Anderson Cooper 360 on Friday, July 22, 2016

Anderson Cooper anchored an expanded two hour edition of AC360 from the NYC studio.   There was true breaking news of Hillary Clinton selecting Senator Tim Kaine as her running mate and also the news of the attack in Germany was covered.

A behind the scenes photo from tonight's AC360 posted to Twitter:

I got to 360 just when Anderson finished a question to Jeff Zeleny about Hillary Clinton choosing Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) as her Veep. Zeleny reported on the details and then it was Gloria Borger and Dana Bash for their perspectives. They discussed Hillary working with Kaine, his knowledge of Spanish, how that will work for Hispanic voters and how will Independents react. Then Anderson introduced the rest of the panel: Dex Burns, Tara Setmayer, Christine Quinn and Scottie Neil Hughes for more analysis of Kaine, looking ahead to the Veep debate, the idea that both Hillary and Trump made safe choices and how might Gov. McAuliffe (D-VA) replace Kaine if Hillary wins.

The second segment started with a Brianna Keller report on how Hillary made her choice and another report of a biography of Kaine. That report had the line "...this is an anti-Establishment year..." I don't think so; Trump is displaying the importance of voting for someone with political experience.

Next up was the shooting in Munich, Germany - 10 dead and the German-iranian shooter's apparent suicide. There was video of part of the shooting, a witness account and a second video of an argument the gunman had shortly before or during the shooting. Anderson had a Q&A with Barbara Starr about the details, the police investigation, Germany's immigration issues and ISIS influence. Anderson read statements from Hillary, Trump and a video comment from Obama. All this was analyzed by the panel of Paul Cruickshank, Robert Baer, Juliette Kayyem and (Ret.) Lt. Gen. Mark Herting.

Meanwhile Trump is again attacking Cruz and that started the last segment of the first hour. The Sara Murray report included Trump's past diss of Cruz's wife, his current backtracking from that and his allegations against Cruz's father. The report included clips from Trump's speech last night and an Obama response to Trump's claim 'there's no law and order'.

I didn't watch the second hour.

Although I do not like excessive Trump coverage, I wish there was a minute more of it in today's 360 to cover Donald Trump Jr's remark copied here from the Robert Draper article in the New York Times 7/20/16:

Donald Jr. explained that his father’s vice president would be in charge of domestic and foreign policy.
Then what, the adviser asked, would Trump be in charge of?
“Making America great again” was the casual reply.

(Donald Jr. is disputing this account.)
Maybe this was extensively covered and debated in panel during CNN's convention coverage and I simply missed it?

Thanks, ATA, for the Triumph the Insult Comic Dog video. Good stuff, glad to see Anderson had fun with Triumph but 'Triumph meets Star Wars fans' video is funnier.
