12 Days and Counting.....

Before I begin I must explain a few things (and of course Anderson Cooper listens with intense interest, as you can see by the picture). First I am feeling very old tonight. I don't usually say I'm old, don't usually think of myself as old, but old I must be. Why? Because I am trying to watch Anderson Cooper on the MTV special and it's not going so well. I hate the music, well not all of the music. I did enjoy Juanes...but he sang in Spanish.....a language I don't speak. At least his song seemed to have words and there were no choruses of hey, hey, ho, ho.

The second thing, if you haven't picked up on it yet, I'm cranky tonight. I don't usually blog on Friday nights, it's date night for DH and moi. But since Ms. Sapphire so graciously offered to cover for me on Wednesday I am returning the favor. DH and I decided not to forgo our night on the town, just scale it back a bit with a quick, early dinner. We ended up eating with all the old folks who feel the need to eat before the sun goes down and hurry home, so as not to miss Wheel of Fortune. Since we were throwing caution to the wind and eating early we also decided to make our first visit to one of those pizza buffet restaurants. I don't think I have ever consumed so many carbohydrates in one meal in my entire life. I feel like my body is going to explode from the carbs and my mind will too because of the MTV music. Now that I've painted that lovely picture of myself for you let's move on to discuss Friday's AC360 (in bullet points).

• Terrible breaking news about the death of members of Jennifer Hudson's family. The singer and actress lost her mother and brother in the senseless attack. There was mention that one of her family members was involved in an abusive relationship with the killer.
• Next report was the young Pittsburgh woman who lied about being attacked by an Obama supporter. Seriously? A panel to discuss the mentally ill person who perpetrated this lie? Really stupid waste of time, imo. The Gerg opened the discussion by saying she had no impact on the race and it should be forgiven and forgotten. So then why discuss???? • Tom Foreman and Joe Johns led discussions with voters about race and its impact on the elections. Portions of the interviews were shown and Roland, Soledad, Tom and Joe discussed the results. This was a really relevant and interesting report. I assume this will be an upcoming special (forgive me if they mentioned that, I might have missed it). Topics discussed included 'code words', Reverend Wright and 'the Bradley effect'. For those of you who are not familiar with the history of this, here's the short version. Tom Bradley ran for Governor of California in 1982. He was African American. The polls showed him slightly ahead but he lost the election. It was theorized that people tell pollsters they will be voting for the Black candidate because they want to appear not to be racist. But in the privacy of a voting booth they will vote for the White candidate. The panel consensus is we have moved past this prejudice, at least as far as polling is concerned.

• Randi Kaye did the 360 Bulletins (an ATA commenter told us that Erica was off because of her sister's wedding) and yet another report on the nut job from Pittsburgh who faked the attack.

•The Shot was a photo shopped video of the Senators Obama and McCain dancing. Would you agree with me that this might have caught AC's eye because he thinks it would solve his problems about not dancing for Kelly, Erica and the AC360 crew? I smell a plan in the works.

Now onto the MTV special 'A Night for Vets: An MTV Concert for the BRAVE '. Cyn is my hero for uploading Anderson's portion of the program.
Here's AC introducing and wrapping up his clip

Here's AC introducing and wrapping Michael Ware's clip

And ditto for Sanjay Gupta's clip

Thanks to an anonymous tipster here are a few pictures of Anderson in Times Square on Thursday night before the MTV taping. (click to enlarge)

And thanks to some readers who forwarded along a few pictures they took of Anderson in the past year. The first is from Laura and was taken on NYE 2008 in Times Square.
These last 2 pictures were taken by Toby at the Democratic National Convention in August.

I have one more little goodie from our friend Kristien. It seems that many of our readers have developed a fondness for Jack Gray. He's smart, funny and actually seems to enjoy blogging (unlike his boss). So here's his picture and a the story behind the arm in a sling.

Jack GrayAC360° Producer
It wasn’t the way I envisioned my trip to San Francisco concluding…
You see, I was scheduled to spend the evening with the Young Republicans of San Francisco (no, that’s not a typo) to discuss how a group of political conservatives exist in arguably the most liberal city in the country. It was to be the ying to the yang of my visit with the Young Democrats of Utah. But, a few hours before we were to get together, I fell. In broad daylight. Getting into a cab. Sober. It’s lame, I know.
The irony is that I had just moments earlier – according to the San Francisco Police Department – narrowly escaped getting my “ass kicked” by an encampment of drug addicts in Golden Gate Park. Apparently the park is a de facto sovereign nation and it was sheer luck that two bike patrolmen came along just as the unhappy crowd began to converge on me and my $3,000 CNN video camera. By the way, special thanks to the guy on the corner of Haight and Ashbury Streets who suggested the park would be a great place to get footage. Hilarious, pal. Anyway, after getting out of the park alive I realized I had pushed my luck enough for the day and it was time to go back to the hotel.
So I hailed a cab, told the driver where I was going and asked that he make a quick stop at City Hall as I needed to get a few quick exterior shots. Easy as pie, right? Not quite, as it turns out. I got the exterior shots alright but as I was getting back into the cab things fell apart – literally. It was one of those mini-van cabs. I had my left hand on the top of the door frame and my right hand (which was also holding the camera) on the right side of the door frame. Any idiot could handle it, right? Well, not me.
I remember the cab driver saying something to me, the door sliding and the next thing I knew I was on the ground, writhing in tremendous pain and freaking out that the camera was broken. Fast forward a few minutes – I’m back at the hotel, in denial that I have seriously injured my arm and busted the camera. One call to the hotel doctor and I’m over at the Saint Francis Hospital Emergency Room. X-rays….something about a fracture and the joint space of my elbow. I need surgery, they tell me. Meantime I’m getting frantic emails from the Young Republicans – “are you going to be able to make it tonight?”
I feel badly that they’re all standing around waiting for me but there’s nothing I can do. One gigantic arm splint and two Vicodins later and I’m back at the hotel packing my bags so I can catch the red eye home to New York. The story of the San Francisco Republicans will have to wait.
P.S. – The silver lining — it turned out I didn’t need surgery!

Don't forget to tune into Anderson's special ' Anderson Cooper 360: Back from the Battle' that airs on Saturday night and repeated again on Sunday night. Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Michael Ware will both have segments on the program too.
Have a great weekend everyone. When I blog next the election countdown will be in single digits.......FINALLY! ~Phebe

Phebe, good for you for attempting the MTV special. There was no way I was going to sit though that thing. I love Anderson and all, but not enough that I'm willing to sit through crappy music...LOL!

The woman who claimed to be attacted by an Obama supporter clearly has something wrong with her, and she needs help. She's a nut job and she probably carved the "B" in her face and that's why it is backwards. The fool probably looked in a mirror to do it.

Cyn, thank you for clipping the good parts of the MTV thing. However Sanjay's video isn't working for me :(

Poor Jack Grey :( I do love his blog posts though and at least he regulary blogs unlike Mr.Cooper who I think abandodned the blog and only blogs when absoulutely necessary.

I loved Anderson's shirt last nite. It looked so good on him. I love when he wears stripes.

I haven't watched MTV in years, probably since the 90's - do they still have music on the channel?

What bothered me about that person who pretended to be attacked was how quickly the right wingers tried to make Obama somehow responsible for it, it was disgusting and wrong as Jamal Simmons rightfully pointed out. That woman may have some mental problems, but I think she knew EXACTLY what she was doing and the response it would trigger. I'm glad she was caught.

I really *hope* that the people who are saying they will vote for Obama actually do mean it - I think after suffering the disastrous effects of the Bush administration and their policies, I don't can't imagine why there would be any reason to lie about your choice now. I really liked the discussion on race and the race and it's always good to see Soledad, but I also like having Joe Johns on the panel - he's not usually in on the panel discussions. Anderson WON'T let up on Rev. Wright, god only knows why, but he was getting chewed out on the live blog about it - AC please stop it! McCain said he's not going to go there (not sure I believe it though).

Loved the Shot - AC might try to do the same kind of computer generated *dancing*, but I think people are still going to go after him to really dance anyway.

Nice pic of Jack Gray, his blog posts always crack me up, he does look a little like Tyne Daly like he said.

So sorry to hear about Jennifer Hudson's family tragedy, no one should have to lose their relatives in such an awful way.

Phebe,are you NOT a Wheel watcher?LOL

The line up for that concert did NOT seem to be my cup of tea,to be honest with you.

I think Anderson now has the PERFECT answer to the whole dance thing.....just stick his head on someone else's video like last night's clips.....there,Kelly,he is dancin' now!

Thanks for the Times Square clips, now let's hope he is once again hosting NYE there.

Nice to see what Jack finally looks like, his posts are hilarious!

Phebe:

did you give any thought to the idea of putting up an election clock, like you did for PIP?

Any chance THAT might make it go faster,or be more bearable for you all, perhaps?

Or would seeing the time tick away make it seem like forever, instead?

Just a thought.

anne said...

Did Anderson have just that ONE segment from the whole concert,or was he on more than that?

Thank you for the picture of Jack Gray. From the way he said something about himself, I was expecting someone who looked like Abe Vigota.

Phebe - you had me laughing while I read your post - living here in Florida I know exactly what you mean about the early birds who go to dinner in order to get home to watch Wheel - I also felt the same way about watching the MTV special - I felt ancient

It is sad about the yound woman who clearly has mental problems and her claims of being attacked by a black man - what is frightening about this is how quickly the jerks in the far right media jumped on this as factual before the police even investigated - I doubt that any of them will issue apologies to their readers and listeners that they were wrong for showing how bigoted and racist they are by jumping to conclusions before knowing the facts

Have a great weekend everyone

@anne, a clock would just drag it out. I am more than happy just knowing how many days are left until November 4th.

OMG, poor Jack Grey, I hope he doesn't hold it against us! Although, I have to wonder where all the SF Republican's are hiding out at! I sure haven't seen any & I was born/raised here!LOL

He's got me beat in the stupid accident category as well, I got hit by a bike messenger as I got off a SF Muni bus this summer which landed me in the hospital with a busted knee-cap! His looks more serious, I hope he gets better soon.

Thanks Cyn for the video & Phebe for posting. I couldn't watch it either, it made me feel way to old when I didn't recognize many of the artists except the folks from CNN!

Have a great weekend :-)

Oh my, poor Jack Grey! I hope he doesn't hold it against us here in SF! I can't fathom where the SF Republican's are hiding though, I haven't met any & I was born and raised here in The City!LOL

I have to admit he has me beat in the dumb accident category. I got hit by a bike messenger as I was stepping off a SF Muni bus this summer, flew 10 feet up in the air and busted my knee-cap. Just a footnote to my accident prone self! I hope Jack gets better soon.

Thanks Cyn for posting the MTV clips, like Phebe I couldn't watch it. I felt really old when I didn't know who anyone was except the CNN people!!

Have a good weekend all!

I am the one from yesterday that requested that you post the clip from Anderson and the concert. I just want to say THANK YOU and I am sorry Phebe you had to sit through it. That is why I didn't think I could, even for Anderson. Just not my type of music.

I think the show last night was one of the better ones from the last few weeks. They had good discussions going on with Tom, Joe, Solidad and even Roland (Sorry he sometimes gets on my nerves)

Thanks again for the clip and I look forward to watching the special tonight.

Oh also thanks for all the great pictures.

I really liked the show, especially the discussion with Tom, Soledad, Joe and Roland. It was a very interesting and educational segment.

That woman who claimed she had been attacked...she desperately needs help!

Poor Jennifer Hudson! How awfull it must be for her.

Jack's a cutie, isn't he? Cute, clever AND funny, just the way I like 'em, lol.

Thanks Phebe.

Sorry, everybody, but I've got to diss the show.
First, Anderson talked about the liar - mentally unbalanced, imaginary Obama attacker woman - and then they had a lengthy panel discussion about it.
Then, much later in the show they broadcast Randi Kaye's factual report of it.
The producer/director/Anderson should have decided to have Randi's factual report first and then the discussion.
360 was too disjointed separating these two.

The woman should get the maximum sentence allowed; mentally unbalanced or not, she was essentially trying to slander Obama.

What ever happened to the Florida police officer who campaigned - gave a speech for Palin - while in uniform? Was he fired? Reprimanded?

Thanks for the concert, Times Square and DNC photos.

I've been really bothered by some of 360's "breaking news." It seems to me like every time there's negative news about Palin or McCain, Anderson talks about it endlessly...and there's always a panel discussion. I'm not a fan of the nitpicking; however, I'd tolerate it if equal attention was given to both sides. Biden has made plenty of gaffes and, IMHO, 360 has completely ignored them. Honestly, how many of you here would have a good chuckle if it was Palin who said "jobs" was a 3 letter word?

Anyway, I hope Ashley Todd gets some help. No sane person would do that to herself. It's sad that the media focuses on people like her....believe me, there are plenty of McCain supporters who are intelligent, reasonable, and sane.

BTW, @Kristien, I agree. Jack is cute, clever and funny. With Gergen and Jack around, it looks like Anderson has some competition:)

One last thing, I was wondering how many of you here know about the Drew Griffin/Palin interview controversy? No one has talked about it and CNN has completely ignored it. I found it strange when 360 didn't show more of it on the second night but now I know why.

Well, well, well. Jack is just a adorable as he is funny. Killer combo.

I was glad Anderson was on at the beginning of the concert. I like some of those artists, but not all of them and I tuned out after Anderson's piece, so thanks for the clips Cyn amd Phebe. Also I know MTV will rerun that over and over, so I can catch it on the rebound.

Anxiously await "Back From The Battle" tonight, even though I know it is gonna make me cry. My cousin is on her way back to Iraq as a write. =(

Love the pics of Anderson in Times Sqaure. So cute! But how ironic is it that on the 2nd pic it says "I Love Ugly" in the window. Far from it! LOL.

Phebe said...

@anonymous 3:25, I assume you are referring to Drew's misquote of the National Review article? Drew was an odd choice to do the interview in the first place and his butchering the quote only made that choice more curious.
As to why AC360 didn't air more of the interview, maybe they were as unimpressed by the content as we were. Not everything is a cover up or a conspiracy.....not even when it involves politics.

Phebe; I always look forward to your blogging because I can usually relate to your perspective on things, like listening to MTV music and feeling well,... old. I don't think not liking mtv music, justifies your feeling old, maybe older, but not old.
Question: Is there anything else AC can host? Jon Stewart seems to have a lock on the academy awards but other than that....I for one will not be watching. Nothing to do with Anderson, I just don't feel this war was ever justified and if we want to find money and we sure need it now, why not cut the spending on these needless injuries and bring all these young men home. Osama's aim has been accomplished. We need not fear his wrath any longer. He wanted to destroy the US economy and WE did it for him. Job done. Bring our troops home. Now! I bet that alone would save trillions.

Loved Alex Castellanos' comment that the next time this "nut job" wanted to carve a letter on her face it should be an O and not a B, so she wouldn't do it backwards.

@ 3:25 PM: Sorry, McCain supporters are not "intelligent, reasonable or sane." If they were, they'd would have figured out that McCain, has poor judgement, is eratic, and old. And no, he was never tested as a leader, though he keeps saying he was....during the Cuban missle crisis, 40 years ago! McCain supporters would also have learned that the majority of people are not against hockey moms for VP, we elitists, just don't like hockey mom's who are ignorant of basic facts....like the moron we elected twice.

Anonymous said...

@Anon 5:08, your comment just shows the level of intolerance that some Obama supporters show toward people who disagree with them. It's impossible to have an intelligent discussion with people like you because you resort to calling people unreasonable and dumb if they disagree with you. You accuse McCain of lacking experience and displaying poor judgment. How about Obama? I guess his European tour and Powell endorsement gives him automatic foreign experience. His choices in friends also display great judgment, right? Listen, I understand we support different candidates for different reasons. I respect your decision and I hope you'll show the same kind of respect toward me. It's ridiculous to say someone who doesn't support Obama is dumb. BTW, I don't mean to generalize...I know not all Obama supporters are like this.

Katie said...

@Phebe, why do you think Drew was an odd choice? I feel bad for the guy. I don't think he intentionally misquoted the National Review. However, I also found it strange that 360 only showed one small part of the interview. Anderson has been complaining for weeks that Palin wouldn't do an interview with CNN. Then, she finally does one and he doesn't show it because perhaps it wasn't interesting enough? He showed the Couric interview for 3-4 days. I hope he didn't decide Drew's interview wasn't interesting because Palin didn't make any noticable mistakes. Anyway, I guess we'll never know so I shouldn't speculate. BTW, thanks for the great post...even though you weren't into the MTV special. I actually forgot to watch it. Are they reshowing it?

@Anon 5:08, I also support McCain and I can assure you I'm "intelligent, reasonable, and sane." While it's true that we can't agree on everything, I hope we can agree to disagree without the personal attacks.

Anonymous said...

OK, I don't want to sound insensitive but I have to ask. Why was Jennifer Hudson's mom still living in their old neighborhood? I apologize if this question offends anyone. From what I've read, it seems like they lived in a bad part of Chicago. Then again, if this was a domestic matter, it really doesn't matter where they lived.

Phebe said...

The last few comments we've received have been disrespectful and nasty and I'm not going to post them. But I would like to give you something to think about. Life is too short to spend bickering. Educate yourself and vote. Quit wasting energy pointing fingers at the other side and name calling. It won't win the election and it won't change anyone's mind.

Anonymous said...

@Phebe, I second that. Let's just agree to disagree. BTW, do you know if they're reshowing the MTV special? I missed that and the "Back From Battle" special. I'm hoping to catch the latter tonight.
