Anderson Cooper 360 on Thursday, February 2, 2017

Anderson Cooper anchored an expanded two hour edition of AC360 from the NYC studio.  Since someone commented on Charles Blow being MIA on 360, tonight he was on the giant panel.

Charles Blow on panel during 8pmET hour:

video

Jim Scuitto's report on the Yemen raid (Trump's first military action) that didn't go so well despite reports to the contrary from the Trump administration.  Missing from the report was that a female 8 year old U.S. citizen was killed in the raid.:

video

During the 9pmET hour there was more on the fallout from Trump's phone calls with world leaders and a pretty good panel discussion that included Carl Bernstein and David Gergen:

video

Anderson also interview Maajid Nawaz about Trump's travel ban fueling Muslim extremism.  Maajid touched on the White Supremacist who killed people at a Mosque in Quebec.  The suspect admitted to admiring Trump so is that the reason this tragedy wasn't covered?  We all know that Anderson Cooper/AC360 typically has a lot of coverage of terrorist acts and Canada is calling this a terrorist act.  Also no mention about a Reuter's report that Trump wants to focus the counter-extremism program solely on Islam when White Supremacy extremism is on the rise in the U.S.

video

The last segment of the second hour was a report on Steve Bannon, Trump's advisor who has rather questionable views and Trump's ear:

video

Something you haven't heard covered on AC360 was Rudi Guliani's admission on Fox News that Trump's travel ban, really is a Muslim Ban and how Rudi helped craft it.  We found video of Rudi's segment and the ban discussion starts about 1/2 way in.

I've had a terrible track record this week:
Monday - "Gotham"
Tuesday - didn't watch because it was the "Trump SCOTUS Ta-Da" anchored by Blister and Tapper
Wednesday - got home late and to 360 with only 10 minutes left in the first hour. Anderson was interviewing Glenn Beck, followed by a rather fluffy report on Melania Trump.

At the start of Thrusday's 360 I never got the name of the first reporter Anderson talked to about "WH: New Israeli Settlements "May Not Be Helpful" ". But next he spoke with Michelle Kosinski for the State Dept/diplomacy angle which included talk on possibly more sanctions on Iran. After a clip of U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley's comment on Russia and Ukraine, a panel of 6 started. I went to Hayes.

Trump and diplomacy was still the topic in the second segment, this time the focus began with his phone call to Australian Prime Minister Turnbull. A Sara Murray report stated the call did not go well because Turnbull wanted the U.S. to keep its refugee agreement they had; other allies have been "unnerved" by Trump's comments especially Mexico but in response Trump told his supporters "don't worry". Anderson interviewed Mexico Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray. The chyron said Videgaray wanted "to set the record straight" about Trump's calls to Mexican President Pena Neito, Trump's other comments, U.S./Mexican relations under Trump and NAFTA.

The third segment looked like it would be entirely a panel discussion. i left.

Trump's misbegotten raid in Yemen was up next. Jim Sciutto pointed out that the planning of the raid started under the Obama administration but Trump made the final decision to go ahead with it even though more planning should have been done. Nothing was gained, a U.S. Navy SEAL and numerous Yemeni civilians died (including an 8-year-old girl who was an American, as ATA already said). Sciutto's report detailed the day-to-day breakdown on how it happened. Anderson interviewed Lt.Gen. Mark Hertling and Mike Rogers. Hertling saw obvious problems with rushing the raid but Rogers said it was well-planned, the world is dangerous, gotta fight terrorism, yada yada yada.

Trump met with Harley-Davidson executives. Big whoop. But it was an excuse to segue into a Jason Carroll report on "Wisconsin Voters Weigh In On Pres. Trump". This took place at a bar outside of Milwaukee and paid little attention.

I did not see the second hour but watched some of the ATA vidoes from that hour. I liked Jim Acosta's report on Trump "diplomacy" with Australia and Mexico and, at the National Prayer Breakfast of all places, ranting about "The Apprentice" ratings. Bernstein and Gergen are two smart guys. Trump parrot Jeffrey Lord didn't need to be there, he provided only spin and deflection.

I also watched the interview with Maajid Nawaz; he brought up several good points and it should have been longer.

And watched about 2 1/2 minutes of the 7 minute video on Steve Bannon. Gary Tuchman's report has many audio clips of Bannon's opinions but I just didn't want to hear all of it.

Infuriating how Mike Rogers tried to place blame and shame on the Obama Administration for 'politicizing' the disastrous Yemen raid. The Obama Administration issued a statement about the raid because Team Trump said President Obama approved it previously and that is simply untrue.

Interesting point about 360 not doing a report on the Quebec white supremicist terrorist--I'd hate to think that 360 is avoiding this story because the suspect is a Trump backer, but in a way, I wouldn't be all that surprised either.

Steve Bannon's white supremicist admirers (there are many) must love how he and Trump are not going to focus on THEM as active terrorists--now they can continue to escalate their racist ad homophobic attacks with no condemnation whatsoever from the 'leader' of this nation.

AC, along with David Gergen and Carl Bernstein, gave some good push back against Jeff Lord's ludicrous defense of Trump's offensive behavior towards the Australian Prime Minister--what an embarrassment Trump is--won't be long before Trump's idiocy will force him to make an actual 'apology tour', the very thing that the GOP falsely accused President Obama of doing when he was just being the decent, compassionate human being he is. Can't say that about Trump.

So glad to see Charles Blow back on 360 and I hope he'll show up more regularly in the future.

Is this the new normal now? Violent protest, rioting in liberal cities? Wednesday California, last night NYU. I would like to see an investigation into who is funding and organizing these events. This is beyond free speech these are acts of terrorism. When you attack, riot, loot and wear mask to conceal idenity... these are acts of terrorism and I hope feds along with local law enforecement crack down on this. Reagardless if yoy agree with what someone says or their political stance, violence is never the route. That is what made this country great... the anti facist as Winston Churchhill said are really the facist. The alt left and their media allies are out to destroy america. Trump supporters should not be attacked, just like Hillary supporters. This the very definition of terrorism... commitng violent acts to further a political cause. I think these events will only grow unfortunately... troops will need to be called in soon to combat the violent, facist, communist being encourage by media and elected officials. This has to stop. Not protest but these violent thugs that attack people and burn, loot and deny our first amendment rights. These attacks are on america itself!

It wasn't ludricous the U.S. has a right to accept who they want in country as far as immigrants, refugees. Trump was just telling him he was not happy about the deal and things will be different now on who they accept in country, what is wrong with that? Yoy may want all bad people or carelessly don't mind who comes into our countelry but majority of us do care and want to feel a lot safer than what we did last 8 years under Obama's horrible foreign policy deals. Look at Iran now... Trump is not Obama we will be tougher and smarter when it comes to certain things.

Get your damn facts straight, the protests were peaceful until some anarchists showed up, of course you wouldn't know that because you only believe what's coming out of Right Wing media sources or alternative facts. How about your precious KellyAnne making up attacks just to make a stupid point? Acts on America are coming from YOUR Preditor in Chief YOUR Congress and YOUR Right Wng Media. Oh and learn to spell or did you go to Trump U where The Donald taught spelling 101 and grammar. And I bet ATA won't post this because they don't want to make waves.

"TRUMP IS NOT OBAMA. WE WILL BE TOUGHER AND SMARTER ABOUT A LOT OF THINGS." YOU'RE RIGHT. HE'S NOT.
SORRY, WE MIGHT BE TOUGHER, BUT NEVER SMARTER.
THIS IDIOT HAS NEVER STUDIED CONSTITUTIONAL LAW. HE HAS NO CLUE WHAT THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT DOES.
HE DOESN'T KNOW THERE IS A BALANCE OF POWER. HE DOESN'T KNOW THERE ARE CHECKS AND BALANCES PUT INTO
PLACE SO NO ONE BECOMES A DEMAGOGUE. HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW THE BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT....GIVE ME A
I DON'T THINK HE KNOWS THERE ARE FIFTY STATES. BECAUSE HE DOESN'T OR WOULDN'T RECOGNIZE HAWAII.
GIVE ME A BREAK! BUT THAN HE DOESN'T RECOGNIZE GUAM OR PUERTO RICO, BECAUSE HE DOESN'T KNOW THEY ARE CONSIDERED TERRITORIES..AND HE DOESN'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.
SHAMEFUL WHOM WE CALL "THE PRESIDENT." RESPECT HIM?? NEVER.

PRESIDENT TRUMP, AND I HAVE TO LAUGH WHEN I WRITE THAT, IT EVEN SOUNDS LUDICROUS, YES, IF DON JUAN
CHAOS WANTS TO INVADE A COUNTRY, SUCH AS YEMEN.....HE MUST FIND IT ON THE MAP. WE ALL KNOW HE DOESN'T KNOW WHERE IT IS. SO WHAT DOES HE DO ABOUT THE INVASION THAT WAS "NOT 100% SUCCESSFUL."
BLAME IT ON OBAMA. HEY STUPID, OBAMA ISN'T THERE ANYMORE. I KNOW YEMEN EXISTED, BUT YOU CAN'T BLAME OBAMA IF HE ISN'T IN OFFICE ANY LONGER, ALTHOUGH YOU WILL.
AND IS IT MY IMAGINATION OR WAS JON STEWART RIGHT WHEN HE SAID TRUMP'S RED TIE IS GETTING LONGER EVERY
DAY?? IN ONE SHOT IN THE CLIP, IT IS PRACTICALLY DRAGGING ON THE GROUND. HEY, EVERY TIME HE TELLS A LIE, THE TIE GROWS LONGER.....NOW WHO DO WE KNOW FROM OUR NURSERY RHYMES?" JUST IMAGINE HOW LONG IT WILL BE BY THE TIME HE LEAVES OFFICE....NOT SOON ENOUGH.
I'M BEGINNING TO LIKE DAVID GERGEN AGAIN.....YOU CAN TELL THAT HE THINKS THE CROWN PRINCE IS AN IDIOT, BUT HE PONDERS IN THOUGHT IN ORDER TO KEEP HIS JOB WITH CNN.
I'M ALL IN FAVOR OF AN "APOLOGY TOUR" FOR DON JUAN, BUT HE MUST FIRST APOLOGIZE TO THE UNITED STATES. NOW THAT WOULD BE A REAL TREAT FOR THOSE OF US LOOKING FOR HIS INNER "HUMILITY."
