Anderson Cooper 360 on Wednesday, July 29, 2015

Anderson Cooper anchored an expanded two hour edition of AC360 from the NYC studio on Wednesday night.  There was breaking news on a possible piece of plane from missing Malaysian Flight 370, the daily Trump interview/panel discussion and segments on Cecil the Lion, the indictment of the cop that shot and killed Sam Dubose, and the last segment in the second hour was on the death of Mullah Omar with good background information:

I found it interesting that Anderson kept asking if Trump's comments about how he treated the lawyer taking a deposition years ago was relevant and would stick. I'm sure those that like Trump will say it was in the past and try to dismiss it. The fact that he said what he did at the time and then what he continued to say about her today was very disturbing to me. It says a lot about Trump's character and there will be a character debate before the general election. Trump is not polling well with the general electorate and in the end elections are pretty much all about character. I also find the comparisons to Ronald Reagan disturbing. I was not a fan of Reagan, nor do I think he was that good of a President, but he was governor of CA for two terms, so much more qualified than Trump. The State of IL elected a billionaire businessman for Governor (he in many ways bought the election with his own money) and he's finding government a very different environment than business. He's pretty ineffective and it's clear he has no idea how to govern. He's trying strong arm business tactics, but that doesn't work with elected officials. A bully billionaire business man for President is a nightmare scenario and most people recognize that.

The report on Mullah Omar was interesting. These were the type of segments that would appear regularly on AC360 and what made me a fan of the program. Would love to have heard what Peter Bergan had to say, but instead we get more Trump fan fiction.

The start of the first hour of Wednesday's 360 had two segments on Malaysia flight 370. A possible piece of the plane washed ashore on Reunion Island of the Madagascar and this setting off all new kinds of theories and speculation. I liked seeing Richard Quest again and I liked his piece at the map explaining ocean currents. I missed a big chunk of the panel with Miles O'Brien and that other guy.

There was more analysis of MH 370, a review what happened, questions of hijacking, landing, mechanical failure and other guesses. The panel here was David Soucie, Miles O'Brien and Richard Quest.

A few years ago, Trump was giving a deposition to some lawyers; he got angry and upset when one of them asked for a break so she could pump breast milk. Trump called her "vicious and horrible" for ... I don't know, for wanting to pump breast milk or for because this is news now. That was the topic of today's Trump segment. In the clip with Dana Bash, Trump said the lawyer wanted to pump milk "right in front of me". When Anderson introduced the panel (Jeffrey Lords, a man and a woman), I checked on Hayes.
Hayes was in the middle of an interview with Elizabeth Beck, the woman Trump is mad at. I stayed to watch. Beck said Trump is lying and that she had the court documents and emails to prove it. Can Beck be on 360 soon to state her side of the story? The headline on the 360 website, "Anderson Cooper goes beyond the headlines to tell stories from many points of view, so you can make up your own mind about the news." So having Beck on 360 would be a good idea, don't you think? She'll verbally bash Trump, no doubt, but if you want "many points of view", isn't Beck's an important one to have?

Ryan Young's report on the backlash Walter Palmer is receiving was very good. I'm glad he showed the protest at Palmer's dental office; not all Minnesotans don't agree with "trophy" killing of beautiful and rare wild animals. I also liked seeing Jimmy Kimmel's comment from his show included. Kimmel showed a website - www.wildcru.org - belonging to the wildlife preservation organization which collared and tracked Cecil; he asked people to donate. I wish the 360 report had included that information. The local news had a bit more coverage, more talking to the protesters and more on where Palmer (he's "gone underground") might be (he also has a home in Florida).

The last segment of the first hour was on the death of Samuel DuBose, an unarmed black man, by a cop, Officer Tensing, at a traffic stop in Cincinnati. Miguel Marquez had a good report and answered a few questions from Anderson.

@Anon 12:15 AM - Maybe you saw my post the other day about my former Governor Jesse Ventura. Ventura was a pro-wrestler, an actor in a few films and Mayor of Brooklyn Park before he became Governor. He was the Reform Party candidate and won with less than 37% of the vote. Just like your boy Rauner, Ventura could not work with the state legislature. Some things did get done but, they never got along and Ventura did not run for re-election. Rauner is practically brand new. Is he smart enough to learn how to "do business" with the Illinois state legislature or are you guys doomed to three and a half more years of nothing getting done?
For all ATAers, this is relevant because the experiences of Ventura and Rauner give some clues of how Trump, if elected President, would work with Congress.

Maybe 360 should've aired the report on the murder of Samuel Dubose by a police officer in Cincinnati before showing the piece on the killing of Cecil the lion--I'm as upset and angry about Cecil as most people are but it was a little jarring to see the way 360 prioritized the two stories. I realize there are people out there who care more about the welfare of animals than about human beings being shot down in cold blood by the folks who are supposed to serve and protect us, but 360 reflecting those feelings sends a bad message. Yes, I realize that there may have been other factors in determining which report should air first, but the outcome didn't sit well with me and some others who posted similar comments on Twitter.

The people who support Donald Trump and don't care what he says, how he says it, who he offends and why, are just the uncivilized, ignorant tantrum-throwers who started the Tea Party movement after President Obama was elected--what everyone seems to have forgotten was that the more vocal the Tea Party got, the less people liked them and their popularity nose-dived because people began to recognize that their form of 'patriotism' goes against every decent thing this country has ever stood for. The right wing billionaire Koch Brothers are snubbing Trump and will probably bury him if he takes his campaign any further. He's rich, but they're REALLY, REALLY rich and they run the Republican show now.

Trump may have messed with the wrong woman when he called Elizabeth Beck 'disgusting'. I saw her on Chris Hays' show and she seemed just as tough, angry and outspoken as he is. She repeatedly called him a liar and had lots of documents to back up her complaints. She did seem a little unhinged though!

I wonder if Ms. Beck has any sort of case she can bring against Trump? I don't know for what though but if Trump is lying maybe there is something there.

IMO, any gentleman or anyone with manners would respect someone who makes a request such as this. I don't think she was trying to pump in front of Trump, she was just pulling out her pump, but either way, Trump didn't have to call her disgusting, just ask her to not pump in front of him,

What is someone has to just take a bathroom break? Would Trump allow that?

Wasn't impressed with yesterday's show. I'm glad there was a bigger segment on the outrage of the barbarians who slaughtered that poor lion. Stuff like this is just sick and wrong. I understand the need to kill for food. It is a part of nature what we are pissed about is the hunting for sport. This guy can pay 55,000 just to kill an animal or people. Its just sick and barbaric! Then to skin behead the animal was just over the top. I hope this scum is brought to justice. How can someone live with themselves doing that to an animal? Animals for food is one thing but for sport, I swear it should be outlawed. Poaching is wrong and something that is a big problem as Planet in Peril highlighted in 2007. I don't think this Trump, attorney thing will stop his momentum. Its going to have to be a slur caught on audio about blacks or something or him advocating rape. Donald simply stating something is "Disgusting" will not affect him much. If someone is looking to bring Trump down they are going to have to do something better than that. Lol. I noticed AC kept talking about Trumps supporters. He meant to say, "we Trump supporters" I don't get it. He was for McCain, for Romney in 2012 now she's very enthused by Trump. All anti Obama guys who are against glbt equality. It must be a Money thing...

WHAT IS MISSING IN THE LION STORY OR HIS DEATH IS THAT PETA GOT INVOLVED AFTER THE FACT.
IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT PEOPLE ARE BARBARIANS AND CAN HUNT IN THE WILD FOR SPORT BUT SOME OF THESE
EXOTIC CREATURES ARE BECOMING EXTINCT AND THERE NUMBERS ARE SO LOW THAT MATING IS BECOMING IMPOSSIBLE SO THERE IS NO NEW BREEDING....LIKE THE LION FOR EXAMPLE.
AND WHAT IS MORE AGGRAVATING IS THAT IN THE END, IT IS ALL DUE TO GREED, PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
THE ELEPHANT POPULATION IN AFRICA IS ALMOST EXTINCT BECAUSE OF THE VALUE PLACED ON THEIR TUSKS....AGAIN GREED, SOLD TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER.
IF IT WASN'T FOR ORGANIZATIONS LIKE PETA, EXPOSING THESE ATROCITIES NO ONE WOULD BE AWARE OF HOW
UNRULY THESE BARBARIANS HAVE BECOME, AND YES, THIS DENTIST IS A BARBARIAN.

HUFFPOST IS REPORTING THAT IT WAS CECIL'S BROTHER THAT WAS ACTUALLY KILLED. I DON'T WANT TO MAKE
A TRAGEDY INTO A COMEDY OF ERRORS, BUT HOW DO THEY KNOW THIS? WAS THERE A DNA TEST OR DID CECIL
HIMSELF COME BACK FROM THE DEAD TO DENY THAT IT WASN'T HE WHO ACTUALLY WAS KILLED?
IN YET ANOTHER CONFUSING REPORT, CECIL THE LION WAS ALREADY KILLED SOME TIME AGO.
WELL AT LEAST THE EMOTIONAL UPROAR BROUGHT THIS STORY FRONT AND CENTER AND THAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT.....THE KILLING OF WILD ANIMALS FOR SPORT, WHOEVER THEY MAY BE, IS JUST WRONG, ETHICALLY AND MORALLY.
ON ANOTHER FRONT, THE DONALD COMPARED HUNTING TO GOLF AND SAID HIS TWO SONS ERIC AND DONALD JR.
SHOWED BOTH SKILL AND BRAVERY FOR HUNTING IN THE WILD.
BUT THEN AGAIN, HE ALSO PRAISED SARAH PALIN, SO I'M NOT SURPRISED THAT HE WOULD EQUATE THE KILLING OF INNOCENT ANIMALS TO GOLF.
