Denver, Day 1

As we learned on primary nights, marathon coverage of events never give us as much of Anderson as the normal single-hour program does. He is, in fact, more or less co-anchoring with Wolf Blitzer this evening. So I'm pulling clips as they strike me, we'll see how late we go tonight.

First, though, a couple bonus clips from before the convention started -- Michael Ware is in New York and was on American Morning to speak about Joe Biden's Iraq policy as well as the general policies that the next president will have to deal with in ending the war there:

video

video

The San Francisco Chronicle/SFGate.com had a cute bit about Anderson entering the convention hall today:

Anderson Cooper is People, too

Denver -- Game on at the Democratic convention here, and the first order of biz is going through security. Everybody has to -- even CNN's Anderson Cooper. He was in line next to me and we chatted extensively about it.

Me: Even you gotta stand in line?

AC: Sure, man. (Turns back to his Blackberry.)

And now, on with the show...

Wolf had to introduce some of the members of (drumroll, please) The Best Political Team on Television, and Anderson has a bit of a chuckle:

video

John King is in Denver with a portable Magic Wall/Map, and he's got some great lighting in this segment:

video

What separates CNN from the networks? Wolf and Anderson break it down:

video

James Carville was less than impressed by the lack of fireworks on Day 1. Of course, Anderson would NEVER express such a bias *cough*:

video

We'll see how the Tuesday fireworks go, but Day 1 was certainly a success from CNN's vantage point. Now, can we get a screen put up behind these guys so we don't have to watch people waving at the camera? Please?

I like the pic of AC on his blackberry. He's so addicted it's cute...LOL!!!

The convention coverage wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be somewhat boring, it wasn't all that bad.

Michelle Obama's speech did save the night,IMHO. I thought she hit all the right notes and came across just as she should, soft and less strident and I loved the kids. Very effective.
CNN, however, must stop scanning the audience and focusing on people we don't know and start letting us see, visually who is speaking on the panel and in NYC.
I don't want to hear David Gergen's voice, I want to see him, not the visual of the entire
delegation. I know what people carrying signs look like, once, twice, enough already.
Caroline Kennedy looked well, and her Uncle Teddy gave a great endorsement for Obama. Glad he made it.

I remember AC saying he uses his blackberry so he doesn't have to talk to people or was it his cell phone. Either way, this seemed like a classic case of the same.

I for one am a little disappointed in CNN's
comments going out over the airwaves.
It was sad to see Campbell Brown to have
to step in and say that David Gergen and
James Carville missed the point of tonight's
convention, And then following with a entire
hour of nothing but Republicans for a full hour
of Larry King.It is just not good tv. It is down
right stupid, turned the channel to C-Span.
Also, not too long ago I was watching Bloomberg
and apparently police intercepted an plot to
assassinate Barack Obama. I think they really
handled the Michelle Obama speech badly.
To have the talking heads on CNN just did not
work. You had Ted Kennedy who is bravely
battling brain cancer give a powerful and
emotional speech as well as Michelle Obama's
with delegates crying during both speeches.
Oddly enough after the Michelle Obama speech
CNN lost it's mind and complained there were
no Bush attacks. I guess they were so buty
being full of themselves that they really did
not listen to the Kennedy speech. It was not
Michelle's role to attack.

AC and the pundits (especially Carville and Gergen) spent too much time talking about the lack of excitement and fireworks for the convention's first night - Nancy Pelosi and Claire McCaskill's speeches weren't even shown. Hilary Rosen said Pelosi's speech was strong and tough on Bush, I would've like to have heard it. Ted Kennedy and Michelle Obama gave wonderfully moving speeches - I'm sure they aren't the only ones who can provide those moments, if only CNN would just show them.

I actually like the commentary. CNN has the speeches available on their website for people who are interested. IMO, it would be pretty boring if all they showed were the speeches.

Thanks for the clips, they make up for the fact that I can't watch the Convention. I do have Michelle Obama's speech (I hope, lol) on tape and I'm gonna watch that later with great interest!

I'm glad that Anderson listened to me *ahum* and blogged from the Convention, it's always nice to get some backstage info.

Thanks Cyn! (love the pics of Crackberry addict Cooper!)

I enjoyed the convention coverage a lot more than I thought I would. Even when the conversation was just more of the same old same old, it was fun to watch the crowd of people in back of TBPTOT trying to get on camera.

CNN still has no coverage of the foiled assassination plot on their website. Strange.

Wouls someone PLEASE call the security folks in the Pepsi Center, and have them move all those people away from Anderson and company- that are waving at the camera,or on the phone on camera,or waving signs at the camera??

They are becoming a pain already, and it was only day one.

Campbell didn't have to actually say Carville and Gergen missed the point (if that is what she felt) but rather she could have been displomatic and simply offered hers. OK, she has a different perspective, whether it is right or wrong, and has the right to that. But both men (gergen) have advised presidents and should be respected)

Last night's convention was completely boring. Ted's tribute and speech was the only great thing. Michelle's speech was full of the same old stuff that she has always said, nothing new. And I felt that she was very subdued more so than usual. I think she was playing the not too forceful role as they are trying to change her image. It didn't work for me. It made her look like she was acting. She should be who she is and not play a role.

CNN's coverage stunk! They need to show the speakers as they give the speeches...all of them not just the ones that they deem as important. I tuned in to see the convention not to see or hear them speak. Their coverage was sub par at best.

I wish you would have had the clip of Anderson asking Caroline Kennedy if there was a position for her with Obama if he wins--her answer was great --she actually wants to be part of the Best Political Team on Television! Very clever!!

Good morning everyone, hope no one is feeling political overload yet, it's only day 2 of the first convention!
For those of you who wanted more of the speeches and less of the banter why don't you switch to CSPAN? I did for the Pelosi speech then switched back to CNN for the discussion. I liked the way CNN handled their coverage, the discussion (especially with Begala, Carville and Brazile) was far more interesting than most of the speeches, imo. If you don't agree give CSPAN a try tonight.
The NYC panel seemed to be a bust, at least for me. I wonder if they are there mainly to take over if there are technical problems, etc in Denver? Otherwise they added little to the program, which is a shame. Gergen should have been in Denver not in NYC.

@ Phebe – 7.51 am – I absolutely agree with your comments 100%. I truly enjoyed every moment of CNN’s coverage of since the announcement of Sen. Obama’s V.P. pick. I absolutely enjoyed every moment of it. I was even up and awake way after the 3.00 am announcement of the VP selection on Friday night/Sat morning, and right through to the 3.00 p.m. speeches Sen. Obama and Sen. Biden gave on Saturday.

I agree the New York Panel looked thoroughly bored out of their minds. If anyone saw Campbell Brown when she gave her two cents when Anderson asked her the question as to her thoughts on Mrs. Obama’s speech as well as Sen. Kennedy’s speech, she looked totally miserable. Campbell Brown looked like she hated being left behind in the NY studio.

Soledad is getting more coverage and air time during the day, each day from 9.00 am to 4.00 until Wolf takes over in TSR at 4.00 p.m. (EST), versus Campbell in the evening.

I am truly enjoying the Co-anchoring between Wolf and Anderson, John King and Gloria, plus all their guest panellists.

You folks are sooooo lucky going through this process and watching this process is pure Democracy at Work. I had to run out yesterday afternoon at 4.00 p.m. to donate blood and was dreading missing the coverage, and Guess What Folks? I’m not even an American, and I don’t even live in the U.S.

You guys have no idea how awesome it is to watch real democracy at work, despite all the animosity and the “political war and bickering” between the “Clintonites and the Obamacans” at least you folks have a voice and a medium to exercise opinions and political preferences. Don’t ever take this process for granted.

@ Cindy – 6.09 am – your comments as stated “CNN's coverage stunk” is absolutely uncalled for. I think CNN has done a fantastic job with this entire process and are truly Professionals at this process.

My fear of watching next week is watching Wolf and Campbell Co-anchor in St. Paul while Anderson is in New York. Now that would really suck!

Someone on this blog asked about the “threat to Sen. Obama” and the arrests on Sunday – there is a press conference this afternoon at 2.00 p.m. MT (I believe) on this whole fiasco.

Can’t wait for the rest of the week’s headliners and special guests.

Enjoy the rest of your day folks!

Thanks for the update guys and gals. Maybe I'll just fastfoward through the tapes as it looks like nothing big happened.

I think Mr. Crackberry Addict pulls out the crutch because he's painfully shy when he doesn't have a microphone in his hand.

Funny how people are attracted to the types of occupations that force them to work through their deficiencies - you HAVE to talk to people when you're a reporter. But it's from a position of power, so it's safe.

I can't wait for the election to be over. Mainly because I want He Who Shall Not Be Named :-) to give us another book. I heard some nice man donated most of the proceeds of his last book to charity...hmmm, wonder who that was...

I liked the coverage last nite. I was expecting it to be boring, but it wasn't. I hope the rest of the week is like last nite.

If Anderson is going to be in the studio during the republican convention I think I'll just skip watching it. I didn't want to watch it anyway.

I loved Michelle Obama's speech. I felt like it was touching and said a lot about who they were, which was the point.

Unlike some, I did not think the speech was the same old thing as she's said before, in fact, if you've listen to her speeches at all you'd know it was much more personal and emotional than anything else she's done. I think even the Republicans agreed that it was a genuine and moving speech. Good for her.

I also have to agree with Phebe, it would have been boring to sit through some of the speeches that really weren't dynamic or didn't really say anything. What another channel if you don't like, I thought they did a great job.

And Wow, Paul Begalia really didn't like the Rep. that spoke. That was really funny! Also, what happen to the promised video of Paul and Donna Brazile dancing? Maybe it'll show up on CNN's website!

:)

I flipped around from CNN to MSNBC to Project Runway on Bravo.

CNN was doing a good job until the start of Michelle Obama's speech. On MSNBC, they stopped talking to their political analyst and listened to her speech right from the start.
On CNN they were in a commercial break. Couldn't they stop their own commercial break to cover Michelle's speech right from the beginning?

Anderson not going to the repub convention could be a good thing. It will leave him free to cover whatever havoc Gustav will wreak.

Anonymous said...

Cindy: have you considered watching another channel tonight if CNN's coverage stunk so much?

Cyn said...

For all their baying for "red meat," when Dennis Kucinich started raising hell, CNN was doing a cutesy piece about dancing. They caught about the last minute of it. I hope they show the entire speech next hour ... if not, check it out online. He got the crowd on their feet and cheering. It was a great moment.

@6:15 AM: I'd love to see the clip of Anderson's interview with Caroline. Caroline rarely gets so involved and I truly believe she sees "her Dad" in Obama. She also looked lovely.
@10:19 PM: I totally agree with your comments about the after effect of Michelle Obama's speech and the lack of real CNN commentary. That the convention wasted the first two hours was repeated over and over. No, CNN wasted the first two hours complaining and not showing us at least a clip of who was speaking.
But what do we know, we're just the viewer.

Unforutinately Campbell Brown is on now. Do we know when AC will be on???

@anonymous 2:21pm, I for one am gald AC won't be at the republican convention, I din't want to watch it anyway.

Anonymous said...

Is Anderson not on tonight? Campbell Brown is there with Wolf and he just said she would be there all week and at the Republican convention next week.

Anonymous said...

Campbell Brown has come all the way from NY since last night's show and is now doing the convention with Wolf. Wonder what is up with that!? And where is Anderson? Wasn't Campbell supposed to stay in NY this week then be in the Republican convention?

Anonymous said...

anon 4:07: I was just wondering the same thing about Campbell. I thought she was staying in New York this week while Anderson attended the Democratic convention and then Campbell attend the Repub. convention while Anderson stayed in New York.

Can someone clarify this for me? Maybe I misunderstood.

What time did Anderson come on last night?

Anonymous said...

Campbell is in Denver now? Where is Anderson?

A blogger reported seeing him having scrambled eggs and french toast for breakfast at the CNN Grill today.

A few bloggers have reported Anderson filming a Daily Show bit today.

Anonymous said...

@anonymous 4:15 Anderson started at 7PM ET last night, the same time Campbell started tonight. He blogged just before he went on air.

Phebe said...

We've had tons of emails about the change in plans for the Dem's convention. Per information we received from CNN AC was supposed to anchor with Wolf all this week and Campbell was supposed to be in NYC. We've sent some emails to see if there is an official statement about the switch. Everyone at CNN is very busy so I'm just not sure our little inquiry will be addressed promptly. We'll let you know if we hear anything back.

Anonymous said...

Phebe: and why would they switch "midstream" like this, with Anderson on one night already. Was Campbell in New York last night?

It seems rather curious.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if Anderson did something wrong and got banished.

carly said...

im glad im not the only one who is freaking out that anderson is not on.....what the crap is going on..... where is our beloved silver fox.....

Anonymous said...

I wonder if something happened between Anderson and Wolf? Or maybe Anderson is sick.

Anonymous said...

Was Campbell in New York last night? If she was, they flew her out in one big hurry, then.

Anonymous said...

OK...Wolf just said that Campbell will be with them all week up until the Republican convention. HMM...maybe Anderson got in trouble for his remarks last night.

Aries Moon said...

Did the Daily Show appearance sidetrack AC or was he a little bored with the convention (at times he appeared to be, IMO) and didn't want to spend as many hours covering as he did yesterday? Who knows, but if he doesn't at least show up at his normal 10 pm slot, I'm going to start wondering.

Anonymous said...

I'm hoping Anderson will at least show up during the hours AC360 is usually on.

Anonymous said...

Looks like Anderson is still in Denver.

A blogger reported seeing him and Charles Barkley eating at the CNN Grill about two hours ago. (The blogger didn't say if they were eating together, just that they were both there.)

Anonymous said...

Do Anderson and Wolf get along well together?

Is Wolf heading up the Republican convention next week, I assume?

So then I wonder what will happen next week, if Campbell will still cover that.

Anderson must be a little steamed....

Carly said...

NEWS FLASH......... ANDY JUST SHOWED UP.....MAN TALK ABOUT GOOD TIMING....HE HAD US ALL WORRIED THERE FOR A MOMENT...ONE WORD...AMEN

He's on! Yay! I'm a little embarrassed that I was freaking out so much, LOL! But I have to tell you, if I am expecting to see the man, and I'm not warned that he won't be there, I flip out. I actually like this better if he'll be there at the 9pm hour.

ACAnderFan said...
