War of Words

Breaking News... a look at what was seized by police when they searched the office of Michael Jackson's doctor. Randi Kaye gives us the latest.

War of Words -- Joe Johns reports on the Harvard professor arrested for trying to break into his own home and the controversy that grew even larger when the president weighed in on it last night. Roland Martin and Boyce Watkins, founder of yourblackworld.com, debate the issue. Tom Foreman uses the Magic Wall to show how many states are looking into racial profiling. Well, all I can say (as a white woman) is that I have lived in three different states in the past two decades, and everywhere I go, the phrase "driving while black" is well known.

Erica Hill gives us 360 Bulletin #1: the president's open house on the health care issue; big arrest in NJ, mayors, assemblymen, rabbis swept up in a trafficking bust; Walter Cronkite's funeral.

Randi is back with details of the search warrants of Conrad Murray's office and storage unit.

After the break, Randi discusses an interview with Dick Gregory, who reveals that at the time of the second molestation trial, Michael Jackson was in need of a lot of help -- he was ill, paranoid, and desperate. (Oh, and Randi ... from 5:30 in the evening to 5:30 the morning of the next day does not constitute 24 hours. Just sayin'.) Anderson then interviews the woman who wrote the current Rolling Stone cover story.

Erica is back to cover the story of the ESPN reporter who was secretly videotaped in her hotel room and then the video uploaded to the internet. Loved his reaction to the idea of a Google Alert:

(Anderson, take it from those of us who have one on your name; it's a lot of email!)

Next up is a clip from Black in America 2, after which Anderson is joined by Soledad O'Brien and Geoffrey Canada to discuss ways to target the obesity epidemic among young blacks.

Erica has the second 360 Bulletin: QB Ben Roethlisberger denies rape charge; Dow goes above 9,000; White Sox pitcher throws a perfect game.

The Shot is a disco-inspired wedding (guess it was a slow day on the internet...):

And here is the promo for tomorrow's special pot flashback:

That's it for me tonight. I will be blogging Monday night's program; see you then!

360 was OK last nite. Really, this hasn't been the greatest week for the program. I'm hoping next week is alot better.

The piece about Erin Andrews was disturbing. Poor woman I feel bad for her. Anderson's reaction to getting google alerts about himself was priceless. I guess he won't be doing that...LOL!!!

Not sure why but I am kind of looking forward to the pot special tonite. Mainly I just want to see Anderson's piece on the Farmacy. That piece and Homicide in Hollenbeck are two things he's done that I could watch over and over again...LOL!

I liked seeing Geoffrey Canada on the program and hearing AC say he's one of his personal heroes - he's one of mine too along with Steve Perry, the principal who was on 360 the other night - what they've achieved can't be understated.

Although racial profiling isn't always necessarily the reason why an African American or other minority might get targeted by the police, it's a very real problem and IMO, Henry Louis Gates was a victim of it.

Anderson definitely should avoid the google alerts - they might be fun for some of us, I get them, but there's a lot of weird stuff and a very high volume of email - but sometimes you can find an interesting link. He also looked a little concerned for a moment when Erica was talking about those tiny cameras that can be installed in hotel rooms, etc - he's already got Twitter all up in his business and probably would prefer to not have to worry about another method out there that would compromise his privacy.

I love that picture of Anderson that pops up when I go into AllThingAC on my mobile. He has a really sweet, kind of sad expression, and his face fills my blackberry screen. It wasn't clear if he'll be anchoring live tonight; does anyone know? I thought the pot special would rerun, but then he said "We'll see you tomorrow," and the blog is saying there'll be live news. The racial controversy has the same scary, stirred-up feeling as the OJ trial. I am mixed race, from black and white family, so I have a broader perspective. The race stories are frightening when they get too hot.

A slow news day all around, I think that's why they started with Michael Jackson news (again!) and had such a lengthy report about Gates and black profiling, which I believe is a serious problem and happens a lot but two weeks ago they would have given it two sentences in Erica's Bulletin. Same goes for all the news programs, at a busier time Gates would hardly be mentioned.

360 reported the Erin Andrews story better than Bill O'Reilly - who I never watch but read on the internet that Billo criticized whoever took the video and then showed way too much of the video on his own program.

The Shot was kind of fun and I'm not just saying that because it came from my home state.

Is Anderson on tonight or is it just the marijuana show? Although I want to see Anderson do a live show I can understand him taking off if it's a really slow news day and Friday to boot.

@ACAnderFan -- I agree that 360 was just okay last night and I'm hoping for a better week, next week. I did love Anderson's reaction to the option of getting Google Alerts about himself.

Just saw a tweet from Kay Jones that said tonight's show will be live at 10:00p.m. and the pot special will be shown at 11:00p.m. (Eastern)

Also, according to my TIVO it looks like Anderson is going to be guest hosting Live with Regis and Kelly next Wednesday and Thursday. Apparently it's "Dog Week" on Regis and Kelly -- should be interesting. I love when Anderson sits in for Regis. Usually good for a laugh or two and it's always nice to see his lighter side!

Cyn: I disagree with you about this particular incident concerning racial profiling. From the accounts I've read, the only one who did "racial profiling," was the person who first called the police, not James Crowley, the police sgt. Professor Gates was hostile and arrogant and verbally abusive to James Crowley. He had just returned from a trip from China. He'd be the first one to say, the police WEREN'T doing their
jobs if he had been robbed while away. And to add insult to injury President Obama took sides when he didn't have all the facts, calling the Cambridge police force, "stupid." The only thing more stupid was the President's remark. As a former Obama supporter, I side with ALL THE UNIONS, that supported him and if he's looking for a second term, it's time for him to say, "the police might have over-rected." Not every incident is racial profiling or has the slightest thing to do with race. People like the good "professor" need to get over themselves and their achievements.

The good professor had EVERY right to feel hostile about being arrested in his OWN home after showing proof of who he was, I don't blame him one bit. The charges were dropped against Professor Gates for good reason. Why on earth would anyone suggest that Professor Gates "get over" himself and his achievements?! He's proud of who he is and what he's accomplished as he should be.

@aires moon: When Professor Gates was confronted, according to the NYT, his first words were, "Don't you know who I am?" Maybe, the ENTIRE Cambridge police force didn't know who he was. It is a distinct possibility.
