More on Fort Hood

Hi everyone! Happy Friday. Tedi B here with a recap of the show.

*The show started off with the latest on the Fort Hood shootings. Anderson started off by speaking with Sargent Mark Todd who helped take down Major Hasan on Thursday. He and Officer Kimberly Munley are responsible for stopping the shooting. Ms. Munley is currently in the hospital healing from gunshot wounds.

*Ted Rowlands reports on some background information on the suspect of the shooting, Major Hasan and how he was recently giving away his furniture and other things to neighbors.

*In an interesting interview, Anderson talked with Dr. Val Finnell who was a classmates of the suspect. He took an Environmental Health class with him and said that Nidal Hasan talked about his extremist views A LOT and even did a report on it for the class, which really had nothing to do with the class at all.

*Gen, Barry McCaffry and Tom Kenniffe spoke with Anderson about the red flags that the army may or may not have missed.

*Drew Griffin brought us a disturbing story of homegrown hate. An American Muslim group called Revolution Muslims are trying to convert New York Muslims by standing outside their mosque and shouting at them about converting to their extremist views. They praised the Fort Hood attacks and "LOVE" Osama Bin Laden. Great bunch of guys!

*AC spoke with Peter Bergen about these Homegrown Haters. They discussed how it is an unfortunate growing trend in America.

*Next up was a short interview Anderson had with Oprah, after they got their connection straight! See Wonz's write up below for more info on the book they discussed.Part II of the interview will be shown on Monday.

*And finally they showed the shot of our favorite Filipino Dancing Prisoners! This time they danced to Queen. A couple of them looked a little "Queenie" too :) Thanks to Wonz for the clip!

Here is a write up on Anderson's Oprah appearance from Friday. Thanks to Wonz for the write up and the caps!

Anderson Cooper stopped by Harpo Studios in Chicago today to chat with Oprah Winfrey. They covered a variety of topics including the Oprah satellite interview for AC 360 that "Didn't quite go as planned" to the Fort Hood shootings, the Ohio serial killer and the fact that he was black (not the serial killer profile - white male of a certain age) and the conspiracy of silence that allow these things to go unnoticed by authorities.

The conversation then turned to the reason for Anderson's appearance to discuss the Oprah Book Club Selection Say You're One Of Them. There will be a Oprah.com and CNN.com joint book club discussion on Monday night at 8:00pm central. You can sign up to join in the discussion with Anderson, Oprah and the author, Uwem Akpan at Oprah.com We hope to cover the simulcast of the book club discussion at ATA for those who miss it. I'm in the middle of reading the book and I agree with Anderson, once you start reading and make a commitment to it, you get sucked into the stories. (The book is a work of fictional short stories, set in 5 countries all on the continent of Africa and is currently #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List.) Both Oprah and Anderson admitted to not being fond of short stories, but liked this book because the stories have an arc. The stories are all about the struggle to survive, but told through the eyes of children (which is what I think pulls you in.) Anderson commented that while the book is a work of fiction, the stories are ripped from real life. He revealed that one of his favorites is the first story which takes place on the streets of Nairobi - and he has been there and worked with the kind of kids described in the story. He also talked about the story that is based on the genocide in Rwanda and his experiences in Rwanda at the time of the genocide. Anderson also indicated that he thought the title was a message to the reader -- since we will never experience the situations described in the book, imagine if you were one of these children, promoting greater understanding of the struggles of others who are living in situations vastly different than ours.

Also, Anderson and Oprah shared a funny behind the scenes story of the the Oprah interview for AC360. Apparently it was done via satellite and as Anderson said "It didn't go quite as planned." There was a problem with the audio feed that lasted 9 minutes. Anderson couldn't hear Oprah and went through a series of "faces" during that time. Here are just a couple.

Oprah described this picture as "that Anderson look" and he said it was "somewhere between stunned and sleepy."

And this is Anderson's "let me out of this box" pose!

After many "can you hear me?s" - a series of Anderson's goofy faces, "aye yi yi's" - and laughs all around, Anderson admitted that at one point he asked Oprah a question, and he could see her talking, but the audio had gone out and he had no idea what she had said. He was wondering who was going to break it to her that he hadn't heard a word she said!

**And last up tonight is a picture that Anderson's PR. Rep, Shimrit, took and posted to her twitter account. It's of Anderson in Oprah's green room, waiting to go on Friday morning.

Thanks again to Wonz for all the caps tonight and her write up on Oprah's show. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

I liked Anderson's interview with Dr. Val Finnell. There's something really really wrong with Hasan. I mean why would you gave a presentation about the war on terror in a environmental health class. Something should have been done about Hasan. It seems like there were many signs pointing to something being off about him.

Drew Griffin's piece, about the radical muslims was interesting and eye opening. Its scary that people believe that way. They are so full of hatred. The things they say are terrible.

I really enjoyed Anderson on Oprah. We got his serious side and his lighter side. Why can't we get that Anderson on 360? I didn't know what to expect from the interview since I am not too fond of Oprah, but it was a good interview.

360 was pretty good last nite, the best one we got this week. Hopefully next week will be good as well. Wonz good job with the screen caps and write up about AC on Oprah :)

I'm headed to Tybee Island today, very excited! Hopefully my laptop will work with the wi-fi there.

Thanks for the recap since I barely watched Friday's 360. At the start of the show it looked like they were going to cover only the Fort Hood shootings and Oprah. So I switched between two other programs but checked back to 360 occasionally to see if Anderson was talking about something else.

The Fort Hood shootings is a big and very serious story but I found out everything I wanted to know from earlier news shows. And I'm wasn't much interested in Oprah segment, which as the screengrabs show, was taped earlier.

Perhaps one reason for the ratings problem is Anderson's time slot, by the time he comes on most people have already heard the big news of the day. Maybe some people want more details on the big news story but 360 should also cover stories that don't get much attention, like their reports on medical marijuana, gun shows and the hate crimes bill.

Could the Fort Hood shooting be another story in which 360 doesn't know when to move on? They don't have to stop covering it but how about limiting that story to half the show or less?

Hard to imagine how all the red flags about Hasan were overlooked. Anderson was clearly disturbed by the Revolution Muslims and his interview with Peter Bergen was fascinating to watch because of it.

I really enjoyed listening to AC's vivid description of Say You're One of Them--it sounds like a very good read--the theme of the struggle to survive seems to always hit a nerve with him.

That look AC calls "stunned and sleepy" always reminds me of dogs/puppies when they do the cute little head tilt thing. Oprah was a lot more amused about the missed connection than AC was--I don't think I've ever seen her laugh so much. That's a great pic of AC in the Oprah green room on his Blackberry--maybe it was taken as he was posting one of his rare Tweets today.

I missed 360 last night, thank you Tedi B.for catching me up.
There is just something about those Philippino prisoners that makes me smile. Great 'The Shot', thanks to Wonz for clipping it.
