Anderson Cooper 360 on Wednesday, April 20, 2016

Anderson Cooper anchored an expanded two hour edition of AC360 from the NYC studio.  The program was mostly a rehash of last night's NY primary and what the results mean going forward.  Also covered in the second hour was a segment on the charges in the Flint Water Crisis, the flooding in Houston and Anderson did a report on Harriett Tubman coming to the $20 bill!

From PageSix yesterday:

Anderson Cooper up for Michael Strahan’s ‘Live’ seat

After ABC News President James Goldston announced in a memo Tuesday that former New York Giants star Michael Strahan would exit “Live With Kelly and Michael” to move full-time to “Good Morning America,” speculation immediately began over who will take his role.

Sources told Page Six on Tuesday that Ripa’s close pal Anderson Cooper is now the front-runner to replace Strahan, who came on as co-host with Kelly Ripa in 2012 after Regis Philbin retired in 2011. The show had tried out a string of guest hosts at the time including Cooper, Seth Meyers, Neil Patrick Harris, Ripa’s husband Mark Consuelos and Jeff Probst.

Sources added on Tuesday that Ripa’s other BFF, Bravo’s Andy Cohen, was among those who also want the gig and “The phones were already ringing . . . every agent out there wants to get their client a shot at that seat.”

Cooper’s contract situation at CNN puts him in a prime position to take over. In 2011, “Anderson had just signed a deal to do his own daytime show,” ruling him out of the “Live” job, an insider said. His syndicated show ran till 2013, “so he has experience doing daily daytime.” Cooper’s CNN contract reportedly ends after the election.

But an ABC source said that “Live With Kelly and Michael” will look to replace Strahan “in the fall with the start of the new season. They had a lot of fun with it last time . . . It took about 10 months before they settled on Michael.” Strahan will leave over the summer.

Ripa reportedly was “blindsided” by Strahan’s departure. The network source told us, “The plan was for there to be more time between telling Kelly and the announcement. But the story leaked, the timeline got crunched.”

A different TV pro explained Ripa was keeping the troops together behind the scenes after the surprise announcement: “She was on for a long time before he showed up. He thought he was the strength of the show.” Yet another insider said Ripa “is the queen bee of the show, always has been.” More reason she might replace Strahan with a close pal. Reps didn’t comment.

If you are in the greater NYC area, Anderson tweeted about a couple of book signings this Sunday:

Wednesday I watched the first hour of 360 and then checked in a few times during Maddow's commercial breaks. Here's what was covered in 360's first hour:

- at the very start, split-screen showing both Trump rally and Hillary Clinton rally but the segment was on Trump. Anderson talked to Jim Acosta at the Maryland Trump rally before getting to the panel of Moniki Korst, Christine Quinn (a Hillary supporter!),. Peter Beinart, Dana Bash, Kaleith McEnany, Tara Setmayer and Matt Lewis. The discussion was Trump NY win, the convention, RNC rules, Cruz and more Trump.

- Joe Johns reported from the Hillary rally in Philadelphia, John King 'By the Numbers' on the delegate count for both the GOP and Dem sides and the panel again. While they were talking about Hillary and Sanders, most of the time the video in the big box on the screen was Trump; in the middle there was Hillary for a short bit before quickly going back to showing Trump. Was Trump simply out of camera range for a few seconds and that's why viewers got to see Hillary instead?

- Anderson "...spoke a short time ago..." to Dan Spicer of the RNC about RNC rules. The interview was shown with the LIVE icon on, probably the entire time, I don't know. Instead I watched Hayes cover the Flint water disaster charges story.

- Trump vs. Cruz segment. I watched Hayes cover the Harriet Tubman on the $20 story.

- more rain, flooding and deaths in Houston reported by Ed Lavendera.

The start of the second hour made it look like there'd be nothing but Trump Trump Trump again. Absolutely no clue Anderson would cover Flint and Tubman much later in the second hour. I wonder what Anderson, Zucker and the rest of the CNN pinheads think when 360 is a two-hour program. Do they think most viewers watch both hours? Or just one or the other hour? If 360 was one hour would Flint and Tubman had been squeezed in or left on the cutting room floor so more time could be devoted to Trump?

I do not want Anderson to host 'Kelly and Whoever'. Although 360 needs to stop slobbering over Trump, I think it can improve and be the terrific news program it used to be. Anderson should stick with CNN. Back when he had 360 and his daytime show he couldn't give enough attention to both. Just my opinion. Maybe Anderson would rather do happy celebrity chats and cooking segments daytime show than 360. It's also my opinion that Anderson hates giving Trump the spotlight but executive pinheads like Zucker insist upon it and force Anderson to wait until the last 20 minutes of a two-hour show to cover other news.

Sick of the Trump overload, but that's not going away for a long time to come, so I get my kicks from watching Trumpette Kayleigh McEnany getting hammered by 360's political panel as she tries to defend Trump at all costs. I'm sick of the media treating Trump as though he were an ordinary candidate instead of one who STILL thinks retweeting white supremicists is perfectly acceptable--can't rely on the press to report the fact that we now have an actual racist running for president--hopefully Hillary will have lots to say about that when she's the nominee.

I might be mistaken, but it's been a while since AC did a voiceover report on 360--I was totally taken aback that they even covered the Harriet Tubman/$20 bill story and that AC narrated--seems like that only happens on 60 Minutes nowadays. The clips of 'Hamilton' in the piece sure made me want to see it but it would probably take a century to get a ticket for it.

If AC becomes the co-host on Live, I won't have a problem with it--360 didn't exactly improve after AC's talk show went off the air and I don't think much will change if he does take the job.

AC's contract with CNN is ending too. What if he goes with 60 minutes and Live? It's just a theory, he'll probably stick with CNN

THE OBVIOUS CHOICE IS NEVER THE ONE THAT IS PICKED AND ANDERSON WILL STICK WITH CNN NO MATTER.
CNN CAN BE COUNTED ON FOR A VERY HIGH PAY CHECK AND ABC DIDN'T WANT ANDERSON IN THE FIRST PLACE.
KELLY WANTED ANDERSON, AND SOMETHING TELLS ME, KELLY ISN'T HAPPY WITH THE WAY SHE'S BEING TREATED
AT ABC. PAGE 6 TODAY REPORTED THAT SHE CALLED IN SICK FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK BECAUSE SHE WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF MICHAEL'S DEPARTURE. SHE IS ANGRY THAT GMA IS BEING GIVEN PRIORITY OVER KELLY LIVE.
ABC HAS THEIR EYES ON ERIN, THAT'S DWTS ERIN, FOR A REPLACEMENT AND SO IT GOES. ABC WILL GO WITH
SOMEONE YOUNGER THAN ANDERSON. IF IT'S NOT RATINGS IT'S DEMOGRAPHICS. AT CNN ANDERSON IS YOUTHFUL.
IN DAYTIME PRIME, ENTIRELY DIFFERENT STORY.

NOW IF I STILL LIVED IN NJ, WHICH I DO NOT ANYMORE, I COULD HAVE CAUGHT AC FOR THE BOOK SIGNING
IN RIDGEWOOD. LIVED VERY NEAR THERE, BUT TAXES ARE BEYOND HIGH.
THAT SAME BOOK STORE FEATURED HILLARY WHEN SHE WROTE, "IT TAKES A VILLAGE."
THEY'RE VERY GOOD AT GETTING THE BEST SPEAKERS BUT PARKING IS A HORROR.
