Welcoming 2010!

Hi everyone! Cyn here (long time no see!!) for the third annual live-blog of Anderson's New Year's Eve special! I'm opening the post now so that our friends in other time zones can post their messages, and anyone who might be going out can post before they leave. (Sorry I'm already late for all the Aussies and every other time zone I missed!)

I'll approve posts as I can over the next couple of hours, and then be here live from 10pmET on through midnight PT. (And drinking...so the later it gets the more interesting things I may say!)

Unfortunately, I won't be able to clip during the show, but never fear, we will be getting some clips up tomorrow for you to enjoy as you nurse your hangover -- er, I mean, as you wake up to a new year and a clean slate of time waiting for all manner of exciting things to happen!

(If you have the ability to do screengrabs and want to submit them to me to post tonight, feel free to send them to me, and be sure to let me know how you want to be credited on the blog. I'll post as many as I can throughout the night.)

One caveat... I'm not a huge fan of Kathy Griffin, and although she turned out to be bearable last year, I may get catty at some point tonight. I shall try my best to refrain, but ... well, you know how it goes. (And it annoys me that she has co-billing for the special now. Just wanted to get that off my chest. You guys understand, right??)

Okay, on with the party! Let's make some noise! So long to 2009 and the Naught Decade, Hello 2010! Happy New Year, everyone!

One final one from Sharon... thanks again!

Anderson Cooper Does Dance!

I've dug deeper into the ATA Vault then I think we've ever gone before for tonight's clips. Both are from ABC's WNN and were orginally broadcast on December 24, 1999. The first shows Anderson Cooper doing a fake commerical for a product to help with painful television watching. How many of us CNN watchers could have used just such a product in the last year?

In second clip AC answers a viewers email about who is hotter....JuJu Chang or Barbara Walters. If you read my post from last Friday you'll remember AC anchored WNN with JuJu, who currently is the newsreader on GMA.
And finally I'll leave you with a reminder that Cyn will be doing the ATA live blog during Anderson's New Year's Eve program on Thursday night. I wanted to leave you with a little clip, that Julie put to music, of AC and Kathy Griffin DANCING during last year's broadcast. Eat your heart out Kelly Ripa! ~Phebe

Curses, Foiled Again

Breaking ATA News:
Cyn has agreed to moderate an ATA live blog during Anderson's New Year's Eve program on Thursday night. We did one
last year and the year before and found it was a great way for readers to join the celebration even if they can't be in Times Square with AC and Kathy. If you want to participate please check back in at ATA at the start of CNN's NYE program and click on comments to join in the conversation. Maybe we'll even fire up the Anderblue martini fountain?

Unlike the hardworking AC360 staff and crew I am not ready to end my holiday break just yet. So I've dusted off a few goodies from the ATA Archives for you to enjoy. ~Phebe

Back in the day when AC360's writers were allowed to be bright and clever Anderson Cooper used to take topics from the headlines to the Nth degree. By that we mean he would examine them in witty, amusing ways.
In these two Nth's AC takes a look at Bono saying 'This is really, really fucking brilliant'. Bono did this on national television during the 2003 Golden Globes. The FCC ruled that the singer used the word as an adjective thus making it permissible.
Here's Cooper's original take on the subject:

And his follow-up Nth:

Which reminds me of the classic George Carlin routine about the 7 words you can't say on television. Fair warning it is not for the faint of heart. Serioulsy...please don't watch this if you offend easily.

The weather outside is frightful...

It's awfully cold here and judging by reports, many of you are suffering from an overload of snow, ice, and cold weather as well. I guess there are colder places we could be. Enjoy these shots of Anderson filming PIP in Greenland. Brrr....

After venturing out, I realized I could take a few cues from Anderson and the scientists about appropriate cold weather gear. Our puzzle tonight is a shot of a happy Anderson "playing in the snow." Even frozen, the man still manages to look fantastic!

I didn't want to leave you with such a "chilly" blog so I thought I might warm you up with Round 3 of the Anderson Trivia Challenge.

Stay safe and warm out there this week as you continue to enjoy your holiday. See you back here next year! Em

The Man Behind the Curtain

One thing Anderson has figured out is that if he wants to be successful he needs to surround himself with talented people. One person Anderson depends on every time he goes on location is CNN senior producer Charlie Moore. Cyn found an article about Charlie on the Athens (GA) Banner Herald website.

In the article, Anderson says "Charlie i
s the best producer I've ever traveled with. He is incredibly hard working. Even in the midst of very stressful situations, he is able to keep things in perspective and able to laugh at the absurdity of situations we sometimes find ourselves in. If I was in a jam anywhere in the world, there is no one I'd rather be with than Charlie Moore. I trust him completely. His talent, his judgment and his sense of fairness and decency are remarkable."

And Charlie says in the article, "Anderson is a compelling guy, a great reporter and has a passion to see the story and report on the facts. It is a wonderful experience to be on his team. My job is one in which I get excited thinking about the day when I come in each day."

Here is Charlie with his brother, Duncan in a Georgia Alumni magazine article ATA covered back in September 2007.

And here are some pics of Charlie hard at work...

Ju Ju and AC

ABC News recently announced George Stephanopoulos and JuJu Chang would be joining the Good Morning America team. Stephanopoulos will anchor the broadcast with Robin Roberts and Juju Chang has been named the news anchor for GMA.JuJu Chang has anchored at ABC in the past. She was the co-anchor along with Anderson Cooper at the World News Now overnight desk from 1999 until 2000.
Barry Mitchell, who performed musical parodies on WNN penned this musical number for JuJu and Anderson in honor of the WNN Bus Tour. Enjoy!

Merry Christmas to All!

In December of 2005 ATA was only about a month old and still struggling to find its way. I wrote a poem for my Christmas post that year, never realizing that Anderson had also written an homage to Clement Moore, for a Christmas Nth Degree, a few years before.
Every year, whether for good luck or just because I'm lazy, I repost Anderson's Christmas Nth and my poem.

The ladies of All Things Anderson wish all of our wonderful readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
~Phebe, Quitty, Tedi B., Em, Julie and Wonz

with acknowledgment to Clement Moore

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the loft,
not a creature was stirring, 'twas all quiet and soft.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

Anderfans were nestled at home, in their beds,
while visions of Anderson danced in their heads.
And Andy in his PJ's with Molly on his lap
had just settled in for a long winter's nap.

When outside the loft there arose such a clatter,
Andy sprang from his bed to see what was the matter.
Thinking a news story was about to be broken,
He knew what to do, no words need be spoken.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
gave just enough light to broadcast a show,
he'd need a film crew, there must be a way,
But wait, what was that, a miniature sleigh?

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
Andy thought for a moment it must be St. Nick.
But he knew he was wrong the closer they came,
Who was that whistling and shouting out names?
"Now Miles! Now Larry! Now, Erika you vixen!
On, Rob! On, Chad! On Sonjay, Wolf Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
Anderson knew what to do from watching the sky
so up to his penthouse the coursers they flew,
with the sleigh full of toys, and oh my God, Aaron Brown, too!

And then, in a twinkling, Andy heard on the roof
the prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As he drew in his head and was turning around,
down the chimney Aaron came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of resumes he had flung on his back,
and he looked like an unemployed newscaster just opening his sack.

His eyes--how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
Aaron asked if newspaper headlines were still being read ,
AC said no, that and Nth degree are gone, buried, dead.
The bump music has changed, as have the sets,
Aaron smiled and said "All is good, I've no regrets".

My golf game is aces since I've been put on the shelf,
and Andy laughed when Aaron said that, in spite of himself.
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Let Anderson know he had nothing to dread.

Aaron said with a sigh "I'm still out of work,
but don't you feel bad, it's Klein that's a jerk."
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
and giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, 'ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"

Wednesday's AC360

Erica Hill began tonight's show talking about healthcare reform with Jessica Yellin. There were seven votes in the Senate today, mostly from Republicans trying to stop the bill. The vote on the actual bill is scheduled for 7:00 Christmas Eve morning which itself caused controversy as Republicans and Democrats disagreed on the times. The House bill and proposed Senate bill are very different. After the Senate bill is passed there will be a lot of work needed to merge the two.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta spoke with Erica earlier on the shortage of family doctors and said that Massachusetts can be considered a model for how to handle healthcare. The healthcare bill may address the shortage by providing loan forgiveness programs for people becoming primary care physicians. Another crucial element is encouraging people to see their doctor rather than just going to the emergency room.

Next Tom Foreman had the raw politics report on how the President is doing. They discussed details on the economy, healthcare, and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

David Gergen, Leslie Sanchez, and Tanya Acker also discussed the President's progress so far. On the healthcare bill David Gergen gave the President an A- on political leadership but felt that the substance of the healthcare bill was an issue and gave him a B- for that. Leslie Sanchez gave him a C because of how he handled healthcare in a partisan way. Tanya Acker gave him a B looking at many of the concerns Leslie Sanchez brought up from a different perspective. Next they discussed the economy. Gergen graded him an incomplete because he hasn't seen enough yet. Leslie Sanchez gave him a D because of the continuation of bailouts and spending and the unemployment rate. Tanya Acker gave him a B because of some of the TARP money being paid back and increases in the DOW but she does agree that there still is a lot of work to do. Next they graded Obama on how he has handled the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Gergen gave him a A-, Leslie Sanchez gave him a B, and Tanya Acker gave him an A-.

Randi Kaye was in with the bulletin: a winter storm is hitting the midwest, there have been tornadoes in Texas, in Virginia police officers are trying to talk to a gunman holding five hostages in a post office, Michael Brewer who was burned when a group of teenagers set him on fire is going home, and Prince William spent a night on the street to highlight the struggle of the homeless.

Next was the story of Sean Goldman who will be going back to his father David Goldman, possibly as soon as tomorrow morning. Erica spoke with Robi Ludwig on how Sean might handle the change since he's lived away from his biological father and in a different country for more than half of his life. Sunny Hostin also talked about what is in the best interest of Sean Goldman whose maternal Grandmother said that Sean doesn't want to go back with his biological father. They also talked about whether Sean, at 9 years old, would be old enough to decide where he really wanted to be.

Randi Kaye had the story of a Boeing 737 that overshot the runway in Jamaica, broke apart after landing and almost went into the Caribbean sea. All the passengers were able to escape alive. Ninety people were taken to the hospital.

Randi also had the second bulletin of the night: Richard Heene has been sentence to 90 days in jail and his wife, Mayumi, has been sentence to 20 days, Bernie Maydoff has been moved to a medical facility, Amy Winehouse has been accused of assault, and a man dressed as Santa robbed a Nashville bank.

The Beat 360 picture was of Richard Heene and his wife Mayumi arriving at court for their sentencing hearing. The staff winner was Jill with "Richard Heene, Science detective, and his wife start filming their new reality show: 'Behind Bars'". The viewer winner was Richard with "After the Reality TV balloon bubble bursts, reality sets in."

The shot tonight was another look back at some of 360's favorite moments of 2009 including Anderson learning to cut onions with Bobby Flay, AC handling a snake, the visit from Oscar the grouch, and a replay of the floor crew dancing to Single Ladies.

And many thanks to Phebe for our video extra tonight. Some of you may recognize it from Christmas two years ago but without AC in this week we thought we could all use a few pictures to enjoy.

Happy holidays everyone!
