Anderson Cooper 360 on Wednesday, March 8, 2017

Anderson Cooper anchored AC360 in the 8pmET hour from NYC.   We are scratching our heads over the "Breaking News" banner as CNN has had a countdown clock for the Van Jones Town Hall on their screen all day!

A CNN SCROLL SAID THAT MELANIA TRUMP HAD A 62% APPROVAL RATING. REALLY? WHAT HAS SHE DONE TO DESERVE ANY RATING? SHE SAT IN THE GALLERY DURING HIS SOTU AND WAVED.
IVANKA HAS BEEN THE ONE TO RELIEVE HER OF MOST OF HER OFFICIAL DUTIES. THE WOMAN APPARENTLY WANTS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE WHITE HOUSE AND PROBABLY FEELS IT IS BENEATH HER TO ACTUALLY LIVE IN A HOUSE BUILT BY SLAVES WHEN SHE CAN LIVE IN THE PENTHOUSE AT TRUMP TOWERS.
HER HUSBAND ISN'T THE TYPE TO WANT HER TO EXCEL BECAUSE IT WOULD ONLY DISTRACT FROM HIM. HE
IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN HIS LIFE AND NOTHING CAN OVERSHADOW THIS FACT, I MEAN ALTERNATIVE FACT.
AT ANY RATE, WE CAN SEE THAT SHE HAS NOTHING OBVIOUS TO OFFER. SHE WILL ESCORT HIM TO VARIOUS FUNCTIONS AND WAVE. FAR BE IT FOR HER TO HAVE AN AGENDA. HER AGENDA WAS ACCOMPLISHED...MARRY A RICH AMERICAN AND HAVE A MALE CHILD. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. CHECK.

I didn't like Wednesday's 360 emphasizing Trump's claim of wiretapping by Obama or talking about the GOP healthcare plan without emphasizing that there are no dollar amounts in the bill (it has not yet been sent to the Government Accounting Office for cost predictions). Anderson talked to Jeff Zeleny about both stories but Zeleny's report had more time spent covering the new healthcare bill, who doesn't like it and Trump's team's efforts to garner support for it. Phil Mattingly had a report on House Speaker Paul Ryan and the rest of the GOP still wrangling over what's in the bill, Democrats criticizing it and a number of outside medical groups in opposition to it. Four pundits on a panel isn't too terrible but Kaleigh McEnany's presence made me switch to Hayes.

The artificially-created sideshow that is the wiretapping story also started the second segment. Anderson covered how the Trump and Obama "camps" contacted each other, the non-committal comment from Veep Pence, Senator Lindsey Graham's comment, the possible investigation and possible subpoenas in the future. The Q&A with Jessica Schneider covered these topics and included a bit on investigating Russian influence in the election and FBI Director Comey's future. Anderson's interview with Rep. Troy Gowdy (R-SC) seemed entirely on investigating the alleged wiretapping.

Not done with the wiretapping fantasy, the third segment started with news that Obama was "...Irked, Exasperated..." by Trump's claim. Nonetheless it was a pretty decent panel with David Axelrod, Carl Bernstein and Gloria Borger discussing all of this. Bernstein correctly labeled it "a diversion" and Axelrod made some points on Trump's Russian connections.

If today's 360 had been a two-hour show I believe news of the Women's Strike Day and the interview with Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood, would have been in the second hour. Anderson started this segment by reading Trump's tweet on how much he respects women (a tweet that blatantly obviously wasn't written by him). And I was glad to see Richards on the show for a good interview. But I wish Anderson didn't have to promote a CNN special on Melania Trump coming up on Friday and I wish CNN wouldn't broadcast fluffy publicity for her.

The last segment was a preview/promo for "The Messy Truth with Van Jones" coming up next. I went to Hayes.

@CAPPY - The fact the White House was built by slaves probably doesn't matter as much to Melania as wanting to stay hundreds of miles away from him for as long as possible. She probably doesn't care that Trump Tower was built by immigrants (I read mostly Polish) who Trump later stiffed on paying in full.

@JAANZA: YOU'RE RIGHT. SHE ALSO WANTS TO STAY "HUNDREDS OF MILES AWAY FROM HIM FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE." BUT SHE DOES ACT AS THOUGH SHE IS "ENTITLED" TO THE GOOD LIFE. SHE DOESN'T MIND ACCOMPANYING HIM TO THEIR PALM BEACH RESORT....THEN AGAIN THAT PLACE IS REALLY BIG. GOOD PLACE
TO HIDE OUT.
MICHELLE OBAMA APPRECIATED LIVING IN THE WHITE HOUSE FOR THE THAT VERY REASON: IT WAS A HOUSE BUILT BY SLAVES AND SHE WAS QUITE AWARE OF ITS HISTORIC RELEVANCE. MELANIA COULD CARE LESS.
THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR UPDATES ON 360.
