Anderson Cooper 360 on Thursday, January 28, 2016

Anderson Cooper anchored AC360 from the Washington, DC bureau ahead of the RNC Debate.  Most of the program was spent talking about The Donald not attending the debate.  Brianna Keilar "interviewed" Trump on his plane and that was played toward the end of the hour.  We use the term "interviewed" loosely as while she pressed Trump for answers to legitimate questions, he didn't answer them and only talked about himself, how he won all the previous debates,,,,yadda yadda yadda!  Trump also had a version of a phone call he had with FOX News today that differed from a statement FOX News put out.  That statement was shown during the AC360 post debate wrap-up.

That's right, Anderson was back to moderate a two hour post debate wrap up.

A few photos of Anderson out and about in Washington, DC today were shared by fans on social media:

Yesterday I had a dooming prediction that Thursday's 360 would be entirely splashy coverage of the Anti-FOX-Debate-Trump-Helping-Some-Veterans-Somewhere Rally. And it was disturbingly close to that. The actual FOX debate and Trump's appearance at the rally were an hour later so 360 - the first hour - was only ramping up to it.

Anderson gave an overview of the Trump & debate situation and talked to Sunian Serfaty for the details. Anderson was on a stage with seven or ten panelists or pundits spread among two tables. Half of the screen was a live shot of the Trump rally, at this time (and for the entire first hour of 360) it was an empty stage, just a podium, flags and a Trump sign. It boggles my mind as to why they would have to keep showing the empty stage, giving it so much prime real estate on the screen. Even more distressing, Hayes showed the same scene on his screen for much of his show.

I went elsewhere in Television Land.

But I got back in time to see Peter Kauffmann and I'm so glad I did. Kauffmann is a former Navy officer and not a Trump fan. The on-screen title was "Veterans: Trump Using Us As 'Political Props" and Kauffmann explained why. Jeffrey Lord was there to defend Trump, which he did curiously, by dissing Hillary Clinton, '...she didn't going the military either...' Since I didn't see the very start I don't know if Trump's four student deferments to the draft were brought up by either Kauffmann, Lord or Anderson. Kauffmann agreed Hillary didn't join but she also didn't slam McCain for being a POW. I loved it when Kauffmann said of Trump, "... it seems like he's really scared of Megan Kelly..." and "...he's scared of revealing he has no depth..." Lord here didn't actually counter those statements but babbled about the lack of a military background of other GOPers. Kauffmann had more to say about Trump "...using veterans as a PR stunt..." and mentioned an incident years ago of Trump kicking veterans off his property, something to do with t-shirt sales. This was probably the only segment worth watching.

Next was the promised Trump interview on an airplane; didn't watch. Kudos to ATA for labeling it an "interview" with quotations and pointing out Trump didn't answer the questions. But I'm sorry you had to watch it.

When I checked in later the interview was over but not the talking about it and showing clips from it, didn't watch

I did not watch the second hour. I did not watch Trump's speech. Tomorrow I will not watch reviews or clips of Trump's rally.

Votevets spokesperson Peter Kaufmann's blistering criticism of Trump and his phony embrace of veterans issues for political gain was the best part of the 360 GOP debate panel. He's not the sort of guest that AC360 will book often or maybe ever again. Too much truth-telling. I loved how he took on the disgusting Jeff Lord--Lord didn't need to be included in the interview in the first place. And furthermore, where were the Democrats on the panel? David Axelrod doesn't count because he wants to be considered neutral and non-partisan now. I'm sure 360 wouldn't have a Democratic panel discussion without tossing in a few Republicans.

MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell had a theory that by pulling out of the Fox debate and using Megyn Kelly as an excuse, Trump is actually trying to set up a precedent where he can skip debating the Democratic nominee should he become the GOP nominee in the general election campaign. O'Donnell said that Trump realizes he's a lousy debater who knows zero about policy and that he'd be easily destroyed and humiliated by Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders, so he's trying to figure out a way to get out of debating altogether if he's the nominee--the press has let him get away with nearly everything so far so he could probably get what he wants and they'd just call him a 'genius' even though he's nothing but an idiotic coward.

HUFFPOST IS REPORTING THAT MEGYN KELLY WAS THE WINNER OF LAST NIGHT'S DEBATE. PERSONALLY I'M GLAD
THAT FOX DIDN'T GIVE IN TO TRUMP AND HAVE HER REMOVED. HE SAID HE NEVER ASKED FOR THAT. REALLY?
I AM BEGINNING TO THINK THAT IF THE GOP RAN BOZO THE CLOWN IN TRUMP'S PLACE, TRUMP'S FOLLOWING WOULD IN FACT, GATHER TRUMP'S SUPPORTERS. WHY? BECAUSE HE SAYS NOTHING AND HAS NO PLAN EXCEPT "MAKING
AMERICA GREAT AGAIN." BOZO WOULD SAY THE SAME THING. BOZO HAS NO PLAN EITHER AND LIKES TO HEAR HIMSELF SPEAK. HE TOO COULD SMILE AND SHAKE HANDS WITH THE MASSES AND THEN ASK HIS ENTOURAGE FOR
A HAND TOWEL TO CLEANSE HIS HANDS. BOZO WOULD WEAR WHITE GLOVES TO BE DISPOSED OF AFTER EACH EVENT.
TRUMP HASN'T THOUGHT OF THIS YET. GIVE HIM TIME.
AND IS IT ME OR DOES TED CRUZ HAVE THE KIND OF FACE YOU'D LIKE TO SMACK? I KNOW YOU CAN'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER, BUT IN HIS CASE YOU CAN.
@ARIES MOON: THANKS FOR THE COMPLIMENT....YOUR COMMENTS ARE ALWAYS SPOT ON AS WELL.

@ARIES MOON: THAT'S A GOOD THEORY AND TRUMP IS A GAME PLAYER SO HE COULD BE RIGHT.
BERNIE SANDERS WOULDN'T ALLOW TRUMP TO GET AWAY WITH IT, BUT SOMETHING TELLS ME, HILLARY WOULD.
HILLARY WOULD TROUNCE TRUMP ON POLICIES, BOTH DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN.
