Anderson Cooper 360 on Friday, November 18th, 2016

With Anderson Cooper on vacation, the very capable John Berman was in the AC360 anchor chair for an expanded two hour edition of AC360.  The AC360 special on Hillary Clinton's campaign did not air, but a second live hour of AC360 aired in it's place.

Anderson is scheduled to be a guest co-host on Live with Kelly on Tuesday November 29th.

Berman's first hour on Friday was all Trump. The hour started with a Paul Vercammon report on Trump settling the lawsuit against his own "University" for $25 million. The report included a bunch of clips of Trump stating he'll win and "I never settle cases". Berman had a Q&A with Sara Murray about Trump's activities today; during this the on-screen title was "Trump Fills Key Posts With Controversial Hard-Liners". I did not watch the panel of 6.

Pamela Brown reported on Sen. Jeff Sessions, his past, his racist comments, his failed confirmation for U.S. Federal Judge in 1986 and his nomination now for Attorney General. The panel of 6 came back and I left.

For the next segment Berman discussed three Trump nominees with just one person: David Axelrod. The discussion went really well, no need for five more pundits, and they covered Sessions, retired Gen. Flynn (possible National Security Advisor) and Rep. Mike Pompeo (possible head of the CIA). The pace and nature of Trump's transition team was also mentioned.

The Trump University settlement was covered by just Berman, Michael D'Antonio and Laura Coates. They talked about the case, the settlement, Trump's conflicts of interest as President and the alleged "blind trust" for his company.

Gary Tuchman went to a small town in Alabama to ask Trump voters what they thought about Trump so far and the people he's chosen for his administration. All the on-camera folks were very much okay with all Trump's been doing. When talking to Berman after the report, Tuchman said he was able to find one Hillary voter but she didn't want her vote to be known; that woman said Sessions and Flynn "have skeletons in their closets".
Berman previewed the start of the second hour: Trump meeting with Romney.

Berman did a good job but the entire first hour was on Trump and I have to presume most of the second hour was too. I forgot about the Hillary Clinton campaign special that was supposed to be on. It wouldn't surprise me if it's aired 3 AM on Sunday and that's it.

My computer's spell-check keeps changing Berman to Herman but I think I corrected them all.

@Pragya, If you're wondering why some of your comments aren't being posted the rules state we don't post comments with links in them.

@JAANZA: SINCE YOUR SPELL CHECK IS CHANGING BERMAN TO HERMAN, MAYBE IT CAN CHANGE TRUMP TO HILLARY.
SO EVERY TIME CNN SPEAKS OF "THE TRUMP TRANSITION TEAM," IT CAN SAY "HILLARY'S TRANSITION TEAM."
I FEEL BETTER ALREADY.

@Phebe

Aah oh, thank you for letting me know :) That makes sense.

I was trying to link to the David Axelrod podcast with AC, I thought it answered a lot of our questions about the election coverage.

I just want to thank Pragya for her recent contributions to this blog, her comments are thoughtful, measured and objective, something that's been missing around here (I'm looking at all those who accuse AC of being anti-Hillary and pro-Trump, as well as those who accuse him of being pro-Hillary and anti-Trump). I totally agree with Pragya that AC has been trying to remain fair to each candidate, but unfortunately in these incredibly divided times, that's not enough for some who want to project their own bias and agenda onto him. That's a shame, but it is a good reflection of the troubled times we live in. Anyway, I hope Pragya will keep contributing comments here, as her opinion is extremely valuable and much needed to temper the usual negativity that has sadly come to characterize the majority of the posts here.

My opinion hasn't changed about how Anderson covered Trump as opposed to how he reported on Hillary and since AC360 was gung-ho about going after every so-called Obama Administration 'scandal' that never really amounted to anything, I certainly hope they are equally as vigilant about the Trump administration because it sure does seem that there's a LOT to investigate there--corruption, conflict of interest, potential cabinet members with highly questionable history and backgrounds, just for starters. I hope AC360 and other journalists and news organizations do their jobs and don't simply go easy on Trump for access or out of intimidation.

@Anonymous

Thank you so much! You are too kind :D

I honestly felt really bad about losing my cool yesterday because I realize how contentious my posts turned out to be. I guess I was just fed up reading all the negative feedback on Anderson on twitter, from both sides, and then coming here and seeing more of the same. But I will definitely keep posting here when I can.

@aries moon
That is your opinion, and I respect that. You have every right to interpret the show as you see fit. And you are very rational about your opinions. The people I take issue with are the ones who insist Anderson "sold out" to either Hillary or Trump.

I don't know if any of you saw the SNL skit from the last episode? They spoofed AC360 and they seem to have the same issues with the show that I do. First of all they did acknowledge that the panels on the issue are generally 5 people critiquing Trump and 1 Trump surrogate. And they did highlight that Anderson tries to "hold Trump accountable", however the whole format of the show is completely ineffectual. I hope the AC360 team watched the skit and learns from it. If anyone here hasn't watched it, I highly recommend it. It is hard on anderson and AC360, but it is fair, and it is hilarious!

THE CAST OF HAMILTON NEED NOT APOLOGIZE JUST BECAUSE THEY VOICED THEIR OPINION. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH
DRUMPF HAS NOT READ THE CONSTITUTION IN FULL. HE HAS SKIPPED OVER AMENDMENT ONE WHICH GIVES US ALL FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND EXPRESSION. OF COURSE THERE ARE OTHER THINGS HE HAS NOT READ
AND SNL WAS RIGHT IN CALLING HIM "MAN WITHOUT A PLAN." ALEC BALWIN CONTINUES TO PERSONIFY THE PERSONALITY OF DRUMPF. HIS FACIAL EXPRESSIONS ALONE ARE RIGHT ON TARGET.
PRESIDENT TWEET DOESN'T APPROVE OF THE WAY HE IS DEPICTED, MAYBE HE SHOULD TAKE A SELFIE OR BETTER
YET, HAVE A GOOD LOOK IN THE MIRROR.
IN ANOTHER SKIT BALDWIN DEPICTS DRUMPF AS A DIMWIT....AND THE PRESIDENT ELECT SAID IT WAS "NOT FUNNY." GET USED TO IT AND GROW A THICKER SKIN OR YOU WON'T SURVIVE THE NEXT FOUR. (WE CAN ONLY HOPE)

Btw, did you see the list of "media insiders" and also the names of the correspondents having a secret meeting with Trump? Very shocking.

And no Anderson (big surprise), but Martha Raddatz, Erin Burnett, Wolf Blitzer... the last people I expected, to be honest.

And Piers Morgan is one of the "insiders" along with Sean Hannity.

@Pragya, your comments here are most welcome and I was actually just making a general statement about how I've felt about 360 and AC for a while now. As far as the 360 panels go, I wish they'd just get rid of them altogether and have AC speak one on one with a guest representing whichever side separately and then get the rebuttal from the other side separately. I'm probably going to cut back on the amount of time I watch 360--if there are good investigative pieces on DJT, I'm all in, but other than that, I don't think I can stomach too much of 360 or CNN in general these days.

@Cappy, I thought what the 'Hamilton' cast did while Pence was attending the show was awesome. Leave it to DJT to get it all completely wrong and not understand the concept of freedom of speech.

@ARIES MOON: I FEEL LIKE THAT LITTLE GIRL WHO CRIED WHEN SHE LEARNED THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA WOULDN'T
BE PRESIDENT FOREVER. WE ARE GOING FROM A CONSTITUTIONAL LAW PROFESSOR TO SOMEONE WHO HAS NOT ONE
CLUE WHAT THE CONSTITUTION MEANS AND HE GETS TO BE PRESIDENT. THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS SYSTEM AND THE CONSTITUTION NEEDS SEVERAL AMENDMENTS TO UPDATE IT.

Well that's what the voting machines in Michigan did. So who knows if she actually did get so many more popular votes since they didn't realize the problem until people started voting. Lol

UNICORNS BACON said...

Uhmmm.. have you been watching CNN lately. All they've been doing since Trump won is investigate/speculate...

UNICORNS BACON said...

Well Sean Hannity was a given... (Take a shot everytime Trump says Sean Hannity)
But I'm shocked that anyone from CNN would be involved.
