Anderson Cooper 360 on Wednesday, January 27, 2016

Anderson Cooper was back in the AC360 anchor chair in NYC for the for an expanded two hour edition of AC360.  There was much coverage of The Donald's decision to not participate in the RNC debate tomorrow night and his dust up with FOX and Megan Kelly.  As a reminder to what brought us to this point here's a clip of Kelly questioning Trump during the first RNC debate on FOX and Trump's push back because she dared to quote some of his previous offensive remarks.:

Since one of  the quotes mentioned was remarks The Donald make about Rosie O'Donnell we decided to take a look back to when Anderson/AC360 covered the feud between O'Donnell and Trump.  Since Trump is now ratings gold, our favorite newsman has to be a little more serious with his coverage, but it seems like little has changed with The Donald in the last 9 years!  Grab your popcorn and Coke and enjoy!

This clip aired December 20, 2006 as "The Shot" and was the beginning of Anderson's coverage of the "feud" and left Anderson "completely verklempt" ~

It's now Day Two of coverage (these clips aired December 21, 2006) and Anderson starts by bringing us up-to-date, while munching on popcorn and drinking a Coke ~

video

In a second segment that night, Jeff Toobin and Lisa Bloom are in the studio to discuss the potential legal angles with Cooper ~

After a Christmas cease-fire, the feud started up again and Anderson covered it on AC360 (these videos aired December 28, 2006), where he brought viewers up-to-date and then played an extended interview he had with Trump.  ~

The feud didn't seem to end with 2006; this clip originally aired January 3. 2007 ~

Hope you finished your popcorn, because that's all we have on the Rosie/Trump feud for now!

At the end of the second hour AC360 aired an interview Anderson did with Matthew Trevithick who was imprisoned in Iran for 41 days.  He was recently released and is now back home

I was a minute and a half late and barely; watched the first three segments. Too much Trump. He announced yesterday he won't be participating in the FOX debate and instead would hold a rally/fundraiser for a veteran's group. And again today it was three segments, two more than what was needed. I predict on Thursday CNN will have big splashy coverage of that rally. I hope the veteran's fundraiser is for a legitimate charity and not for the cheesy one-man 'charity' Trump was involved in last time (that event on the U.S.S. Intrepid. (The Wounded Warriors Project is in trouble nowadays for spending too much of the donations on themselves and not enugh on veterans.)

When I tuned in Anderson was talking to Jim Acosta(?). And then a panel of John King, Gloria Borger and another guy. Not interested in Trump's hissy fit, didn't stay.

The next topic had a different panel but the same topic. Even Donna Brazile in the panel couldn't make me watch.

Cruz has challenged Trump to a one-on-one debate. Good for him but felt like it's all for show, like he made the challenge knowing full well Trump would never agree to it. I didn't watch the John King and Rick Tyler panel.

Randi Kaye had an interesting report. Anderson started the segment with a few figures on how much candidates are spending; is it really paying off? Kaye's report was from an Iowa diner, she asked regular Iowa folk if they knew the candidates by their faces. She showed them photos on an iPad and the answers were amusing. My sympathies to Marco Rubio.

The standoff/militant takeover of a federal bird sanctuary in Oregon is coming to a close. Arrests have been made, one guy was shot and the leader is calling for everybody to go home. Dan Simon reported from Oregon.

360 had a good report on Flint MI and the poisoned water supply. Anderson gave an overview, naming Gov. Rick Snyder, showing a clip from Sanjay Gupta's report, and stating the Gov apologized. What was curious about this segment was the timing. Usually during a two-hour 360 there is a commercial break at the end of the first hour, at about :57 into the show and then the second hour starts right at 9:00 EST. However, today the Flint water segment started at :57 and the long clip from Poppy Harlow's interview with Gov. Snyder continued until several minutes into the second hour. A curious coincidence since it overlapped the beginning of MSNBC's Maddow's special Town Hall in Flint.

I watched Maddow instead of 360's second hour.

Thanks, ATA, for the old clips from the Trump/Rosie O'Donnell feud. Always good to see Anderson at his snarkiest best especially when it's directed at Trump. Sadly, Trump might still be "ratings gold" with too many people but a lot of the people I know are fed up with the excessive Trump coverage. Slowly there have been a few articles about the small, but growing, number of people who hate the gobs and gobs of Trump coverage every day. Nonetheless I am interested in how Trump will do in the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries. The results will be a big clue to whether news programs will continue to be free advertising for Trump.

AC said that part of Trump's 'genius' in backing out of the Fox debate is that he will be the headline and everyone will be talking about HIM--but when are they NOT talking about him or allowing him to dominate coverage? The reports on Trump were too fawning and went too easy on him--Trump is scared stiff to face Megyn Kelly but AC and some of the pundits tried to spin it as Trump displaying 'strength'--would they say the same about Hillary or Bernie if they were to pull this type of thing? Doubt it. Ana Navarro naturally had to get a dig in at POTUS by saying Trumps bluster is a reaction to the country's supposed anger with the president's 'weakness'. I don't recall President Obama ever backing out of a debate. Trump is a loudmouthed wimp with idiotic, racist supporters who believe everything he says. CNN.com had a report on Trump supporters and the reasons they back him--not surprisingly, their main motivation was hatred of President Obama and the minorities that they feel are 'overtaking' the country--in other words, these people are nothing but racist trash. I don't expect AC360 would ever be honest and report that.

360's political reports have this pattern of practically praising Trump, slamming Hillary Clinton and ignoring Bernie Sanders. The report on Hillary Clinton was nothing but a hit piece questioning her 'trustworthiness' and her judgment (because she chose to stay with her husband after Lewinsky, etc.) Where are the reports on whether or not the public trusts Trump or the rest of the GOP candidates?

Gov. Snyder needs to be thrown in jail and his entire administration tossed out of office. No excuses, he and his administration are the sole culprits of the lead water poisoning in Flint and should be held accountable for the harm they have done.

WHILE SOME MAY FIND TRUMPS FEUD WITH ROSIE O'DONNELL AMUSING, IT IS NOT AMUSING TO THINK THAT THIS
PERSONALITY, MAY IN FACT, BECOME THE LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD BECAUSE HE WANTS TO CALL ALL THE SHOTS, AND THE MEDIA, AND THAT INCLUDES AC, IS GIVING HIM A FREE PASS.
IN AN INTERVIEW WITH CNN'S BRIANA KEELER, TRUMP SAID HE HAD TO STAND UP FOR HIMSELF, TRANSLATION: "I'M SHOWING YOU YOU CAN'T PUSH ME AROUND AND TELL ME WHAT I CAN AND CANNOT DO." THAT IS NOT REALITY.
BEING PRESIDENT IS MAKING JUDGMENT CALLS THAT EFFECT US ALL, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOU MUST HAVE
A KEEN SENSE OF MORALITY AND KNOW RIGHT FROM WRONG. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO WIN EVERY NEGOTIATION AND IT
ISN'T "THE ART OF THE DEAL." WE ARE SPEAKING ABOUT REAL LIFE AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF FUTURE FAILED DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN POLICIES.
IT HAS BECOME OBVIOUS THAT DONALD TRUMP CAN'T STAND THE HEAT.
IF YOU CAN'T STAND THE HEAT, NOW IS THE TIME TO GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN BEFORE YOU BURN DOWN THE
ENTIRE HOUSE.
SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN, WHO I DISLIKE, SAID PRACTICALLY THE SAME THING TO WOLF BLITZER, YESTERDAY
WHEN ASKED WHAT HE THOUGHT OF TRUMP PULLING OUT OF THE GOP DEBATE. TRUMP PURPOSELY STARTED THE ARGUMENT WITH FOX NEWS AND THEREFORE PROMOTED HIMSELF, TO HAVE EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT, HIS FAVORITE TOPIC, HIMSELF, DEFLECTING HIS ABUNDANT IGNORANCE ON NATIONAL ISSUES. THAT IS PURE SELFISHNESS AND IT CAN'T BE TOLERATED.
DONALD TRUMP IS NOT READY TO BE PRESIDENT AND WE ARE NOT READY TO BECOME THE VICTIMS OF HIS EGOCENTRIC, NEGLIGENCE. HE IS AN OUT OF CONTROL OPPORTUNIST!

ACCORDING TO HUFFPOST, BEN CARSON GAVE SOME "PRETTY WEIRD ANSWERS" TO THE QUESTIONS POSED
TO HIM DURING FOX'S GOP DEBATE. WHY IS THAT A SURPRISE? BEN CAME AS PROMISED. IF HE GAVE SENSIBLE
ANSWERS HE WOULDN'T HAVE COME AS HIMSELF. LOGIC WAS NEVER HIS SPECIALTY.

@anon 10:03, excellent post--I wish this is what could hear on 360 and other news programs that are so enamored with Trump that they miss what's REALLY important and why he should never be POTUS.
