AC360 Back in Haiti

No one deserves to die in silence, and no one's struggle to live should go unnoticed as well. ~Anderson Cooper As most of you know AC and the 360 team are back in Haiti this week to update the world on the progress and the continued suffering.Anderson couldn't leave the Haiti story for others to tell, it has become too important to him. Here's what he had to say:

video

The most interesting and surprising news in Haiti today was the rescue of a man who had been trapped under the rubble for 27 days. Here's Dr. Gupta's report:
video

Anderson had a report on the clean up and burial process going on every day in Haiti:
video

Anderson spoke first with Karl Penhaul to get today's latest developments in Haiti on the missionary case:
video

Next AC spoke with Dan Simon to find out what was happening in Idaho where the missionaries are from:
video

Sanjay and AC talked with Francis Robles a reporter for the Miami Herald:
video

Sarah Palin isn't worth a minute of my time so I'll just mention that Randi Kaye covered the Tea Party news and leave it at that. Mary Matalin did the follow up discussion with AC.
James Carville and his lady Mary Matalin talked Superbowl with AC:

Brooke Baldwin was back doing the 360 Bulletin on Monday night.
• NATO troops in Afghanistan are preparing to launch one of their biggest attacks
• US and European Union called on Iran today to end abuses against it's own people
• 2010 Prius will be recalled for braking issues
• Hope for Haiti donations have begun to be released
• Congressman John Murtha died Monday at 77 years old
• Dr. Conrad Murry, Michael Jackson's doctor, was arraigned
• Richard Heene is out of jail and in a work release program
• More snow on the way for the mid-Atlantic States

I have a few new pictures of Anderson in Haiti to share with you:

A few readers emailed us over the weekend to tell us that Anderson was on The Soup on Friday night. Lucky for us Wonz captured the segment:

AC wrote an entry on the AC360 blog today about his return to Haiti. Follow the link if you haven't read it yet.

YouTube was down for maintenance tonight and Blogger and I don't get along very well. I'd like to thank Wonz for uploading the rubble and the Miami Herald reporter clips for me. Hopefully YouTube will be functional tomorrow because ATA doesn't want to miss chronicling one moment of AC in Haiti. Check back periodically because, just like last time, we'll be posting any live shots AC does during the day. ~Phebe

I liked Anderson's piece about how those in Haiti are coping 4 weeks later. The man with the generator charging people to charge there phones is smart.

The church group story gets weirder and weirder. They must have been desperate to get kids if they had kids days before the arrest occurred when they had the 33 kids. Apparently none of them have a brain or know how to use it if they do have one. Crazy people.

360 was pretty good last nite. Just my opinion, but I think its entirely too early for him to be back already. I think he ought to wait until people's interest really starts to wane and then go back. And yes I did see his blog post, but I still feel he should have stayed in NY. Just my opinion though.

I cannot thank you all enough for all of the hard work you do! I can't imagine "chronicling" anderson cooper all day on CNN. You guys much watch that network ALL day! By the way, I'm curious, do you all do this from home, or do you guys get away with doing this at work? I work the night-shift at a hotel so there's no time for me to watch AC360 or get online!

Isn't Anderson scheduled to be in LA for something next week? It escapes me now, but was certain there was something and I don't see anything on the calendar.

ACAnderFan, I agree that AC needed a longer break. I had a feeling while watching him last week that he wanted to return-I had no idea it would be so soon, but he had to follow his heart. Yet, he doesn't realize the emotional toll it is taking on him and his crew. He will recognize it much later. Furthermore, he is just such a serious minded person that he needs to seek the truth and "keep them honest in Haiti"- if that is possible. If anyone can AC can.

Moreover, when I read his blog about going back I was so proud of him for doing this wonderful work.If only we had this amount of professionalism in our politicans. Off my soapbox...

360 was great and I agree that the goofy church group is strange. I still can't figure out if they are all scammers or if the leader of the group is the true scammer and the others just dumb followers...anyway they all seem nuts.

I want to continue to thank everyone at ATA for all of the updates and pictures.

@Greta, Wonz and I both work part time from home so keeping up isn't as difficult as it would be in an office setting. Cyn and Julie also help out on weekends and after they get home from work. It's a true team effort, no one person could do this alone.

@anonymous 11:08, We have been neglecting the calendar, thanks for bringing it to our attention. AC is indeed speaking next week at the Reagan Library outside of LA. Thanks for the reminder.

While AC should be commended for indeed seeking the truth about Haiti it is about time he asked the question another poster asked as well: Where and why has our President sought to ignore this situation and why hasn't he made an appearance?? I know he and Michelle gave a $15,000 donation but if I were a Haitian, I'd be resentful and questioning.
Also, to change the subject matter a bit, how stupid is Sarah Palin? Judging from what she wrote on her palm, more stupid than we all originally thought. At least Obama makes good use of the telepromter. Couldn't she write her notes on an index card or they just don't have them in Alaska.

@Judy, I find your comments interesting but you’ve lost me on this one. I just don't get why you think the POTUS is remiss in not going to Haiti or doing a fly over (as you mentioned in a previous comment). If we had a major catastrophe in the US (God forbid) I won't expect Canada's Prime Minister or Haiti's or any leader of a foreign country for that matter to fly over or visit our disaster. It does no good and usually just creates a security issue and people on the ground have enough problems without adding one more. I think that our President has made the appropriate response to the situation.

@Phebe: Aren't there enough Haitian Americans living in the United States for him to do this?
If it were a country that contributed to his campaign and gave a large donation, you better believe he'd do more than a "fly over." He's made appearances in Mexico for far less reasons hasn't he??

Judy, the problem with the president going now is that it pulls resources (our military, etc) away from the important work that needs to be done right now. There doesn't seem to be any functioning government there for him to meet with, so he would be driving or choppering to the hospitals and refugee camps... with armed security having to shove back the crowds and all that. It would be a disaster and for nothing more than a morale boost and a photo op.

Once things get stabilized and the urgent needs have been met, I'm sure he will go. Michelle and the kids will probably go, too. But right now, Haitians need practical help, not visits from heads of state. (And he's gone to Mexico for presidential summits regarding trade and the drug war, not after they have had a natural disaster.)

@Judy, I agree with everyone else that it wouldn't make much sense for Obama to actually go to Haiti. He has made public statements concerning Haiti which is just as effective as a photo-op in Haiti would be. Also, Hilliary Clinton and Bill Clinton have already visited Haiti on behalf of the US. They did as much as Obama would have, yet Obama was able to stay in Washington and work on many of the other tough problems we as a country are going through.
