Anderson Cooper 360 on Monday, May 9, 2016

Anderson Cooper anchored an extended two hour edition of AC360 from CNN's Washington, DC Bureau.   Here's a taste of the political panel discussions.  We love us some Paul Begala, but apparently re-litigating the 1990s is part of Trump/The Republican Party's game plan and no one knows about/remembers The Donald's affair with Marla Maples while married to his first wife, Ivana.  It was all over the news and written about in depth in publications such as Vanity Fair, not just The Daily Mail, and Trump even wrote about his mistresses in his book!:

And yes, CNN/AC360 is complicit in letting Donald Trump control the conversation.  Anderson certainly remembered that Dennis Hastert was called a "serial child molester" by the judge, yet he's only spent a few minutes on that story and didn't even scratch the surface, much less educate viewers.   He's spent almost an hour tonight discussing Trump's comment about Hillary Clinton being an enabler of her husband's infidelity, completely ignoring Trump's statements on negotiating the national debt (not allowed by the U.S. Constitution) among other head scratching statements he made on the Sunday shows.

This is a rundown of what was on during the second hour of Monday's 360 (first hour was 'Gotham'). Before watching I thought of watching Maddow instead but chose Anderson because MSNBC is better than CNN at putting up most of a show's videos on their websites. As it turned out, I watched quite a bit of Maddow's show as it was broadcast because 360 had too much Trump.

I missed the first minute ('Gotham' usually goes a minute overtime) and got to 360 when a Jeff Zeleny report was in progress. The report focused on Trump attacking Hillary Clinton - focused on her husband's infidelity) and Hillary "not taking the bait" to attack back. Zeleny also mentioned the West Virginia primary and women voters. When Anderson was talking to Zeleny it bothered me when education was considered a "women's issue" and not a PARENT issue. John King's "By the Numbers" pointed out Trump's huge gender gap among women voters, his high unfavorable results among women and how primary voters differ from general election voters. The Panel of Too Many Pundits numbered 7 or 8, i lost count. Four spoke in this segment - Mary Katherine Ham, Matt Lewis, Ana Navarro and Harry Bennett - all on the infidelity issue and how women voters will react.

The panel continued in the next segment. Paul Begala, Kaleigh McEnany and Angela Rye got to speak. McEnany squawked something about a 12-year-old girl fantasizing about older men; I didn't really follow her word salad and I don't think Anderson did either. He asked her, "And your point is?" It boiled down to McEnany believing Trump was more sympathetic to victims of sexual abuse than Hillary. Anderson and none of the other panelists asked McEnany how that squared with Trump's declaration that women who seek abortions should be punished. At least Anderson asked McEnany if Trump had any affairs, she lied unconvincingly "I don't know." As ATA pointed out - Marla Maples! And who knows how many others?
In all of the babble about affairs and infidelity, I agreed with Navarro that there were better, more important issues to discuss. How about Trump waffling, even flip-flopping, on his tax plan remarks? 360 never covered that.

The start of the next segment was all about Trump, Paul Ryan and GOP unity. I watched Maddow cover North Carolina's LGBT bathroom law, the Dept. of Justice telling NC to stop it, Gov. McCrory saying no and Attorney General Loretta Lynch's excellent speech. I was hoping maybe Anderson had nice big coverage of this in his first segment with a report and a good talk with jeffrey Toobin and others...that didn't happen.

Then it was Trump and the evangelical vote segment. Back to Maddow who interviewed Sen. Amy Klobuchar (my 2nd fave senator!).

Last in the second hour was a segment combing reports on Oklahoma tornadoes and the Alberta Canada wildfires.

I've stated I wouldn't watch excessive Trump coverage and I did today because I kept hoping Anderson would bring up Trump's fiscal plans bugaroo and backflips. There was some of this on Blitzer's show, why not 360?

Paul Begala and Angela Rye didn't get nearly enough time to make their points about Trump--AC kept going to commercials only to return and focus on the GOP side of the panel--this was very irritating. Kayleigh McEnany sounded more ludicrous then ever with her attempts to try and smear Hillary Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky scandal--Kayleigh seems to forget that she works for a huge sexist, racist, ignorant buffoon who has a long history of bad behavior that makes anything Bill and Hillary did pale in comparison. Angela Rye and Anna Navarro had some choice words for Trumpette Kayleigh when she tried to pull that nonsense. Trump's polling numbers with women are already abysmal, digging up the Lewinsky scandal and blaming Hillary is not the smartest strategy in the world.

There was coverage of the Oklahoma tornado and the fire in Canada, but I would've also liked to have seen a report on Attorney General Loretta Lynch's powerful statement of support for the transgender community in North Carolina regarding the insulting and pointless bathroom law that has been put in place by the Republican Governor McCrory. I don't know why AC stopped covering stories that concern the LGBT community but it almost seems deliberate and makes no sense. So what if Brooke, Jake, Erin and Wolf may have reported on the same story, why shouldn't AC do it as well for his audience?

I feel like 360 is a bad rendition of Groundhog Day. It's the same thing said night after night and I'm to the point where even Paul Begala isn't enough to make me want to watch. On the plus side I now can get through a 2 hour 360 in about 7 minutes. It's official, I've lost my bliss.

Most of you ladies were around back in the day when I used to comment and watch 360. It's not the same program, hasn't been in years. Even during the bad days of Dave Doss and Klein I don't think it was as unwatchable as it is now. It's not just Trump coverage it's poor story selection all around and way too many panels and political talkers.

Anderson did push back on the blond when she was spouting unconfirmed facts about Hillary against the women Bill was involved in. I too have been around since the old days of Purple tie and others and I guess I hold out hope for Anderson

The panel last night was aweful, I turned it on for 20 minutes and changed the channel after that. I don't rmemebr the woman's name but she started going on about Beyonces album Lemonade (I have no idea what that had to do with the discussion) and then the one guy just kept saying the same thing over and over again.

Maybe it was just a bad night and they didn't have access to better people for the panel.... Or AC360 is just gone down the drain for good.

Oh also Jack Gray reappeared on Twitter to promote ACs book and then he disappeared again... I don't know what's up with that.

SOMEONE HAS TO TELL DONALD J. TRUMP THAT HILLARY IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BILL'S INFIDELITY AND NEITHER IS SHE AN ENABLER, AND EVEN IF SHE WERE, THAT IS NOT A VOTING ISSUE.
IT WILL HAVE ZERO EFFECT ON POLICY MATTERS, SOMETHING TRUMP KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT, ALTHOUGH
CHRIS CHRISTIE'S NAME HAS COME UP AS VP IN SEVERAL PANEL DISCUSSIONS.
CHRISTIE, I HAVE TO ADMIT, WILL MAKE A GOOD LAP DOG....HE EASILY RESPONDS TO COMMANDS LIKE FETCH, SIT AND STAY, AND LOOKS THE PART OF THE LOYAL DOMESTICATED PIGLET. IN FACT, HE IS BETTER THAN PAT NIXON AT THE "GAZE."
WHEN TRUMP SPEAKS, YOU CAN EASILY IMAGINE CHRISTIE SALIVATING, AND TAIL WAGGING.
@JAANZA: KAYLEIGH'S 'WORD SALAD' HAD AC CONFUSED? THAT'S A FIRST. SHE MAKES SARAH PALIN SEEM
SHARP AS A TACK. WAS SHE WEARING RED, OR JUST MAKING THE OTHER PANELISTS FANTASIZING ABOUT HER DISAPPEARANCE AT JOHN KING'S MAGIC WALL?

Anderson acting like he didn't know about Trump's reported affairs was priceless. I tend to think he's not that stupid and was just setting up Kayleigh and she fell for it. So Trump the serial cheater is calling out Hillary for being an enabler for her husband's affair(s)?

The claims Trump and his supporters on the panel were making were litigated in the 90s and didn't work then. The New York Times has been piling on the Clinton's for years and I'm guessing they will continue to do so through the election. I can only hope they hold Trump accountable as well, but so far no one in the media seems to be doing so. There is concern that media will give him a pass and give Hillary negative press in the hopes that the race keeps tight for their ratings. CNN seems to have been doing this so I don't see Anderson/AC360 changing anything given the ratings boost that Trump has given them. And Anderson can say all he wants but story selection and guests are being dictated by ratings/Zucker because his job depends on ratings. Zucker turned to Trump for The Apprentice for ratings to save his job at NBC when reality TV was taking off. Trump and Zucker have a long relationship and you can bet Zucker will continue to use Trump for ratings and Trump will continue to use CNN for free airtime for his campaign.

The interview Anderson did with David Axelrod made me miss the Anderson/AC360 we all loved and admired all those years ago. I like to think that guy is still somewhere waiting to break out again. I will try to continue to remain hopeful, but it's getting harder these days.
