Sunday Flashback Series: The Introduction

The original  season of The Mole consisted of nine episodes, aired from January 9, 2001 - February 28, 2001 and was hosted by Anderson Cooper. Today we begin a Sunday series devoted to The Mole -Season 1.

Anderson had this to say about leaving WNN for the Mole:

My last year at ABC, I was working overnights anchoring this newscast, then during the day at 20/20. So I was sleeping in two- or four-hour shifts, and I was really tired and wanted a change. I wanted to clear my head and get out of news a little bit, and I was interested in reality TV — and it was interesting.

Anderson stopped by WNN to do a little promotion before the program aired and at the end Barry had a little career advice for him.

The only "reality" game shows I've ever watched and liked were The Amazing Race and The Mole. AC sometimes seems embarrassed about having done this show, but it was actually very smart and well produced--and the locales were gorgeous (like TAR). AC was a funny, sarcastic and devious host--it was a great show. Season 2 was even better.

Looking forward to watching these clips in the coming weeks. Are you going to do The Mole season 2 also? I haven't seen it since the original airing.

Oh, wow! "The Mole"! I remember a few bits and pieces of the show and think I know who the Mole was but I won't spill the beans here.

The other thing I remember about "The Mole" is Anderson talking about it during an early appearance with David Letterman. Anderson said he needed a break from the news and thought it would be a good idea. Unfortunately, most of the contestants turned out to be really annoying. Letterman asked about that and Anderson explained that in normal circumstances they were probably nice people but in the context of the show they were always scrutinizing him and watching him closely for clues about the Mole's identity. Anderson said he dealt with it by trying to get them drunk every day.
