Anderson Cooper 360 on Tuesday, January 24th, 2017

Anderson Cooper anchored an expanded two hour edition of AC360 from the NYC studio.

Trump tweeted the following after AC360 so will this be a topic during tomorrow night's program?

I was 4 minutes late; Anderson was talking to Jeff Zeleny and the chyron was about Trump's claim of 3 to 5 million illegal votes, the chyron also stated "...Offers No Proof". There was a clip of spokesman Sean Spicer spinning it as Trump's "belief" based upon "the studies he's seen" and attempting to spin away questions on 'why no investigation then into he biggest voter fraud in history' by saying "It's possible" with nothing concrete. Anderson interviewed David Becker who did a study on outdated voter rolls in 2012. Bottom line from Becker: voter fraud is rare, no way it's in the millions. Joe Johns' report on numerous lies Trump told during the campaign was fun to watch.

Anderson introduced a panel of 5 to discuss Trump's voter fraud delusion and I switched to Hayes. When I got back jeff Zeleny was also back, this time reporting on Trump's plan - to be announced tomorrow - on immigration policy, bans on Muslims, vetting immigrants and Obama's DREAM Act.

"Badlands National Park Tweets On Climate Change Deleted" said the chyron at the start of the third segment. After a clip of Spicer spinning on this subject Anderson talked to Rene Marsh about the details of Badlands doing this in light of Trump's climate change denials. The panel returned to discuss and I left again.

Trump has given the go-ahead for the Keystone and DAPL oil pipelines and the panel discussed this too and again I went away.

Going away meant I missed the start of the Robert Reich and Jeffrey Lord debate on whether Trump is good for U.S. business. I enjoyed watching even though it was totally predictable: Reich being the voice of sense and reason and Lord seeing everything as incredibly rosy.
Anderson previewed the start of the second hour - Trump's voter fraud claims.

No Monday rundown posts while "Gotham" is airing new episodes.

@ATA -Loved seeing CNN's response to Trump's tweet about ratings. Not only should Anderson comment on this, all the anchors on all the CNN shows should point out how wrong/delusional/flat-out lying Trump is.

@CAPPY - about your first comment in yesterday's ATA post -
First, Anderson should pointblank tell Jeffrey Lord he's lying or repeating lies and to tell the truth or else he's off the show. But, at least now, I can't see him actually doing it. He'll be polite and even display pretty good pushback but not deliver that kind of ultimatim.
Second, Dan Rather just recently suggested all journalists do that exact same ultimatim. Rather wrote an article, Daily Kos had it on their site, that said 'Hey Journalists, you should ask GOP politicians and spokespeople how they will combat Trump lies and if they don't answer, spin or deflect Then immidiately end the interview and don't invite them back'. He pointed out that these politicians and pundits need the exposure and the spotlight much more than the journalists need them.

Trump's 'war' with CNN is still perplexing, I'm not sure I really buy it considering how Jeff Zucker catered to him during the campaign and was the one who helped make Trump a hit in The Apprentice. I guess Trump's at war with anyone who dares to call him out--the Trump team has supposedly blacklisted CNN according to Media Matters--they won't allow any of their team on the network. Cappy mentioned that Jake Tapper hit Trump hard over his voter fraud claims and Jeff Zeleny (usually not a fan of his) challenged Spicer during Tuesday's press conference about it--hopefully anchors/reporters from all networks are beginning to do the job of holding Trump accountable and demanding answers. On Chris Hayes show, there was a former never Trumper who said that Republicans don't care what Trump does as long as he keeps signing those Executive Orders and enacting their agenda--that's basically all he's good for as far as they're concerned. Meanwhile, where's the outrage from the press about all of these executive orders Trump's signing--President Obama didn't sign an excessive amount of EO's during his two terms but the press and the GOP always threw a fit when he did--not a peep about what Trump's been doing. I'm still furious about the GOP holding up President Obama's pick for the Supreme Court--depriving him of his chance to put another justice on the bench--it sickens me that TRUMP is getting that opportunity that President Obama should've had. Democrats don't seem to be standing up to the Trump Administration at all, even Elizabeth Warren voted for Ben Carson for HUD Secretary and many Dems have voted for the other Trump cabinet nominees--I know fighting the GOP is close to useless considering that they are the majority, but I was hoping the Dems would at least make a show of resisting Trump's picks.

Ugh, Ari Fleischer was on AC360, I can't imagine anyone wanting to hear from him again. He said he was out of Washington DC and politics, so what the heck do we need to see him for? He's as corrupt, immoral and rotten as Trump and needs to stay off tv, period.

Ugh, John McCain was on still trying to trash talk and blame President Obama and his foreign policy strategy, but couldn't really give a real critique of Trump putting US troops in danger by saying he'd take the oil from Iraq--a war crime. How can AC take McCain seriously when AC has to know General Flynn, who McCain respects and supports, is a total lunatic?

Van Jones made a good point about how the press is so easily distracted by Trump's missteps and silly battles that real substantive discussions about the devastating impact of all of the executive orders he's signing will have on the future of the country is barely talked about. AC360 and other news programs need to focus more on those issues and not get distracted by Trump's follies (although I admit I do like hearing about him screwing up bigly). Speaking of Van, I know how AC loves his reports on those Trump voters but I can't get past the fact that those people voted for a racist, sexist moron who's going to ruin their lives and millions of others. AC gushes over these reports, but he and Van piss me off dismissing the real racism inherent in these supposedly 'good' Americans.

I'm not happy about how 360's been throwing most of its Dem/liberal-related reports near the very end of the second hour. Perhaps they should remember the massive numbers who came out for the Women's March and the nearly 3 million who gave Hillary Clinton her popular vote win and recognize that there are millions of people who reject all things Trump and still deserve to have their voices heard and not just pushed to the 'back' of the show.

@Cappy, you mentioned in an earlier post about President Obama dinging Jake Tapper at one of those WH Correspondence dinners--now that you mention it, I do remember that incident--the president was not thrilled with Tapper at all.

not just Jake, Anderson went in hard on Trump too yesterday and started the show with the "keeping them honest" segment in which he straight out said "The president is spreading falsehoods" then he had an interview with mccain where mccain was like his iraq comments made no sense. So I am pretty sure Trump got mad at that and tweeted against CNN. Because he always tweets during AC360. He likes to watch that. I don't think he watches Jake Tapper.
I know you have deep seated resentment against CNN for giving Trump air time and so you can't understand Trump's anger but it is not that hard to follow. Jeff used Trump for ratings in the primary and then when the actual election started, he pulled that support and let his journos go in on him. Trump took it as a "betrayal." Now when journos like Tapper and AC don't give him a pass, it infuriates him even more. He wanted CNN to be another Fox. Because he thought they were friends. But CNN, while it has it's flaws, is not Fox. which is why he is so bitter about CNN of all things. And also NBC, because again, he watches NBC, he used to work there and he thought they were friends so they owed him loyalty. Simple.

Yesterday's AC360 was brilliant. Though I am starting to get really worried for AC. Trump's supproters are insane.

I think Anderson and the rest of the CNN team were very pissed off about Obama's "off-the-record" meetings with certain members of the press which they found unethical. Brian Stelter tweeted about it recently.

I saw the Jake Tapper clip from yesterday. I am glad he is getting recognition for it, but AC had almost exactly the same segment on his show a couple of hours later and no one is recognizing him for it? I find that unfair.

I am curious about you saying you don't buy the war. You think it is staged? But what is CNN getting out of it? A lot of Trump supporters and Republicans are calling it fake news (and CNN had a lot of republican viewers), so they are losing credibility and viewership. CNN is not getting any access to the govt, so no ratings there. They are not getting any exclusives. The crazy Trump supporters keep sending their reporters death threats. So what is CNN getting out of this?

I feel really bad for CNN and AC now. They stick their neck out more than other network, they get Trump's anger, yet they get no benefit out of it. Everyone else who gets dissed by Trump gets support but CNN. Anderson pressed Trump repeatedly about sexual assault, went head to head with Kellyanne many times, asked for an apology from the admin, and now called trump a liar, all the while being aware that Trump was watching and would try to bully CNN into shutting up. But people will still not give him credit. On the other hand people like david Muir who have never taken a stand in their life will get the exclusives (by the way Anderson had got this interview with Obama, the first official WH interview) and the success. Maybe AC should just give up and go hang out with Andy and Kelly. Why risk his career and life for no reason?

Honestly I am most annoyed at MSNBC. They acted so hoiler than thou about CNN and then went ahead and hired a Fox news anchor as soon as trump became president. Joe and Mika were at Trump's NYE party. Trump never attacks them. They never break any stories on Trump. Yet they act like the messiahs of the liberal movement and people fall for it. It is so unfair.

@Pragya, Trump has had several 'wars' with CNN where he rails against them only to relent a while later and allow himself or Melania to do an interview with AC or another top CNN anchor. CNN's wall to wall coverage of Trump and the hiring of Corey Lewandowski and numerous other Trump surrogates made CNN look to many as though they were trying to cater to Trump and push him into the White House--Trump has a long history with CNN boss Jeff Zucker, so Trump trash talking CNN gives the network cover with Trump voters, who like when Trump goes after CNN, and some liberals who'll see Trump's criticism of CNN as evidence that CNN's not showing favoritism to Trump when they actually are. What CNN was hoping to get out of this arrangement was more conservative leaning viewers. It may be better for CNN to be on Trump's hit list because then they can focus on actually holding him accountable instead of trying to snag another interview with him, but I bet this latest feud won't last either.

@anon 9:17, I didn't hear much criticism from AC or Tapper of Trump when he had a couple of off the record meetings with reporters himself after the election.

@ARIES MOON: I THINK YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD....TRUMP IS A MANIPULATOR AND HE KNOWS HOW TO MANIPULATE CNN TO HIS ADVANTAGE. ALL OF A SUDDEN GLORIA BORGER IS FINDING FAULT WITH TRUMP AND HOW HE IS PURSUING VOTER FRAUD. LAST SUMMER SHE DEFENDED HIM, MAKING US NAUSEATED, AND THEN SHE HAS A COMPLETE 360. SOMETHING JUST DOESN'T ADD UP.

BILL MAHER SAID IT BEST TONIGHT." LIBERALS ARE TOO BUSY APOLOGIZING FOR BEING LIBERAL AND
ACTING POLITICALLY CORRECT. AND WHILE THEY AND SOME DEMOCRATS WERE APOLOGIZING, A MAD MAN WAS ABLE
TO TAKE OVER THE WHITE HOUSE." IN EFFECT THIS COULD BE CALLED A GOP POLITICAL COUP THAT TOOK OVER
OUR DEMOCRACY. VERY FRIGHTENING.
