Well, all day long I figured most of tonight's program would focus on the GM bankruptcy and the loss of Air France flight 447. The lost jet did get some focus, but GM only warranted the briefest of mentions in the Bulletin.

As for flight 447, Anderson says that our spy satellites are now searching for any signs of the craft, although giving how long it has been since it was last heard from, there is no realistic hope of a rescue mission, and given the area it seems to have gone down, only slim hope of a recovery. Brian Todd gives us the details. (By the way, Miles O'Brien has been posting some great information on his blog.)

But most of the focus of the first half-hour of the program was on the murder yesterday of a doctor who provided women in Wichita, Kansas with a legal medical procedure. No matter what your personal beliefs, this was cold-blooded murder committed in a church. How anyone can condone it and still consider themselves a Christian is beyond me. (Although while we're on the topic of labels, I have yet to meet ANYONE who is "pro-abortion." Just because the "anti-choice" people say it doesn't make it true.) Gary Tuchman is in Wichita covering the story.
Anderson also spoke with Dr. Warren Hern of Boulder, Colorado. The fact that doctors have to live and practice in a police state formed by one group of religious zealots is utterly appalling. This is not how we change laws in America.
Randi Kaye looks into the history of the killer. Clearly he's been wanting to raise some hell for a long time. How tragic that he wasn't stopped in time.
Anderson spoke by phone with a woman who had a late abortion due to a tragic physical defect that would have caused her fetus to be stillborn. Why does anyone have the right to make such an intensely personal and painful decision into a public debate?
Brief pause for a bonus -- Anderson joined Campbell Brown earlier tonight to discuss the case of our latest "domestic terrorist."
Anyway, an update on the Air France story, and Anderson talks with John Hansman, an aviation expert. Okay, this whole idea of pilots talking to computers which then actually run the planes ... have people not watched enough sci-fi movies? Having the computers run things is never a good idea.
360 Bulletin from Erica Hill: GM bankruptcy; shooting at a military recruiting office in Little Rock; and the deer OVER the headlights:
Finally we get to the only part of tonight's program I actually enjoyed... Andrew Sullivan:
The discussion of the armed robbery of the pharmacy had me really feeling like I'd stepped through the looking glass. Since when is it excusable to shoot an unarmed guy (kid, in fact!) who is on the floor, having been shot in the head? Was he a threat at that point? I think not. This is when you CALL THE COPS. I've always thought that Lisa Bloom is an idiot, and that quintupled tonight.
UPDATE: Okay, a giant mea culpa ... in all the back-and-forth of pulling/converting clips last night, I completely missed the second 360 Bulletin! So: violent crime dropped except for small cities; Nancy Reagan gives an interview to Vanity Fair; and Susan Boyle hospitalized for exhaustion. I clipped the last bit:
All right, The Shot... nothing great but:

No Anderson bonuses tonight, but I thought you guys would get a kick out of this -- a rare blooper that made it to air. Tony Harris throws to Reza Sayah in Islamabad, and a bad camera tripod reveals ... well, I'm not sure which is funnier, Reza's shorts and the fuzzy mic or the look on Tony's face:

I agree with you about the abortion doctor issue. Cold blooded murder is cold blooded murder. I just graduated from college, and maybe I am naive for thinking this--but will there be a time when people can stop spewing hate around and come to a table and discuss issues which they strongly disagree about in a civil manner? I hope so.
Regardless if whether you're pro-choice or pro-life--no one deserves to get death threats at their job or have to walk with armed security because of their profession. This is utterly insane! Didn't we leave a different country so we wouldn't be persecuted for our beliefs--regardless of what those beliefs are.
--One love--AC FAN IN CA :)
360 last nite was OK. Frankly I was just glad Anderson was back.
I was very surprised that GM only got a tiny mention. But it didn't go with the theme of the program, abortion.
The killer killed the doctor because he didn't like what the doctor was doing, I guess. The killer killed someone for killing, that's a little hypocritical.
I really hope 360 has Andrew Sullivan back again soon. I liked hearing what he had to say. And I actually learned something when he was talking to Anderson. I had no idea people with HIV/AIDS aren't allowed in the US.
Yes 360 wasn't the greatest but Anderson was back!!! That's counts for something.
NOT heroes:
1. Dr. Tiller's murderer - no justification, religious or otherwise for what he did - I hope he's prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
2. The Oklahoma pharmacist - I don't condone what the robbers did, but the pharmacist clearly committed murder and instead of having two people on who basically had the same viewpoint to discuss it was irresponsible of 360 - if the guy was wounded, the pharmacist should've called the police and let them handle the rest - I don't ususally have a problem with Lisa Bloom, but she was wrong, imo.
3. Dick Cheney - President Obama needs to have his feet held to the fire over his lack of action or what appears to be lack of action on gay issues - I'm disappointed that he hasn't repealed DADT or DOMA, but I believe that he and his administration will ultimately do the right thing. Dick Cheney and the Bush Administration did next to nothing for gay rights for 8 years in spite of Cheney having a gay daughter. For AC to label Cheney "progressive" because he made a half-hearted statement about gay marriage and marveling over the fact Bush threw out a bone to gays at the END of his term is laughable. Why didn't either of them do something of significance for gay rights when it really counted?
While I hope Susan Boyle recovers from her breakdown, I have to admit that I'm sick of hearing about her - the media has gone WAY overboard with her and they need to stop attaching more importance to her story than it actually deserves.
Yes, I was glad to see Anderson back, but it sure didn't take long for him to piss me off! BUT I still love the guy.
Erica hasn't been doing the webcam anymore- at least the link hasn't been there for the past week. Wonder if that will be back.
So according to the morning buzz Anderson is in LA tonight to work in the story about Lisa Ling's sister and the other journalist in North Korea.
Lisa had contacted Anderson (and others in the media) to try to help out.
That was a helluva long 9 days! But, boy, (both uses of that word!) it was worth the wait!
My favorite part of the show was, of course, Anderson's interview with Andrew Sullivan. Not only was the passion expressed by both men deserved by the subject matter, their interaction was fun to watch and, of course, today's blog title captures the exact moment that captured my attention too. As someone viewing and Tweeting at the time commented on Twitter, that little exchange "could be seen from space!" and was delightful.
The Dr. Tiller story is, in a way, related to the deep disappointment in both the previous and current administrations voiced during the Andy & Andy segment: on the issues which apparently spark such divisive passion on both sides, our elected officials prefer to look the other way. In my opinion the extreme anti-abortion crowd should be rounded up and placed in the about to be vacant Gitmo, as the terrorists they are!
The rest of the show was a blur because I was just sitting there in my family room, mouth agape, brain only partially engaged, enjoying the scenery I realized I missed a whole lot this past week! I'll be OK.
The shootng of the abortion doctor is a criminal act plain and simple - if you are anti-abortion fine, go out and peacefully protest but you cannot commit murder and then say its okay to do this - I know someone who had to have a late term abortion and I can tell you, this woman did not make this decision lightly, she did so after consultation with many doctors who felt this was the only option to insure her safety -
The law of the land allows for abortions - even though some think this is murder, it is a choice that woman are legally allowed to make - the acts that these lunactics commit against doctors is murder
Liked seeing Andrew Sullivan on
The pharmacist should be held accountable -if he had just wounded the robber, he could say he was defending himself but he killed a man who clearly no longer represented a threat to him
As of yesterday, Anderson is scheduled to be on Regis & Kelly Thursday and Friday
I was so glad to have AC back last night, but the guy ticked me off for the first time EVER. I am going to have to stop watching the webcam. During the commercial breaks he was like a madman with that blackberry. He wasn't just reading, he was texting like crazy. And he didn't make ANY comments on the blog. I think Erica only made 2. The problem is John King kind of spoiled me last week because he blogged so much. I'm sure it's a novelty to him and he'd probably tire of it, too. I don't know why this was such a big deal to me, usually I don't care at all, but it just struck me wrong last night.
While I was watching the abortion stories, all I could think of was that you never see any pro-choice people saying derogatory things, destroying property or physically hurting anyone, but you hear about pro-life people doing it all the time. Doesn't really help their cause.
Anderson is going with Erica and Candy to the Gracie Awards tomorrow night.
Just read this and wanted to share from TVNewser:
It was the second best May for Total Viewers by CNN in a decade, behind last year. CNN's American Morning finished 2nd in Total Viewers and the demo, while Larry King Live was 2nd in Total Viewers at 9pmET. Anderson Cooper 360 was #2 in Total Viewers and demo at 10pmET.
Is it okay to print things from articles here? Sorry if not. Just let me know. I was just glad to read it.
It bewilders me to see these pro lifers. Most of them would agree with the death penalty. Most of them would agree with the Iraq and Afghan wars. But let a woman make a choice about their bodies and they call it murder.
DEAD FETUS = MURDER
DEAD AFGHAN AND IRAQI CHILDREN = COLLATERAL DAMAGE
I don't understand the logic.
@olsond: I reread TVNewser: It said: Total "DAY" meaning CNN prime is doing poorly. CNN came in LAST THIS YEAR IN TOTALS in May. Your interpretation is unfortunately wrong, just to clarify. FOX out-foxed all of them and MSNBC was second in prime. Please read comment section.
The only good thing about the Sullivan interview was the use of the word "verklempt." Obviously AC has Jewish friends like Barry Diller who use Yiddish a great deal and that word is a favorite of his. As a commenter of Jewish faith, it is a word that originated from the German, meaning mixed up or crazy....but I'm certain you all got the meaning from its context.
@aires moon: AC "pissed" me off too, about his lack of loyalty to the Obama Administration. Yes, "Dick" had to admit his daughter was "gay," as he hung his head in shame....and notice he never used the word marriage, not once. He really made a BIG effort when he was VP and should be praised to the hilt...and to use the word "progressive." I can think of other adjectives that come to mind when speaking of Cheney and none of them are even close to "progressive." Try mean spirited.
Kitzel
Accordiing to TVNewser: AC came in last, unfortunately, though the CNN line up did better than they had been doing. His totals were about 800,000 plus. AC was still beaten by reruns of over KO and Maddow and then there is GRETA. Being beaten by reruns is not a good thing, but he might be on the rebound.
Hey all, I guess I was a bit verklempt myself last night ... I totally missed the second 360 Bulletin! So I added the info to the post and also clipped the bit about Susan Boyle, just for you fans of the ":Awwwww."
Nebraska Fan, thanks for the explanation of the Yiddish -- it was used to commonly in my household (my father's family was Jewish) I tend to forget that many people don't learn that stuff growing up!
As for all the BlackBerry usage last night ... I wasn't watching the webcam so I couldn't say, but isn't it possible that it was work-related? With CNN staffers heading for Rio and all sorts of actual breaking news happening, maybe he was working his sources. I remember how TBPTOT used to do that at the conventions, even while on the air. (Or maybe he was booking his flight to LA!)
I wonder if both Anderson and Erica will be off tomorrow night since they will be at the Gracies.
SOO glad Anderson is back.
I liked Gary Tuchman's story. I thought he did a good job. Also, have to agree with everyone on this...no matter how you feel about abortion, nothing justifies murder. I don't see how people could say Dr. Tiller got what he deserved.
Sigh......I realized after I read things again and other articles that I jumped the gun on the ratings. Sorry....
@Cyn: Nebraska Fan didn't explain the Yiddish translation, I did, Kitzel.
Also wasn't AC in LA to discuss Lisa Ling's sister and her kidnapping or did I misunderstand?
I didn't really watch the show...first time in quite a while.
Was busy watching NJ Housewives on Bravo. Yes, I live in NJ and they are all the rage...a throw back from our Soprano days.
Can't say I've been watching as of late either.
Are they done with the "drama" and back to real news yet?
Abortion doctors being murdered, Dick Cheney talking about his gay daughter, and Susan Boyle needing a vacation doesn't sound like real news.
Guess I answered my own question.
Sorry, Kitzel, I guess I have moved on from being verklempt to being totally meshugena!
And this was tweeted a few hours ago:
From Anderson: taking red-eye back to NY. Spent day with Lisa Ling. Thurs her sister goes on trial in north korea. Full report on 360 Wed.
