Breaking News was first on the agenda on Tuesday night's AC360. Anderson focused on Senator McCain's gaff concerning The Surge and the Sunni awakening.
Time's Joe Klein, David Gergen and Ed Henry discussed the McCain blunder plus others that have been cropping up lately. The Gerg told us that he thinks these McCain errors will be blamed on his age, by his critics. Ed Henry read a statement by the McCain campaign addressing the age issue and pointing out the errors that have been made by Obama. Joe Klein felt the McCain errors were not that big a deal, but what is a big deal is how he overstates the fate of Iraq in stark terms that are inaccurate.
Have you noticed the different pronunciations pundits, anchors and reporters have of Nuri Al-Maliki's name? I've always said it the way that AC does (mal-i-kee), but lately I've been hearing more and more people on television pronounce it ma-leak-ee.
After the McCain discussion Anderson went straight to Chad Myers in the CNN's Atlanta Weather Center. We learned that Dolly would hit land Wednesday, probably a cat 1. Chad said that the hurricane will hit in a fairly unpopulated area of Texas, but the heavy rains will be wide spread. Gary Tuchman reported live from South Padre Island, Texas in his nifty red CNN slicker.
Tuesday's political points and pundits:
• Candy Crowley began her report by covering Obama's visit to Iraq. She detailed Obama's meeting with General Petraeus and his resistance to Obama's plan to withdraw the troops. I wonder if Obama, if elected President, will replace Petratus?
• Ed Henry gave us a glimpse at Dana Perino not talking about Senator Obama. In her press briefing she included a dig or two at the Senator she wasn't going to talk about.
• Time's Joe Klein spoke of The Surge saying McCain was correct in the strategy of the surge but Obama is correct that the protracted war in Iraq proved to be a diversion from what should have been the real war....in Afghanistan.
• Klein also spoke of the McCain campaign of 2000 that was fresh and different from the normal Republican candidate. After losing that race McCain has gravitated toward Bush and is no longer the media darling he once was.
God knows McCain isn't fresh and different any longer...he's a Bush clone.
• Bill Bennett and James Carville were next up with a discussion of some of the McCain blunders of the last few days and the Obama junket. The boys played nice with no real shouting or nastiness. I even think they almost agreed that this is just not John McCain's week.
Mr. Carville looked exceptionally dapper.....I love that tie. Reminds me of two ties that I've seen someone else wear long, long ago. :)
David Mattingly reported that a Grand Jury in Texas has indited Warren Jeffs and 4 unnamed co-conspirators for sexual assaults on girls under the age of 17. I always enjoy Mattingly's updates but find I can get more detailed reports on my local news. Mike Watkiss reported tonight that he strongly suspects one of those unnamed co-conspirators will be Willie Jessop. Does that name sound familiar? He's the big windbag who acted as a spokesperson for members of the YFZ Ranch, appearing on LKL and AC360. Jessop is another piece of work, cut of the same cloth as Jeffs.
Speaking of Mike Watkiss, he was recently awarded the Arizona Women's Partnership's 2008 Humanitarian Award. The all-volunteer philanthropic non-profit organization works with at risk women and children. They honored Mike for his work on bringing the story of polygamy to the world.
Do you remember the other night when Drew Griffin did the story about getting screened by the TSA, yet again, on a flight to Louisiana? I wondered at the time what story he was working on in Louisiana (I secretly hoped for a NOLA update). Tonight Drew's story on racial injustice in Louisiana aired, and what an ugly tale of racism it was. A white police officer killed a handcuffed young black man with repeated taser shots. This week the corner's report was released and it showed that the victim was not under the influence of drugs and the coroner bluntly told Drew that it was a homicide. Charges against the police officer are still pending.
Erica Hill did the follow up report on the 911 tapes that were released today dealing with the murder of North Carolina mother Nancy Cooper. This is a really sad story that is still unfolding and surrounded by rumor and innuendo. Don't you wonder why certain murdered mothers/wives stories catch the national attention and others don't? I would think that national exposure might help the police catch the murderer in many cases, but probably not in this case. The facts all seem to point to the husband. So why does this story rate a second look while others beg for attention? I'm not sure.
Thanks to Sapphire for clipping Tuesday's Beat 360. There was no 'The Shot' on Tuesday night.

Writer Monica Collins recently spent a morning with Anderson Cooper for an upcoming cover story for USA Weekend. Here's an excerpt from her article, as reported on the Who's News Blog:
“The Cooper confab began early at Live With Regis And Kelly where he guest-hosted for Regis Philbin, which Cooper again said he loves doing it because Kelly Ripa is a favorite of his. After the show, the interview moved to Cooper’s New York City office at CNN where the globe-trotting anchor admitted that he doesn’t read anything about himself — including the 'handsomest Q-Tip in the newsbiz' line on a waggish media blog or Fox's Greta Van Susteren recent put-down of his CNN show as 'a marketing experiment.'
Known to be protective of his privacy, Cooper couldn’t have been more cordial throughout the interview as he answered queries near (he only has a carton of old chicken curry in his refrigerator at the moment), far (a glistening lake in the Congo is the most beautiful sight yet in his worldwide travels) and many places in between (his thoughts on the late Tim Russert). And while he may be guarded at points he has such electric blue eyes and a very engaging manner that you can't help but feel he's sharing as much as he can."
Be sure to check out USA WEEKEND's Aug. 14 issue for even more about Monica’s time with Anderson Cooper.
My DVR guide says AC360 will be on at 11 on Wednesday night, after Black in America. They played the wrong tease at the end of the second hour on Tuesday night and Anderson said 'Next up American Morning, I will see you later tonight'. This is the taped ending they usually put on the repeat that runs right before AM (duh!) but I must assume that it means we get a live AC360 with AC on Wednesday. Until then~Phebe
All Things Anderson is a blog dedicated to CNN's AC360 and its host Anderson Cooper.

As always, as an international reader of your blog, we hope you could post the issue on ATA or if it is available online, hope you could provide a link. I would really want to know what he said on that interview. Thanks, we can always count on you!
I found the first 30 minutes of 360 to be boring, but the last 30 minutes were pretty good.
Drew Griffin's piece was interesting. I think the police screwed up big time with that one. Tasering a person 7 times is a bit much.
The Nancy Cooper story is so sad. I wonder how long it will take them to start looking at the husband.
The cover story for USA Weekend sounds interesting. Can'r wait to read it.
Disappointed we are not seeing correspondent work from the field from Erica while, as you said, there are so many other stories begging for attention. CNN is totally wasting a resource, in my opinion.
Perhaps Anderson could have been a little more clear that 360 will be live at 11, not 10. If the average viewer is like me, all I heard was Black in America at 9 so I started to assume that perhaps Anderson was eluding that 360 would be preempted by this.
So according to the Buzz 360 is going to be rehashing all of the black issues discussed in Soledad's special. They may do a little other news it said. That TOTALLY sucks and I may not even watch it!
I am just SO totally disgusted with 360!! This week shows have sucked and now tonight's crap. I guess they'll do the same thing tomorrow too. UUGGHH!!
I really, really don't think that I am going to bother with it. They sure are doing everything that they can to run off the fans it seems!
I just want to know how is it that Doss runs both 360 and Campbell's show but Campbell's show has been SO much better than 360 here lately. I don't get that at all. Is it the anchor's input? Because it sure seems like Anderson is just going through the motions and that he has lost interest in 360. While Campbell is all gung ho for her show.
right now all I have to say is I really miss that tie that looked like James Carville's.....it is my favourite tie and it seems to have vanish in to the never to seen again pile of ties :(
Back in the day I Used to rush home from work to catch upon news from 360. Not anymore. What happend to our favorite news and newsman? I went to the website yesterday, and it says something about live from the studio in NYC. Nothing about getting out and seeing the world, I never thought I'd move on fron AC, but I may.
Hasn't Anderson said that he gets bored very easily (in an interview in answer to a question about vacations or something). Maybe he is bored of his job as it is now. Maybe he just gets bored easily. Runs in two year cycles.
@ Anon 7/23/08 8:10 AM...I hear ya! I used to not be able to wait to see 360. But now a days to be honest I barely pay attention when I do watch it. It is just so bad!
What happened to actually getting news...I mean real news? Not the political crap that they shove down our throats each night. And there is NO such thing as a slow news day! There are always stories to tell! They just choose not to.
360 is like the rehash program. They just rehash everything that was on earlier. I am dissapointed that 360 is going to rehash Black in America. Like we are too stupid to figure out what we just saw on there. We don't need it rehashed.
Regarding Soledad's piece tonight, it made me think of Miles O'Brien -seems he is barely on at all. CNN seems to have a lot of correspondents who don't get much air time and are good. What do these people do when we don't see their assignments?
I liked last night's show, I thought it was interesting and certainly not crap.
I guess there will be no 360 on CNN Int. tonight :(
Good thing I'll be able to catch up here!
Gee, I don't even remember that tie, so it must have fallen behind the closet a long time ago, lol.
Thanks for the heads up on that article, I hope I'll find that magazine somewhere!
Thanks Phebe!
I too often wonder about the inconsistent pronunciation of names and places on tv. According to the Voice of America, the correct pronunciation of the Iraqi PM's name is
NOOR-ee kah-MAHL al MAL-ih-kee.
They have a website where you can look up names that are in the news. I'll post the link if you like.
The show was okay, there has been some times I been bored out of my mind. Yet lately they stop showing so much politics and been a little more newsy than it has been in a long time.
Still it could be better. I notice him saying see you tonight and I was like, what? He almost did two hour last night.
I'm resigned to the fact that for the next four months there's going to be more political news than anyone really wants. Unless there's a catagory 5 hurricane or California finally breaks off and falls into the ocean.
Nothing against California but it would get Anderson out of the studio and into his scuba gear, "Following the commercial break, I'll show you what Los Angeles looks like now under 50 feet of water."
Jaanza
Let's have hope blog buddies..certainly today it'll be a good show, at least that's what i always believe until the show starts in the CNN International. Yesterday the second half was very good to watch. I Hope the police catch very fast Nancy Cooper murder and about the hurricane i hope the people who is in his path don't get hurt!! Now another stuff..Ed Henry i've found he's very handsome!! And i really hope the rehash of Black in America don't happen because if it happen i'll go watch Maxwell Smart and Get Smart on Nickelodeon!! And Anderson Cooper 360 "GET SMART" don't forget the world it's more and more then the political subject!!! PS: If i was a report the last place i would like to be is in the middle of an island that is the hurricane path!!!
Being a NYT reader, on the week ends, I do not get the USA Weekend either, so it would be much appreciated if the AC interview could be shared with your readership and bloggers. Many thanks in advanced anticipation of your cooperation.
I think we should all stop complaining about what is being presented on 360 and what isn't. We don't like it when AC isn't there and when he is, all we do is complain. If he's getting bored, and there's a good possibility he is, then he might just surprise all with a "brand new gig."
I live in that strange "mountain" time zone you rarely hear about so all this talk of when Anderson will actually be on just has my mind boggled.
I haven't had time to comment much the last few weeks but thought I would chime in and say it would be interesting to see Anderson in swimwear without a shirt. I would love to see how all the workouts have changed his physique since he took a turn in that tanning booth several years ago. For shame, I think I might be in danger of becoming one of those Cougar ladies :0D You know I really hate that term but I guess it could be worse they call men like me DOB's in the real world. Of course, in Hollywood and D.C. they call them "distinguished older gentlemen"...go figure!
Well I am off for a little weekend break...going to Idaho. Too bad AC won't be there this weekend. We are going to a POW/MIA remembrance rally to meet up with some of Mr Em's old Navy buddies...should be a wild weekend. They are having a Motorcycle Rodeo. I'm not sure how safe it will be with a bunch of middle-aged men trying to do tricks on Harley's but I imagine there will definitely be some laughs!
Tomorrow is Utah's Statehood Day so I get an extra day off and am taking full advantage of it. Hope you all have a great rest of the week. Take Care!
@ Cindy – 5.11 am and 8.51 am – 7/23/08
I’ve got to tell you Cindy, I am appalled absolutely appalled at your comments, especially your 5.11 am comment on Wednesday July 23rd. At the same time, I am disgusted at the immense disrespect you’ve displayed not only at the African American community, but also toward the work and research of content that goes into a Special like this. I was so revolted by your comments, I had to walk away from my computer for a day, and allow my anger and disgust to subside before responding to your comments.
In part, here are the two most despicable comments you made on Wednesday’s Blog and I quote...
One:
“So according to the Buzz 360 is going to be rehashing all of the black issues discussed in Soledad's special.”
Two:
“I am just SO totally disgusted with 360!! This week shows have sucked and now tonight's crap. I guess they'll do the same thing tomorrow too. UUGGHH!!”
Have you ever thought maybe one of the reasons CNN puts such a huge emphasis on Specials like this one is in part to EDUCATE individuals like yourself who display total disrespect for the African American community and struggles they go through every single day versus “rehashing all of the black issues” as you so disrespectfully put it.
Do you even grasp what it takes to undertake a controversial issue of this magnitude and shed light on the struggles, the plight, and the possible destiny of your fellow-African Americans if something does not change, and a call for this CHANGE that needs to be immediate?
What’s even more disgusting and disheartening is that fact that you have the audacity to call this Special “CRAP”.
Can you even fathom the amount of work that goes into putting together a Special like this. The hard work of men and women, of Professionals, of individuals who struggle every single day to make a difference in their communities, to make a difference in the lives of children, to make a difference in the lives of young men and women who may be destined for a life down the wrong path, I could go on, but do your GRASP that fact that there are hard working individuals who want to Call To Attention the possible plight of the African American Community if some things do not change? Can you understand that?
Maybe you should take a step back and take a long hard look and your self, your priorities and your disposition and tolerance of your fellow-citizens and your fellow-Americans be they of whatever race, creed or colour.
You may want to ask yourself this....
Is this the kind of intolerance you share in other aspects of your life?
Is this the kind of disdain you express in other people’s professions, of their hard work tossed aside by YOUR flippant, careless and disrespectful comments?
If so, you may want to take a long hard look at yourself and where your priorities lay in life.
@anonymous 2:45, I have no way of knowing if you are a regular reader of our blog or someone who just happened across us. And I don't speak for Cindy or any other commenter, but I would like to give you a plausible explanation for some of the negative comments concerning BIA. I think it has to do with the mood here at ATA, more than the content of the program. Many of us have been disappointed with the direction that AC360 has taken the last few months. It seems like all we get is politics and more politics, unlike in days past when we got news of the Middle East along with news from around the world. When AC360 posted on their website that Wednesday's program would be politics and a discussion of BIA with Soledad some of our regulars were disappointed. I don't think it was because they didn't feel that the BIA documentary was important, I believe it was because they realized we would not be getting world news again Wednesday or Thursday.
I can't speak for everyone but that's how I interpreted it. I do agree with you that using the word crap might have been a little harsh, but I really didn't take it as meaning BIA was crap, but more that AC360 was for yet again skipping coverage of the war, etc (the list is long).
As to your assessment of the work and dedication that goes into making a special like BIA, I couldn't agree with you more. CNN, as always, is heads above their competitors with their outreach programming. Sapphire will be posting a complete review of both nights of BIA at our sister blog All Things CNN tomorrow. Be sure to check it out.
@the anonymous commenter who did not get their comment posted. I appreciate your point of view and thank you for sharing your opinions with me.
I think that posting your comment would hurt the feelings of some of our regulars, and I'm not willing to do that. These people are here for us day in and day out and we appreciate hearing what they have to say. I don't always agree with them (and obviously you don't either) but they have a right to express themselves.
If you want to rewrite your point of view without the quotes and finger pointing I will give it consideration.
Hey Phebe – I respect your decision not to post my response/comments but appreciate the fact that you understand where I was coming from with my response to same, as I understand your stance and your predicament.
You and I both know where we stand. The only element I can reemphasize is RESPECT, that’s all.
