Anderson Cooper 360 on Monday, July 27, 2015

Anderson Cooper anchored an expanded 2 hour edition of AC360 from the NYC studio on Monday night.  The topics ranged from The Donald to authorities finding a garage full of guns, ammo and cash in a dead man's home in CA.

A few more photos showed up of Anderson with Donald Trump in the lobby of Trump Tower talking to Trump supporters following his interview last week.

I HAVE BEEN WONDERING HOW ANDERSON RECONCILES HIS ADMIRATION FOR JOHN MC CAIN WITH HIS APPARENT
ADMIRATION FOR THE NOW PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE DONALD TRUMP? WHILE IT IS CERTAINLY TRUE THAT TRUMP HAS A LOYAL FOLLOWING, SO DOES MC CAIN.
ANDERSON HAS HAD MC CAIN ON DOZENS OF TIMES ON 360, AND ON EACH OF THOSE TIMES, IT WAS FOR THE SAME REASON:
TO CRITICIZE THE POLICIES OF PRESIDENT OBAMA.
I FIND IT A BIT HYPOCRITICAL OF AC TO DENOUNCE TRUMP'S ACCUSATIONS OF MC CAIN AND YET PANDER TO
TRUMP'S EVERY MOVE. WHILE I REALIZE HE IS "JUST DOING HIS JOB," HE ISN'T DOING IT WHEN HE SEEMINGLY CONCURS
WITH MC CAIN ABOUT THE DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.

AC is under Trump's spell. The way he defended the Trump show tonight was something to see. Both he and Trump's surrogate attack Ana can't remember her last night. They ganged up on that woman tonight. She seemed a bit took back by it... and embarrassed. Tonight doing the daily Trump discussion they brought up Mike Huckabee's outrageous comments. I'm not a big fan of this deal but to bring up the Holocaust is completely inappropriate. I already loathe Huckabee for his anti glbt stance... and this certainly didn't help my disdain for him and rest of gop field. Hilary was brought up for a second, AC asked if she was a definite nominee for the democrats. I wonder how this email investigation will go... I'm not jumping up and down for Hilary, I think she is a bit disingenuous... and not really trustworthy but she is better than any gop contender. I would like to see a few more dems get into the race to make it a bit more competitive, but she might implode due to a scandal, attacks I don't know. AC had a few more segments tonight, the road rage shooting in Florida. The missing boys from Jupiter Florida. And another tragedy. The death of Bobbi Christina. So tragic and young. 22 and gone. Just sad and preventable. Young lady did not have to die. Its hard to judge an AC360 show these days. It was neither good or poor. Just ok. Everything just seems passionless on this show... they don't go in depth on the important things but want to go in depth on Trump. One thing I got from this show was, attacks on Trump coverage is a no-no! The surrogate for Jeb Bush found that out. Btw why is Santorum, huckabee, Paul, perry, Graham running? When They poll at one percent?

After a quick mention of President Obama's comments, Anderson quickly returned to Donald Trump. Trump is on top of another poll. A report followed on Trump and other GOP candidates including backlash on Huckabee for his line about Obama, Israel, the Iran deal and ovens. The panel was Michael Cohen from the Trump campaign and Ana Navarro. Unfornately, the video of Cohen and Navarro's discussion is not up on 360's website. Maybe ATA has a recording of this panel? I was distracted by a discussion of my own with my DH about Presidents without any prior public office experience. In the 20th century, there was Eisenhower. But is anyone comparing Trump to Eisenhower? Nope.

The following subjects got their own segments on Monday's 360:
- the two teenage boys who disappeared off the coast of Florida
- the death of Bobbi Kristina Brown and a good panel with Sunny Hostin and Dr. Drew Pinsky
- a Drew Griffin report about a badly-behaving jobs center for disabled people
- a Randi Kaye report on a road rage incident that ended in gunfire; this segment also had a short Q&A with Will Ripley about the Chinese woman killed by an escalator.

I didn't watch the second hour.

Today's Tangent - Jesse Ventura. I'm a Minnesotan and I see shades of Ventura in Trump. During the gubernatorial campaign back in 1998, Ventura, previously the Mayor of Brooklyn Park (a Minneapolis suburb) came on strong. He was the Reform Party candidate and got enough support to be included in the televised debates with the Repulican and Democratic candidates. Those two candidates were Hubert "Skip" Humphrey III (D) and Norm Coleman (R) There were many in each party who were not thrilled by their own nominees.
Ventura came across as a toughtalking straight shooter. He was fiscally conservative and socially liberal. He won the race with just a shade under 37% of the vote. And then he tried to govern.
Some things did get done like property tax changes and getting a budget for the first light-rail system in the state. But most of the time Ventura was fighting with the legislature. He didn't like them and they didn't like him. Being in the Reform Party, Ventura didn't have any natural allies in the legislature. After figuratively bashing heads with the legislature for three years, Ventura announced he would not run for re-election.

In conclusion, running for office is easy. Actually doing the job is the hard part.

AC360 may not like it but President Obama is still president and it follows that when a statement is directed towards him, you show HIS response/reaction first and THEN Hillary's, but that's not how AC360 handled Huckabee's offensive comments on the Iran deal. Ok, I know I'm very paranoid and suspicious when it comes to AC360's treatment of POTUS and this is not the most important thing in the world, but it still annoyed me because it's another example of the dismissive/disrespectful stance 360 seems to take with President Obama. Meanwhile AC's new favorite person, Donald Trump, had his rep on to go after Ana Navarro and Jeb Bush. Michael Cohen represents Trump the way you'd expect, big on bluster and slogans, short on details, policies and specifics. Ana's Jeb game was not on point because AC and Cohen were anxious to shoot down all of her defenses. Cohen came off like a real jerk but I was glad to see him make Ana flustered--someone needs to tell her that the "dysfunction" in Washington has been perpetuated solely by HER PARTY, THE REPUBLICANS, for the past six years. Too bad the Republican base is too ignorant and bigoted to recognize that their anger is misplaced and voting against their own interests for a bloated bloviator like Trump isn't going to solve a darn thing and will probably make things worse. Anderson needs to cool it a bit with his enthusiasm for Trump if he doesn't want to be accused of favoritism. He been coming off like he's way too invested in Trump's free-wheeling campaign, as if that's the only thing that matters for a candidate. Those 'policy papers' Trump thinks he can ignore may come back to haunt him. Insults and boasting can only take you so far.

Of course there was no mention at all of President Obama's trip to Kenya and his push for LGBT equality/acceptance in Africa. The other reports on 360 didn't interest me. AC seems to do politics for one or two segments and the rest of the show is always focused on crime/corruption/tragedy/heroism type stories these days. With the exception of the political coverage, I'm not really crazy about this kind of content on the show.

Did you noticed that AC was pushing back and defending Trump to? He definitely is showing favoritism and ignoring other presidential hopefuls. He ignored boy scouts allowing gay scout leaders and President speaking out against inequality for glbt people on Kenya. AC360, AC is obsessed with Trump. The other segments bored me... I skipped second hour. AC acted like a Trump surrogate doing the segment. Theh may not want to show that on AC360. It was clear bias....

I was certain that AC would be more interested in GOP candidate Bobby Jindal who is from Louisiana. Since we all know AC likes to discuss his love of New Orleans. However AC has not mentioned Bobby Jindal once, at least that I know of and instead is obsessing over Trump.

I'm also sad that AC no longer travels out of the country for work anymore, unless it is for 60 Minutes but even that is rare now. I wonder what happened the last two years that made him change so much. He was doing such an amazing job and now he's just like every other journalist on TV. Boring, repetitive, and biased. I never thought I would day this but I'm starting to favor Jake Tapper over Anderson. Tapper seems to cover more and goes in depth.

But all that aside, I can't wait until the GOP debates, those are going to be fun to watch.

@anon 11:45 pm, I think it may have been you who wrote a comment on another post about how 'hero' John McCain was willing to put the country at risk by having Palin as his VP choice--thank you for saying that--it's something that many people forget.

@CWM84, Anderson keeps bringing up the fact that Trump isn't scripted and that he's always available to the press and takes (but doesn't always answer) questions and that he doesn't think or talk like your typical politician and just says whatever's on his mind. AC is smart enough to know that it's going to take more than that to be a real leader who has to make serious decisions with real consequences, but you'd never know it by the way he's been fawning all over Trump for the past few weeks.

@Unicorns Bacon, Bobby Jindal is one of those Republican governors whose economic policies have nearly destroyed their states--same goes for Christie and Walker, but since AC is so enamored with Trump, it's not likely he'll ever get around to talking about Jindal or any of the other candidates--in fact, I'm not sure if Anderson's ever spoken about Jindal--maybe during the BP crisis. I'm not crazy about Jake Tapper, but his show does have more substantial content than AC360 in general. I can't imagine that Anderson is happy with the direction the show's been taking but I don't know who's the biggest culprit, him, his producers or Jeff Zucker.

Why does Anderson continue his obsession with Trump after Trump's tweet dissing Anderson's interview with him?

Why does Anderson continue his obsession with Trump after Trump's tweet dissing Anderson's interview with him? -- I'm guessing it's all about ratings. Ratings are all that Zucker/CNN seem to care about and sadly, Anderson seems to have completely sold out.

@YES ARIES MOON: RIGHT AGAIN.....IT WAS I WHO SAID THAT THE "GREAT HERO," JOHN MC CAIN PUT OUR
COUNTRY AT RISK BY PICKING "AN IDIOT" I THINK I SAID MORON, FOR HIS RUNNING MATE. AND SOMEONE SHOULD CALL HIM OUT ON
IT AND HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE, SINCE HE HOLDS HIS HEAD UP HIGH WITH HIS "BADGE OF HONOR" FOR HIS
CONSISTENT REMINDER OF THE GREAT SACRIFICE HE MADE SOME THIRTY ODD YEARS AGO. ONLY TO COME HOME,
DIVORCE HIS DEARLY BELOVED, AND MARRY ONE OF THE WEALTHIEST WOMEN IN DC.
NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL A REAL HERO....AND LET NO ONE, ESPECIALLY PRESIDENT OBAMA, FORGET TI.

Phebe said...

Anonymous 11:57, John McCain did divorce his first wife, you are correct. But he did not marry the richest woman in DC after that, Cindy McCain is from Arizonia and her fortune was made here. John McCain established residency here because of Cindy's roots and family business.

@PHEBE: I REALIZED THAT AFTER I SENT THE EMAIL AND IT WAS CONFUSING.....I MEANT IN THE AREA.
I AMEND MY STATEMENT: MC CAIN REMARRIED ONE OF THE RICHEST WOMEN IN ARIZONA.
HAVE WE ALL FORGOTTEN THAT "OUR HERO" COULDN'T REMEMBER HOW MANY HOMES HE/SHE OWNED DURING THE'O8
DEBATES? POOR GUY.
