Anderson Cooper 360 on Wednesday, March 23, 2016

The very capable John Berman was in the AC360 anchor chair for an expanded two hour edition of AC360.  Anderson found time this morning to tweet the above photo promoting his new book and SXM Radio Andy posted the following to Twitter promoting Part 2 of On The Road With Andy and Anderson on Monday for those with SXM Radio.

Anderson certainly is entitled to time-off but like Anonymous 3:47 yesterday, I had the idea he'd go to Brussels. When I saw John Berman on 360 I figured 'he's on his way, some kind of delay somewhere along the line'. Hayes is there. To repeat, Anderson can take a vacation day whenever he wants. But I'd be disappointed if he decided to go on a book tour instead of going to Belgium.

Berman covered the Brussels terror attacks for most of the first hour. Here's what I saw:

- talking with Pamela Brown and then Clarissa Ward about the attack, the suspects, the possibilitiy of more attacks soon in Europe or the U.S., terror networks and the investigation. There was also video of the Brussels airport very shortly after the bomb blast.
- panel with Paul Cruickshank, Juliette Kayyem and Robert Baer discussing the same topics but going further indepth regarding the arrest of Abdeslam last week as a contributing factor.
-the manhunt, Muslim neighborhoods and Muslim extremism during a Q&A with Nima Elbagir and a Brian Todd report focusing on bomb/explosion technology.
- the U.S. State Dept travel warning for Europe, a talk with Elise Elise Labatt about the attack, security, ISIS and intelligence reports. Berman also had a piece profiling (mostly) American victims who have died or are missing.
- Trump and Cruz sniping about each other's wives, Sunian Serfaty with the details, yada yada yada.

Anyone know if Anderson is anchoring on Thursday and from where?

Sadly AC isn't going to cover the Brussels attacks. To be fair he's been really busy with political coverage the last few months so I understand that he needs to take a vacation.

However his overall coverage seems to be lacking lately and the thing that's bothered me the most is that he no longer travels for stories. I know it's not safe for press to travel at this moment, however CNN sent that female reporter in Syria to cover the destruction happening there. It would be harder for AC to be in the middle East because he is noticeable. But Brussel? Erin Burnett is there, she went there straight from Cuba, and let's not forget the fact that she has small children at home. AC doesn't have that excuse, sorry but it pisses me off at this point.

AC used to be the "It" Reporter in breaking stories for CNN but something has changed. Since 2011 he started cutting back traveling for CNN and now its basically non existent. AC is far more interesting out on the field, I don't think covering day to day sound bites from the campaign trail is his thing. Blitzer is far better at it. It seems AC does do casual things for CNN, nothing noteworthy or significant. He is probably fine with that at this point. With so many millions over the years, 60 mins, books, real estate, a long term partner, AC 2 shows... the show just seems to be an obligation at this point. No real passion or feeling in it. I notice the show doesn't even cover gay issues anymore or cnn rarely does period. One group or topic CNN will defend is Muslims. Anytime Muslims are questioned or under siege after a terrorist attack, they have their anchors and pundits push back HARD. Anyone else notice how defensive the anchors are about Islam?

I have to respectively disagree in a nice way when people say Anderson doesn't go out in the field any longer. How many mass shootings all over the United States has he been to recently? He just was overseas last November for the Paris mass attack. He even rescheduled one of his AC2 shows when something had a happened.

Seeing how nobody seems to know where he is at, it might be a vacation or could be a 60 minutes piece.

It was announced yesterday that on Tuesday he will do the Republican town hall meeting. He seems to be the go to person for those. He is more active in politics than he use to be. He does all the panels on primary coverage and Wolf just stands there and gives the results

Thank you

Yeah but CNN pretty much sent everyone to Paris, except for Don of course. AC used to spend weeks in the field, and it was usually overseas.

He's been traveling alot nationally for the political coverage, but that happens every election. I guess CNN views AC as being one of the better anchors at covering politics.

It may just be the election season, but either way his coverage has been lacking for almost a year.

If this happened in 2005-2009 AC would have been on first plane to Brussels. In 2010 he was first reporter on the ground. Now he may have more things going on now but its still clear to see. He always went to dangerous places, he always went overseas, Africa, middle east, South America, Asia. And I disagree he is not very good in covering politics he seems listless and like he is just doing it out of obligation. He needs to be on the field or do stories he's passionate about. Zucker is not allowing it. AC has been reduced to a teleprompter, sit down news personality. Long time fans clearly see a change in AC and CNN.

ANDERSON CAN CHOOSE WHATEVER ASSIGNMENT HE WANTS AND HE HAS, OVER THE YEARS, EARNED THAT RIGHT.
SOMETHING TELLS ME, HE'D RATHER STAY IN NYC RATHER THAN TRAVEL THE GLOBE. EVEN THE URGE TO TRAVEL
TO HOT SPOTS SUBSIDES WHEN YOU GET TO A CERTAIN PLACE IN LIFE.
I DON'T PARTICULARLY CARE FOR HIS OWN SLANT ON THE GOP RACE. IF YOU CAN'T BE OBJECTIVE THAN IT IS
TIME TO DO SOMETHING ELSE, BUT THE MONEY IS TOO GOOD TO PASS UP.
JOHN BERMAN DID AN EXCELLENT JOB THE LAST TWO NIGHTS IN HIS REPORTS FROM BRUSSELS AND ERIN BURNETT
HAS BECOME MUCH BETTER OVER THE LONG HAUL.

*maybe* Anderson is choosing not to travel to breaking news and potentially be away from New York for long periods of time. (he does do the short trips with Andy Cohen for AC2Live) Maybe he wants to stay close to NY area as his mother (who he is very close to) is 92 years old... maybe he wants to spend as much time as he can with her now? I don't blame or fault him for choosing to stay as close to home as feels comfortable with.
