The Compañero Award was created by the Commission to recognize leaders outside of the Latino community, who, through their efforts, have contributed to improving the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS and to the fight against the disease in the Latino community. Past recipients have included Randi Weingarten, United Federation of Teachers, Dr. Howard Grossman, Ortho Biotech; Dr. Roy Gulick, director of the Cornell HIV Clinical Trials Unit; Dr. Fred Valentine, researcher; Sandra Thurman, former director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy; HIV/AIDS researcher, Dr. David Ho; Susan Berresford, president of the Ford Foundation; and Sean Strub, publisher of POZ Magazine.
