Anderson Cooper on Tuesday, January 5th, 2016

Anderson Cooper anchored an expanded two hour edition of AC360 from the NYC studio.  One would think with President Obama's news conference on gun safety and the executive actions he took today that would have been the lead story on AC360, but apparently Trump uttered a few words today so that was the lead story.   To make matters worse, AC360 included Dana Loesch on the panel discussion of President Obama's news conference.   Would be interesting to know how Anderson was granted the Town Hall with President Obama on Thursday given the scant and negative coverage President Obama receives on AC360.   Unfortunately, we found nothing clip worthy in the two hours.

Here are a couple more highlights (?) from the first hour of Anderson's New Year's Eve coverage:

Anderson didn't wear his glasses for Tuesday's 360. Contact lenses maybe? Or perhaps the type size of the teleprompter was made bigger.

As ATA posted, Trump was the lead story even though President Obama presented his executive orders today on more background checks for gun purchases. It's a big deal. Trump jabbering is not. HIs new topic is Cruz's "citizenship" and Canadian birth. I switched to Hayes who did have Obama and gun control as the lead. When I checked back on 360 there was a panel which included Jeffrey Lord so I went back to Hayes.

I got back to 360 during Anderson's Q&A with Jim Acosta about Obama's gun control plan. Then it was a panel with Van Jones (pro-more gun control) and Dana Loesch (anti-anything Obama does). Jones made some good points but my favorite part of the panel was when Loesch, after interrupting Jones too many times, was politely told to shut up by Anderson.
At the end of the segment Anderson promoted CNN's Town Hall with Obama on gun control airing this Thursday. Why is Anderson getting this plum assignment? I think it's because CNN is still seen as the safe middle ground politically and Anderson is CNN's primetime star. Although his coverage of Obama topics is not great, he did shush Loesch.

Next up was a segment on the presidential campaign and attack ads. I was ready to change the channel but fortunately candidates other than Trump were covered both in the montage of political commercials and in the discussion with David Axelrod. Oddly enough, when Axelrod strongly implied Trump and his comments haven't been justly vetted or criticized by the media that's when Anderson ended the discussion.

Sara Sidner is still covering the standoff in Oregon at the national wildlife refuge. Apparently the FBI have warrents for their arrests, the community doesn't want them there and even the Hammond family (the arrests which sparked this "rebellion") are keeping their distance from the militants/protesters. I don't get why the feds won't just cut off the electricity, barricade the roads in and out. Let those guys stay to starve and freeze or let them come out to be properly arrested, jailed, fined or whatever the feds want to do.
Also in this segment was a Dan Simon report "Lessons Learned in the Waco Siege".

Last in the first hour was a report on Ethan "Affluenza" Couch and his mom. Anderson covered what their situation is now and had a good talk with Dr. Drew Pinsky and Mark O'Mara about the two.

At the very end of the first hour Anderson previewed what was coming up next at the start of the second hour. It'll be a report on Trump blathering about Cruz's birthplace and questioning Cruz's "citizenship". Same old thing that started the first hour. Who watched it the second time?

There was no way Trump coverage should've been the lead story on 360 on a day when President Obama's announcement of his proposals for curbing gun violence. I'm also not sure how or why 360 managed to snag President Obama for the town hall on guns either--the President has said that he doesn't care to watch cable news, so maybe he's not aware of how AC360's coverage of him is practically nil and mostly negative when they do bother to report on him. I noticed that even Rachel Maddow led with Trump and that was surprising--her report on how the scary Trump phenomena is not new and is reminiscent of segregationist George Wallace's campaign in 1968 was a good one and worth watching however. The presence on 360 of the ghoulish Jeff Lord and the repulsive Dana Loesch were excellent reasons to switch over to MSNBC on Tuesday (who let the rabid Loesch back on 360?). I totally agree with the anonymous commentor on Monday's post who called Republicans a "despicable lot of losers", perfectly stated. The gun sales background check proposal the president has put forward contains all of the provisions Republicans have demanded from him but in spite of that, they are still vowing to fight him tooth and nail on this. HORRIBLE people, bought and sold by the NRA (and that includes some Dems in congress as well).

On another note, AC's buddy Andy Cohen has a show on Bravo called Then and Now that I watched a couple of times over the holidays. On one episode, there was a good segment on the election of George W. Bush in 2000 which led into a discussion on voter suppression and how many citizens are being systematically denied their right to vote by laws put in place by Republicans and how their exclusion will fundamentally affect this election and others to come. It's ironic that Andy Cohen, who is not a journalist, did more reporting on voter suppression in that one segment than AC360 EVER has and for that he gets a big bravo from me.

I WATCHED 360 FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DECADES, THOUGH I DO PEEK IN AT CNN DURING THE DAY AND WILL
WATCH ATTENTIVELY TOMORROW WHEN AC INTERVIEWS THE PRESIDENT.
THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME AC HAS INTERVIEWED OBAMA. HE DID AN EXTENSIVE INTERVIEW DURING OBAMA'S
FIRST TERM, WHEN THEY WERE IN AFRICA....I THINK, AND HE WAS THE ONLY JOURNALIST TO DO SO.
HE ALSO INTERVIEWED HIM IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND SAID IT WAS VERY WARM. IT WAS DURING THE WINTER,
MAYBE IN O9.
AT ANY RATE IT IS WORTH WATCHING AND LISTENING.
AS FOR OUR FRIEND "THE DONALD," THE NY TIMES HAD A GOOD ARTICLE ON THE DEATH OF HIS BROTHER, ALSO
IN DEPTH, AND THEY DESCRIBED TRUMP AS "PENSIVE." WELL THAT'S A CHANGE.
SOMETHING TELLS ME WIFEY, MELANIA, THERESA NAMED HER DAUGHTER AFTER HER, BRAVO'S THERESA FROM NJ. (MELANIA SHOULD
BE HONORED). I DIGRESS, WILL BE KEPT FAR FROM PUBLIC VIEW, SHOULD TRUMP GET THE NOMINATION.
FIRST SHE WASN'T BORN IN THE UNITED STATES, NOT THAT SHE HAD TO BE, BUT SHE KNOWS LESS THAN HE DOES ABOUT POLICY AND GOVERNMENT, AND IS CERTAINLY NOT AN INTELLECTUAL. BUT IVANKA IS ANOTHER STORY. SHE IS GOING TO BE FIRST DAUGHTER LIKE YOU NEVER SAW...EVEN ON THE SHOW, YOU COULD TELL SHE HAD HIS "SMARTS." AND SHE IS JUST READY, AND WAITING IN THE WINGS AND IS ON HER THIRD PREGNANCY LADIES. THE POST INTERVIEWED HER AND SHE PROUDLY DISPLAYED HER "BABY BUMP." OH MY...LET'S
SPREAD THAT TRUMP WEALTH!
