My Google Bitch

I don't blog much anymore, but when I have something to say it's nice to have ATA as an outlet. Today is one of those days, so please bear with me while I get a few Google related bitches out of my system.

Several of you noticed that Google changed our ATA comment page without notice, or our consent or approval. When they did this they took away the option of having comments emailed to readers.
Book Asylum has found a workaround for those of you who are interested. If you click on the title of the post it will open and you'll see, at the bottom of the page, Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). This is the link that will give you just the feed for the comments on that post. If you want to subscribe to all comments on ATA here's that link:

My second Google bitch will focus on Google Alerts. Lately it seems like Google tries its hardest to thwart small, independent, not-for-profit bloggers. When I first started this blog 6 years ago Google went out of its way to support the little guy. That's not the case anymore and it frustrates the hell out of me.

I went back through my inbox for the first two days of this week and I received 13 Anderson Cooper alerts from Google about Bethenny Frankel, all were links to sites offering the exact same information about Ms. Frankel flashing Anderson. Last week the alert de jour was something about MIA and Cooper getting into a Twitter fight. I probably got more than 20 of those.
How many alerts were there last week to original information on ATA you ask? One. Yes, just one and it was a link to a blog post that was almost a week old. Also there were no alerts to any of the other small blogs who mentioned AC in their posts.

I am not delusional, I know that this little rant won't change a thing, except maybe my blood pressure. Thanks for those of you who still read, whether we're in a Google Alert or not.

I miss your take on things, nice to see you back, even if it is to rant. Maybe you have lost your bliss just like so many others?

Not going to defend Google - I am irritated with them as well. But in the spirit of fairness, any search . would have probably sent you the same results (even though they were copies of each other). To send you just unique hits with no duplication of the subject matter would entail an extremely sophisticated search algorithm that would probably take longer to complete than you would like. I get google alerts too for my environment blog and well, mostly I get duplicates but at least it usually gives me the original source.

I feel your pain but i'm not sure what you want is going to be available any time soon.
