Extreme Challenges: The Next Four Years

With Anderson still out in the field (hopefully making his way home), Anderson’s special with David Gergen and Fareed Zakaria “Extreme Challenges: The Next Four Years” aired. The special originally aired back in March.

Iraq – what are the options? This special was filmed months ago and things have changed even more so in Iraq. Both McCain and Obama have visited Iraq during their campaigns.

The economy – since this special’s filming the economy has taken on the top spot as issue #1. Foreclosures, job lose, gas and food prices. You name it and it is bad.

Afghanistan/Pakistan - in the last few months, Afghanistan has become more deadly than Iraq. It seems the “forgotten war” is getting everyone’s attention again.

Iran/North Korea– Not our allies but we are now talking with them. It sounds like the idea of communication expressed by one of the candidates is being tried with these countries. Hopefully this will lead to more communication and eventually negations.

Health care – Universal would seem like a logical plan to have but how do you go about getting it so everyone has it.

The environment – Whether you believe in global warming or not you have to agree the weather this year has been particularly intense.

The special was very interesting and I love when Anderson and guests sit around the “map table” and discuss particular subjects. I have said this since the primaries and I will say it again. I would love to see a special that tackles some other issues the future President will be facing but maybe those can be brought up in the future debates. What are your thoughts on tonight’s special? Do you agree or disagree with what was said? What would you like to have been discussed?

Erica Hill did the News and Business Bulletins throughout the special.

That is it for me tonight but before I go we at ATA send our warmest birthday wishes to Em whose birthday was Friday August 1st. Ms. Em, we hope you had a terrific day and hope you enjoy a slice of Andercake from us ~ Sapphire

I didn't see much of this special as I was busy, but I think it's the one that put me to sleep last time it was on. I don't know why, but I just can't get into this special.

I really enjoyed the special, It was a very intelligent conversation between very intelligent men. I can't get enough of Gergen, Fareed and without passing Mr. Cooper himself.

I can watch any conversation, topic,or special from them any time.

I wish there was more of this kind of special.

Erica co-anchored The Early Show this morning on CBS. Did anyone see it?

I've been watching Erica on The Early Show (CBS)for a bit. She seemed to be enjoying herself. Personally, I think this sort of programming is better suited for her and her personality. I say the same thing about Katie Couric. I like both of them, but I do not like Katie sitting there reading the evening news like a robot.

I enjoyed this special, even though I had seen it before,it held my interest with the topics.
I always enjoy what David Gergen has to say,and Fareed's new program is very good as well.

I certainly cannot see how anyone could be bored,or fall asleep watching it.

I agree with everything that anonymous 2:48 AM said.

I saw Erica on the Eary Show this morning. I think she did a wonderful job. And I agree anonymous 5:55am, she is very well suited to morning news shows.

@anonymoyus 7:41am. I don't really like Daid Gergan (even though he knows his stuff) or Fareed Zakaria so that is probably why this special bores me and puts me to sleep. Now the special about the Hidden Wars, that was a good one and I really enjoyed it. I wish they'd show it again.

I watched the last half hour of Erica on the Early Show and I thought she did a fantastic job as usual. Glad to see she is finlly doing more then 2 minute spots

Sapphire, Maybe they are trying Erica in different spots. Hopefully, she'll be plugged into one of them instead of just reading the bulletins on 360 that require no skill.
I think CNN should have run a more updated special. Iraq has been in the news lately and is no longer the "forgotten war." I don't like reports that are used as fillers and that's exactly what this was. We are already engaged in shifting troops to other areas of the Middle East.

anon 3:56: I was thinking the same thing about Erica, trying her out in different spots. I was not able to watch the entire show, but she with her personality sure seemed more suited to that type of program over an evening program like 360 and she is more involved. and she may like the hours more now that her son will be starting a pre-school of sorts at some point and then off to school and she may not want to travel as a correspondent with him.

If 360 is not going to utilize her, than I would like to see someone else who will.

I suppose if you wanted to make a positive comment on the 360 website about her today, it would not hurt.

How can Erica be co-hosting on CBS This Morning while she is also on CNN? Do networks often do that? I think she would be great on a show like that. Her personality would really shine through and it would be great watching her interact with lots of people.

@Nebraska Fan- CBS & CNN have a history of colaboration. Anderson, Sanjay, & Christiane (there may be more... but they aren't coming to mind... Lou??) all have done work for CBS while still maintaining their roles at CNN. There has even been talk (rumor?) in the past of merging the two news networks.

Also, Jon Klein used to work for CBS.
