve heard him slam celebrities is when he shared his opinion of celebrities’ children who do nothing but shop, like Paris Hilton, etc.
Sorry this is so long.
Okay people, mark your calendar and get your camera out, because this is never going to happen again. I'm going to disagree/criticize Anderson. I think he's too hard on Paris Hilton. I mean,at the time the girl was in her late teens/early twenties and think about it; if Anderson had a daughter don't you think he would spoil her and not throw her out into the world at that young age. Yes, Anderson may not have had that lifestyle at that age, but no one should have to bear the pain and loss that he did. Anderson going out on his own, so to speak, was his choice and decision, no one pushed him into it.
*ducks out of the way of objects being thrown*
Pixie - I'm not positive but I looked at Anderson when Robin was doing the bit on Truman Capote and if I remember correctly, he was laughing along with everyone else. He looked like he was having a really good time.
prixie gresh, I have read both of Gloria's books, Wyatt's book, Anderson's book, "Capote" by Clarke, "Party of the Century," and others so I know about Anderson's parents' relationships with celebrities. However, when I see him with celebs, his mother is not there, especially at the fashion shows. I just get a little queasy when the rich and famous try to suggest they are just like "us." It gives me that "Marie Antoinette moment". Wyatt understood what it meant to be poor, but although I can appreciate what Anderson has done in the past, he has always had the benefit of working with a "net."
By the way, in his book, Anderson said Truman Capote's voice made him "giggle."
Anderson has said a number of negative things about celebrities. On the Cinemax show "Shaken and Stirred" he made fun of the fact that they talk about who designed their clothes while being interviewed on the Red Carpet and he thought it was ridiculous for them to get gift bags. In "TV Guide" (May 22, 2005) he said he "veers away from celebrities" and that the spoiled rich kids on "Tiara Girls" should be lined up and shot. Also, do you remember the cracks he used to make on the "Nnth Degree?" There are others, I can't remember at the moment. It is his right to hang out with who he wants, but he shouldn't deny it, it makes him look disingenuous.
I don't know if anyone watched Bill Maher last night, but he touched on the subject of OJ Simpson and "junk news" and the responsibility of the media to weed it out.
Robin Williams was kind of funny on "360." I am interested in what Stephen Colbert will say on HBO tonight during "Comic Relief!"
I hope next week is better. I'd like to feel good about Anderson again.
