Anderson Cooper 360 on Wednesday, April 27th, 2016

Anderson Cooper anchored an expanded two hour edition of AC360 from the NYC studio.  Much of the two hours was spent on The Donald.   A couple of segments caught our attention and not necessarily for good reasons.  The first was with David Gergen and Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling (Ret.) discussing The Donald's foreign policy speech today.  We once looked forward to the wise counsel of Gergen, but now he seems totally in Trump's corner and never misses a chance to take a swing at President Obama.  Thankfully, Hertling was on to point out the at times incoherent rambling the The Donald touted as a foreign policy speech.

Next up was a segment on Trump accusing Hillary Clinton on playing "The Woman Card" and AC360 had on Trump supporter Clueless Kayleigh who just makes us do a head desk.  And as per usual, Anderson gave her the last word.

In the second hour there was a panel on the path for Clinton and Trump after last night and Christine Quinn was brought in and she gave Clueless Kayleigh push back on "The Woman Card."

The program ended with a story on the sentencing of Former Speaker of The House, Dennis Hastert today.  This was the lead story on NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, but was given 4 minutes and 24 seconds on a two hour AC360 and Anderson complained about the story being swept under the rug.   This has been in the news for over a year and there has been a lot of coverage in the Chicago media across many platforms for the last month.  If CNN could pull their eyes away from Trump's every move and covering his every sneeze, perhaps Anderson wouldn't be surprised by the story?  Here's the segment that was obviously taped earlier in the day as Anderson is wearing a different tie when speaking to Jeff Toobin.

Not thrilled with Wednesday's 'Almost All Trump Show'. Here's what was in the first hour:

- Trump's foreign policy speech ("America First" a la Lindbergh, thanks to Maddow for that reference), Anderson talked to a reporter for the details. Cruz picked Florino as his running mate and it's discussed by a panel of Gloria Borger, Errol Lewis, Patrick Healy, Kaleigh McEnany, Tara Setmayer and Margaret Hoover, McEnany perfectly parroted Trump's comment that it's "an act of desperation" while others talked about Cruz's strategy for doing this now.

- Trump's foreign policy speech as interpreted by David Gergen and Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling. I thought it was fantastic to have these two discuss Trump's speech and not the usual panel which I imagine would have been a lot of McEnany saying "America First! Squawk! America First! Squaaawwk!"
Thanks, ATA, for posting this segment because I was distracted for most of it during 360's broadcast. Trump has a "secret plan" for taking care of ISIS? Didn't we hear McCain say the same thing about bin Laden? Loved Hertling's comments, we need more of his kind of analysis. Gergen wasn't as pro-Trump as some other 360 pundits I could name ("SQUAWK!") but Hertling had all the smarter more knowledgeable answers due to his military background.

- Trump's comment on Hillary Clinton playing the "woman card", clip of Hillary's response and then Trump's response to that (this the now famous clip of Mrs. Christie - wife of NJ Gov - and her expressions as Trump was ranting about Hillary, Hayes had some great snarky comments and I bet Anderson would have had some too if he could have been allowed to express them). And a panel of all women - Borger, McEnany, Hoover, Setmayor and, amazingly, Jennifer Granholm (who should be on more often). The first time McEnany spoke up I checked out Hayes and stayed there because he was covering the prison sentence of former House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) on sexual abuse of minors charges. Because I didn't think Anderson would report on this story.
I watched this segment on ATA. McEnany squawked, Borger tried to correct her about "victimhood", hated when Anderson cut off Setmayer's great points twice and, as ATA pointed out, McEnany getting the last word.

- The Bernie Sanders campaign paneled by Borger, Lewis, Michael Nutter and Monika Konst.

- Gary Tuchman report on threats made against Indiana's GOP delegates by people who don't like who the delegates are supporting.

Anderson previewed the start of the second hour, a look at the "showdown" between Trump and Hillary Clinton. I watched Maddow.

The ATA video from the second segment with Christine Quinn, yet another pundit who should be on more often instead of delusional squawkers like McEnany. If you don't have time for the whole video, go to 5:45. That's when Quinn says Trump should experience for one day what it's like to be a woman in this country and McEnany said "We are equal with men..." Quinn immediately shot back "ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?" and told her some facts. Bird-brain McEnany didn't get it and squawked more GOP spin.

Also from the second segment, apparently tacked on very last, was the segment on Dennis Hastert. It was pretty good; why was it placed last?

Hayes, in one hour, managed to cover the result of yesterday's primaries, Trump's foreign policy speech, Trump's "woman card" remark, Bernie Sander, Dennis Hastert and recent "Block the Vote" news.

All of the moments on 360 that ATA has highlighted also stood out to me. David Gergen has made statements in the past about how 'weak' President Obama's foreign policy approach comes off to many in the Republican party and that he needs to display more 'muscularity' in order to intimidate our enemies and reassure the American people that they are safe--so it was irritating but not totally surprising that Gergen would have some complimentary comments on Trump's nonsensical 'foreign policy' speech and find something negative to say about POTUS. Gen. Mark Hertling wasn't having any of it and basically said that Trump's plans are senseless and dangerous. Imagine the reaction from the press and pundits like Gergen if Hillary or candidate Obama had presented a speech as outrageously ignorant as Trump's--they'd be vilified. Trump gets a pass from allegedly sensible political commentators like Gergen.

Carly Fiorina was a lousy businesswoman and a lousy presidential candidate--now she's stumping for an even lousier candidate. It's always funny to watch the GOP praise Carly and talk about how strong she is when she's basically mediocre at best. Hillary would destroy her and Ted easily, even without a running mate.

One of the best moments on 360 was when Christine Quinn said what many of us wanted to say to Trumpette Kayleigh McEnany--"are you out of your mind?!" I think we all know the answer to that by now...

Anderson showed some rare emotion and anger when he covered the Dennis Hastert case--perfectly understandable but Rachel Maddow had been reporting on Hastert for quite a while and she also said thought it was astounding that there wasn't as much national coverage on it--the Trump factor at play again of course. Hastert is a sick predator and 15 months behind bars is nowhere near enough punishment for the harm he's done to his victims.

DON'T UNDERSTAND CRUZ'S THINKING. HE DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH DELEGATES GOING FORWARD TO WIN THE NOMINATION AND HE'S NOT LIKABLE, SO WHY PICK CARLY FIORINA? IS THAT TO GET EVEN WITH HILLARY OR
TO SHOW TRUMP HE'S STILL IN IT TO WIN IT??
IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE AND CONFUSES MATTERS EVEN MORE.
UNFORTUNATELY IT DOES LOOK AS THOUGH TRUMP WILL BE THE REPUBLICAN NOMINEE AND FOR HIM TO SAY THAT
THE ONLY THING GOING FOR HILLARY IS THE FACT THAT "SHE IS A WOMAN," JUST SHOWS HIS IGNORANCE AND UTTER DISRESPECT FOR WOMEN IN GENERAL.
HILLARY HAPPENS TO BE THE MOST QUALIFIED, EVEN IF SHE DOES WALK HAND IN HAND WITH WALL STREET, LIKE
TRUMP DOESN'T? HOW DID HIS SKY SCRAPPERS GET BUILT, THROUGH OSMOSIS, OR BECAUSE HE'S A MAN??

Ted Cruz is bat sh!t crazy! The establishment puppet... yall would rather have this nutcase than Trump? Glad the voters are rejecting his nonsenical nonsense.... Cruz needs to drop out and go back to senate and read green, eggs and ham.... or go back to Canada... I loathe this creep. His attacks on trans people are just sickening and ignorant. Glad Trump is way more accepting of glbt folks.

TRUMP IS NOT A FAN OF GAY RIGHTS....PERIOD. I WATCHED THE APPRENTICE FOR YEARS AND HE HAD ONE
GAY PERSON AS A CONTESTANT THAT HE DID NOT CHOOSE. HIS PRODUCER PICKED HIM.
DON'T THINK FOR ONE MOMENT THAT TRUMP IS YOUR FRIEND. HE MAY HAVE TAKEN QUESTIONS FROM ANDERSON,
BUT THAT IS AS FAR AS HE WILL GO FOR ACCEPTING GAYS OR THEIR RIGHTS. IT'S ALL APPEARANCES.
