Anderson Cooper 360 on Friday, June 2, 2017

Anderson Cooper anchored AC360 in the 8pm and 9pm ET hours from the NYC studio.  Towards the end of the second hour Randi Kay broke in with a birthday message for Anderson, who turns 50 on Saturday!

Here's a brief rundown of the topics Anderson covered during the first hour of Friday's 360:

- "WH On Global Warming: Don't Ask Us!" regarding Sean Spicer, Kellyanne Conway and others evading and deflecting questions about climate change, the Paris Accord and Trump's views. Anderson pointed out that "responding" to a question was not the same as "answering" it. He talked to Jim Acosta on this topic and the Russia investigation and whether Trump will block Comey's upcoming testimony. Then Anderson interviewed an expert in climate change before starting a panel of 5.
Doesn't everybody say "climate change" now instead of "global warming"? I wondered why the chyron was written that way.

- A clip of former NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg's statement on climate change, his $15 million donation to help stop/slow it and his view on how this effects the economy. The same panel convened again.

- Deputy AG Rosenstein's upcoming testimony before the House? Senate? committee investigating Russia, what Comey might say, if Trump will use Executive Privilege to block Comey, Kushner's ties to Russia - all in a report from Jessica Schneider and a short Q&A with Anderson. Next was Jonathon Turley and Mark Garages analyzing all of this.

- Vladimir Putin's comments on Russian hacking and interfering with the U.S. election and an interview with Garry Kasparov.

- A clip of Trump's comment "I represent the citizens of Pittsburgh not Paris" and a report from Erynn Gringas on how a few Pittsburghers have reacted. Anderson had a few questions for Gringas before previewing the start of the second hour: "Did Trump Try To Obstruct Justice?".

What was missing from the first hour:

- any mention of today being Anderson's birthday. Thanks ATA for letting me know about the celebration in the second hour.

- any mention of Kathy Griffin, her photo with Trump's head, the backlash and her press conference today. Anderson tweeted his disapproval but being her New Year's Eve co-host for many years and obviously a friend/fan of hers, I was expecting something more from him. At the very least an on-air acknowledgement of Griffin's ordeal this week.

Happy Birthday Anderson!! Hope this year is your best yet!!

I am so mad at Kathy Griffin for first messing up, then sticking her fans on him.

@Jaanza I see and understand what you said about kathy, but did you see the right wing media attacks on Anderson the day the photoshoot came out? Eve Don Jr tweeted Anderson asking him if he supported violence against Trump. And infowars was selling tshirts saying CNN is ISIS. They were taking anderson's silence as support and using it to attack CNN, he had no choice but to make a statement. CNN even lost a sponsor. And Kathy did not make a mistake, she did this on purpose to get attention. Even when her friend Yashar spoke to her after the initial backlash, she refused to apologise. She only apologised once she started losing work. And then called the conference and retracted the apology and threw Anderson under the bus. So now all her fans are attacking anderson on twitter and insta. On his birthday. I am very disappointed in Kathy.

On a sweeter note, seeing anderson cry about getting his AARP card was adorable.

Kathy Griffin looked very distressed during her press conference when she was asked if she'd spoken to Anderson, she said she hadn't and looked as though her world had come to an end--I'm not sure how close they were as friends (he seems much closer to Kelly Ripa) but they did seem to have some strong admiration for each other and Kathy clearly loved and respected AC. I realize AC was under pressure to make some sort of public denouncement of Kathy's photo but I wish he could've just spoken to her privately and not said anything. Cappy, Jaanza and Jen were all so correct when they mentioned how little outrage was expressed when those on the right were attacking President Obama and family for 8 years in the most vile, racist manner. Meanwhile Trump invites Ted Nugent (who threatened death to both Hillary Clinton and President Obama) to the White House and there is little to no outcry. The hypocrisy is huge.

I will miss AC and Kathy G on NYE, they were really fantastic together and stood out from the bland, blah standard NYE shows--you never knew what to expect--I could've just watched them joking around with each other alone without any other guests or segments. I loved how Kathy Griffin always managed to keep AC off-guard and loosen him up a little, they were a fun team--but I realize I'm in the minority here on that subject.

@Pragya - No, I did not see the right-wing mad dogs sic themselves on Anderson because of Griffin's attention-seeking stunt. It doesn't surprise me, however, the mentality of 'guilt by association'.
But it does surprise me to hear Griffin would criticize Anderson. For not sticking up for her in this? Maybe he was pressured by CNN head honchos to tweet that he thought it was disgusting or maybe he would have tweeted that on his own.

It's a messy complicated situation but I still believe Anderson should have acknowledged it on 360. In the past he interviewed Griffin before and after the NYE show and afterwards usually had a segment showing highlights. I don't know any details about Anderson's and Griffin's personal relationship but regarding Anderson's relationship with his viewers he should have said something on 360... even if it was only a 20-second statement of the facts and Griffin's firing from future NYE shows on CNN.

@jaanza I think Anderson was doing Kathy a favor by not mentioning the incident on air. It is not a coincidence that he tweeted that out at 9:45 p.m. because people were attacking him for not talking about it on air. Like Tapper and other CNN hosts did, who denounced Kathy on air.
It was a low move for Kathy to blame Anderson. Especially when he has saved her job many times. She created the mess and put him in an impossible situation. The press conf was a terrible idea. Acc to Brian Stelter, Kathy's team and friends told her not to do it but Bloom insisted.

@aries moon They are actually not close at all. On Andy's show last year someone asked Anderson to choose between Kathy and Kelly, he said Kelly is his best friend while he only sees Kathy once or twice a year. And if you read Andy Cohen's book you will know that Andy HATES Kathy because she is so mean and he doesn't like that Anderson is friends with her.
But what surprised me most about Kathy throwing anderson under the bus was that she has been fired by CNN almost every year after the NYE show for different reasons. Once for saying the F word, another time for the pretend BJ. And she said herself that Anderson always saves her job and gets her back. This time, she did something that put CNn and Anderson's credibiltiy on the line and instead of feeling sorry, blamed him?
I see your point about Nugent, but aries, Nugent does not work for a news network. What if say, MSNBC had hired Nugent and he had talked about killing Obama. Would you have ever trusted MSNBC to be fair to Obama? No. People would have said "Why are you listening to MSNBC, they have Nugent on the payroll." Btw Kathy is very close to Joy ann Reid and Lawrence and has appeared on their shows multiple times this year. I can GUARANTEE she will never be back. there is no way any news org will risk having someone on who joked about assassinating the president. And especially CNN, which is already under attack by Trump and his supporters constantly for being fake and biased.

Btw CNn is ISIS was trending all day today. Infowars was paying people money to be seen with CNN is ISIS signs on tv during the March. Has Kathy apologised for putting CNN through this?

oh you are not the minority at all. I loved NYE with the two of them and I really enjoyed Kathy as a comic despite her history of bullying people. And the sad part is, if Kathy had just apologised and stayed quiet, I am sure Anderson would have got her job back like he has done every year. But she called the press conf and threw him under the bus by leaking those stories to the tabloids. Now I don't think Anderson will ever forgive her.

But I loved that Ellen and Joe and so many people wished anderson on his birthday, was really nice. I am sure ellen is on Anderson's side, she HATES Kathy, hahaha.

@Pragya, I know Kathy put AC in a tough spot, but I'm just tired of right wing hypocrisy and how news organizations always fall over backwards to get rid of a controversial liberal but will hang onto folks like the racist Jeff Lord who may not have held up the severed head of a POTUS but who continue to lie and offend and put out misinformation on a daily basis. CNN is loaded with Trump backers who are far more vile and dangerous than Kathy Griffin because they have a platform to spew out lies that don't always get challenged by reporters. Ever since AC made that comment about how Jeff Lord would defend Trump no matter what, Lord has been on 360 even more than ever and as Cappy mentioned the other day, he's on nearly all the 360 panels and AC treats him with an undeserved deference. Erin Burnett even did an interview with Ted Nugent knowing full well that he threatened Pres. Obama and Hillary Clinton with death. And Trump invites him to the White House. I just wish reporters like AC would've been just as publicly offended and appalled by the disgusting, racist, sexist treatment that Hillary Clinton and Pres. Obama (and family) received as they are with Trump. I don't believe AC would've forgiven Kathy even if she'd stayed quiet after her apology--I think he's overly concerned about his reputation amongst the rabid conservative/Trump supporters who will NEVER accept his apologies or regrets--you can see on Twitter how they are still going after him in spite of his harsh condemnation and rejection of Griffin.

@ARIES MOON: BRAVO....YOU ARE SO CORRECT. CNN HAS GONE OUT OF THEIR WAY TO MAKE AMENDS WITH JEFF LORD AND WHAT BOTHERS ME THE MOST IS ANDERSON'S ATTITUDE. HE'S PROBABLY THE HIGHEST PAID ANCHOR CNN HAS. WHAT HE SAYS HAS WEIGHT. IF HE HELD FAST TO HIS REMARK, CNN WOULD HAVE HAD TO REPLACE LORD....WITH ANOTHER CONSERVATIVE BUT PERHAPS SOMEONE LESS VILE.
NOW LORD KNOWS HE'S BEING CATERED TO AND HE SITS THERE WITH THAT SMUG LOOK ON HIS FACE LIKE, NO ONE CAN TOUCH ME NOW. LIKE SOME BAD KID IN THE CLASS WHOSE PARENT JUST CALLED THE PRINCIPAL
TO TELL TALL TALES "ON THE TEACHER."
IT WILL BE A MIRACLE IF TRUMP "ALLOWS" COMEY TO TESTIFY....ANOTHER ABSURD CONTRADICTION IN FACT.

Anderson got a lot of flak for the Lord comment. And the eye roll. You have to remember that Trump is the president. When he personally gets involved, you have to pay attention. And he got personally involved for Kathy. She wasn't fired until he tweeted about it.

And he didn't speak out about Kathy because he was so disgusted, it's because CNN's reputation was on the line. You know that. I know Cappy likes to believe Anderson is a secret Trump supporter and responsible for every evil in this world, and I know Zucker loved his Trump surrogates, but come on. Already Kathy fans have decided she is the heroine and Anderson is the villain. Trump supporters are still sending him death threats. What can he even do at this point and not get attacked from both sides?

You say he didn't show as much disgust at people attacking Obama (actually he did an hour long special on the "waor on Obama" and several anti-birtherism segments) but did he ever tell an Obama surrogate they would defend Obama if he took a dump on their desk? Did he roll his eyes at a clinton surrogate? Why not acknowledge that too? That things are different now. The media/president relationship has irrevocably changed.

I don think anderson's credibilty, because a journalist without credibility is nothing. and I think he felt genuinely bad about being rude to Lord, because he didn't apologise to Kellyanne. But anyway. I am sure Cappy will still find a reason to blame anderson for being a secret Republican stooge.

aries moon said...

@pragya, Anderson has spent considerably more time being critical of President Obama than not. Yes, I have always given him credit for knocking down the birther nonsense, but there were times during the Obama Administration where he would take on any GOP created non-scandal about Pres. Obama and allow his critics (such as John McCain, Rudy Guiliani and other GOP) a near-nightly platform to go after the President and he seemed more than happy not to challenge them. AC has said that the Obama Administration froze him out after his reporting on the BP Oil Spill, but that is still no excuse for one-sided reporting. AC360 basically took the attitude that every phony Obama scandal needed immediate investigation (none of them turned out to be of any real consequence) and that President Obama cannot be trusted.

As far as how AC treated Obama/Clinton surrogates, whenever he DID have them on, there was no need for eye-rolling or snarky comments, because those surrogates weren't lying, incompetent, incoherent trolls like the majority of Trump surrogates.

The problem with Anderson's apparent admiration of Jeff Lord is that his viewers and MANY people who write about the media think people like Lord who defend the not so credible president to the point of absurdity, there's no point in having them on because they bring nothing to the table, however, AC has said repeatedly that he thinks it's important to have Lord's perspective on 360 and sadly I really believe he means that--and as Cappy said, Lord thinks he's the king of the castle now.

FOLKS: ANDERSON HAS REDEEMED HIMSELF IN MY BOOK. HE ACTUALLY TOOK JEFF LORD ON AGAIN. HE DIDN'T GO AS FAR AS SAYING WHERE TRUMP COULD TAKE "HIS NEXT DUMP," ON ONE OF HIS GOLDEN TOILETS PERHAPS, BUT HE DID CHALLENGE LORD ON SEVERAL ISSUES, INCLUDING TRUMP'S STUPID TWEET TO THE ENGLISH MAYOR OF LONDON. I'VE BEEN TO LONDON 3 TIMES AND NEVER KNEW THEY HAD A MAYOR.
ANDERSON ASKED LORD IF HE HELD RUDY GIULIANI RESPONSIBLE FOR 9/11? ACTUALLY THAT WASN'T A FAIR QUESTION. W. WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR 9/11, BUT THAT'S ANOTHER BOOK.
EVERYTHING DUMBO SAYS IS STUPID AND I'VE YET TO REFER TO HIM AS PRESIDENT. THE LIAR IN CHIEF MADE A FOOL OUT OF HIMSELF IN EUROPE, TO OUR ALLIES AND EVERYONE IN THE FREE WORLD. LIKE DAVID GERGEN SAID TONIGHT: TRUMP WILL BE TESTED....AND THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY WILL REST ON HIS SHOULDERS, WHETHER HE LIKES IT OR NOT. THE BABY MAN WILL FINALLY HAVE TO MAN UP.
