Anderson Cooper 360, Friday, November 30, 2012

Anderson was out of the AC360 anchor chair again tonight and Ashleigh Banfield was filling in.  With CNN Heroes airing Sunday evening (see press release at the end of this post); and that were he still alive today, Gordon Parks would be celebrating his 100th birthday, we thought it fitting to re-visit this 2010 CNN video and blog post where Anderson talks about his personal hero, Gordon Parks ~

"He is the person that probably put the spark in me about reporting." ~ Anderson Cooper

And Anderson questions about his personal hero, Mr. Parks on CNN.com ~

Pioneering photographer inspired Anderson Cooper
November 19, 2010

"Before I even knew what the word cool meant, I knew Gordon Parks was cool." CNN's Anderson Cooper

(CNN) -- Since 2007, Anderson Cooper has hosted "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute," a gala that honors the Top 10 CNN Heroes of the year.

In preparation for this year's show, CNN asked Cooper for his thoughts about the event and who he admires.

CNN: Who is your personal hero?
Anderson Cooper: Growing up, I had someone who was sort of a mentor who was really a hero to me -- a man named Gordon Parks, who actually was quite famous. He was the first African-American photographer for Life magazine, first African-American to direct a major Hollywood picture ("The Learning Tree" in 1969). And he passed away just a few years ago, and he's somebody who still to this day I think of often.

CNN: Why do you think Gordon Parks was heroic?
Cooper: Gordon Parks was a guy who was born into nothing. ... There was no strong family. There was no one telling him how he should be and what steps he should take. You know, there's that term, you pull yourself up from your own bootstraps? Well, he built his own bootstraps.

And he felt something inside of him that pushed him to pick up a camera. And to start taking pictures. And then to get himself to be the first African-American photographer at Life magazine. And to take some of the pictures he did, and what he told us in the story of his pictures ... he told stories that Life magazine wasn't covering before. Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam. And gangs in Harlem. And Gordon could get access that other people couldn't get.

And yet what I found so heroic about him is that he had such a decent heart. And he was driven. But it wasn't a drive purely about himself. It wasn't a drive to make the most money. It was a drive to give back and a drive to sort of give voice to the feelings inside him, whether that was through photography or through poetry or through writing.
He wrote best-selling books. Directed films (including "Shaft" in 1971). He was truly a Renaissance man.

It's always very interesting to me why some people have that inner drive and that push forward. And he certainly did. And there was no reason for him to have it. He could have had every excuse in the book for not accomplishing something with his life, but he lived many lives and he accomplished things in all of those lives. And I think that he was a true hero.

CNN: Sounds like Gordon Parks had quite an impact on you.
Cooper: I think he's the person who probably put the spark in me about reporting and about getting out there and seeing the world. He took photographs in Brazil and in the favellas in Rio and wrote books about one of the young men he met there. There were just so many stories that he would tell. And he was such a cool character. He was so incredibly dashing. He was the coolest guy. Before I even knew what the word cool meant, I knew Gordon Parks was cool.

Ratings for the week ended November 11 ~

From Broadcasting and Cable:
Syndication Ratings: Syndies Thankful for Daylight Savings Darker days bring gifts of season-best ratings
The arrival of daylight savings -- and darker, colder days -- meant a marked increase in the performance of most syndicated shows in the week ended Nov. 11, with many programs turning in season- or series-highs.

Ratings for the prior week ended Nov. 4, was broken out by Nielsen. That's due to preemptions and power outages due to Superstorm Sandy, which hit the East Coast on Oct. 29. To be "broken out" that means that any show that lost 10% or more of its coverage - and that was all nationally-cleared shows in that week -- did not have its ratings counted in its average for the week. Shows were measured in all available markets, however.

As a result, this week's shows will be measured against their performance of two weeks ago, which was the week ended Oct. 28.

CBS Television Distribution's Dr. Phil continued to dominate the talkers for the 8th consecutive week, hitting a season-high 3.2, up 7% from two weeks prior. Phil also was tops among women 25-54, jump 12% to a 1.9.

Disney-ABC's Live! with Kelly and Michael came in second, with its best performance since its season premiere, when Strahan was finally named Regis Philbin's successor and Kelly Ripa's permanent co-host. Compared to two weeks earlier, Live! grew 12% to a 2.8, matching its season high.

In third place, Warner Bros.' Ellen scored a new season-high 2.6, marking an 8% increase. Sony's Dr. Oz picked up 9% to also hit a new season-high 2.5, and narrowed the margin that the show has declined year to year, dropping just 7% from last year at this time.

The top-ten talker with the biggest improvement from two weeks earlier was NBCUniversal's Maury, which jumped 14% to a new season-high 2.4 and led the category among women 18-49 with a 1.6 and women 18-34 with a 1.4.

CTD's Rachael Ray ramped up 7% to a 1.5. NBCU's Steve Wilkos also advanced 7% to a new season-best 1.5, tying Rachael and clocking the largest year-to-year gain of any talk show, adding 15%.

CTD's The Doctors held steady at a 1.4, tying NBCU's Jerry Springer, which spiked 8%.

Warner Bros.' Anderson Live! -- the host of which, CNN's Anderson Cooper, is currently covering the hostilities in the Middle East from the Gaza Strip -- slipped 9% to a 1.0, tying Debmar-Mercury's Wendy Williams, which was flat. Debmar-Mercury's Jeremy Kyle gained one-tenth of a ratings point, or 20%, to a new season-high 0.6.

Among the rookies, Disney-ABC's Katie earned a 1.8, off 5% from two weeks ago. NBCU's Steve Harvey added 8% to return to its steady season-average 1.3. CTD's Jeff Probst, Twentieth's Ricki Lake and NBCU's Trisha all held firm at a 0.7, 0.7 and 0.5, respectively. (Please click on the above link to read the entire post.)

NOTE:  That while it states Anderson "is currently covering the hostilities in the Middle East from the Gaza Strip" the ratings for this post were for two weeks prior, when Anderson was hosting 'Anderson Live.'  Also, for those interested, in the same week last year 'Anderson' had a 1.3HH rating.
