So many Trump administration/GOP scandals out there that could use a good old in depth Keeping Them Honest segment--Betsy DeVos getting rid of the team investigating fraud at for-profit colleges, Trump's suspicious deals with China that smack of bribery, the GOP's scheme to require African American's to work for Medicaid but exempting rural whites from that same requirement, GOP Rep. Blake Farenthold won't pay back the $84,000 owed to taxpayers for his sexual harassment settlement, Trump Administration considering separating migrant children from their parents and placing them in military warehouses, Puerto Rico still struggling from hurricane damage and being ignored by Trump--AC360 used to regularly cover most of the phony Obama Administration "scandals" the right loved to harp on, so how about equal time for these very real scandals of Trump/GOP?

Also, Trump's ongoing corrupt antics tend to distract the media and the public from the Republicans destructive, cruel policies. The GOP will attempt another ACA repeal this month that is even worse than previous versions--the outcry against this latest attempt should be loud and fierce but so far it's barely getting any notice. It's important that we hear as much as possible about Trump/Russia and whatever other corruption he's brought to the White House, but the GOP still need to be watched closely because they are doing lasting damage to this country with the appointment of unqualified, extremist judges who are determined to undo the progress this country has made over the last few decades.

I liked how Anderson spoke up about Trump's inability to apologize and why we should expect basic human decency from our elected officials, but I did not agree when he said that Trump voters are decent human beings who'd expect Trump to offer apologies--that is not true--his supporters love him exactly the way he is--a vile, racist, sexist, crude, ignorant cretin who believes apologies make him look weak--they back him 100 percent and the press needs to stop this fairy tale about Trump voters being appalled by his behavior--it's exactly why they voted for him. He IS them.

Another thing, Steve Cortes is repulsive.

I have realized that the advantage trump has is that there are SO MANY SCANDALS nothing sticks. Like Obama told the one "lie" (keep your doctor), Hillary had her emails and cf, so you hear about them over and over.
but trump has SO MANY that it is hard to keep track and when news tries to cover all of them, no one topic gets enough attention to "stick" Just today there were like 50 things about COhen and Steve Bannon and there was Trump talking about "animals" and Gaza and NK and the EPA corruption and Rudy and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH

do you still think anderson is not covering trump's scandals as much as obama's? the general consensus on twitter seems to be he is covering trump's scandals faar more. And he has called Trump a liar openly which is not something he has done for anyone else.

Personally, I don't understand this sort of criticism from "fans" of politicians when they say that news anchors shouldn't cover X's scandals as much and Y's. They should cover every story. If X has more scandals than Y, that will automatically come across. If anderson gets a story wrong, that is valid criticism, but just saying "I don't like that you reported this story because I like the politician" is just weird. Politicians should not be worshipped. I love Obama but if he messed up, it's a journalist's job to report that. And even after reporting on all the Obama scandals, you can see that he had barely any. Zero major scandals, in fact. And that speaks much more for Obama than say the MSNBC approach where they refused to cover any negative stories about him.

@pragya, yes, it's exhausting, frustrating and infuriating.

@pragya, I didn't think there was much merit to the Obama era scandals that the press focused on then and as you said, time has shown that not much came of them. I didn't like it when AC and others appeared to be covering these scandals simply because the GOP and conservative media were making a big stink out of them and were always on the hunt for something to bring Obama down or smear his reputation. I'm not saying he was faultless or above any criticism, but some of the controversies were amplified by the press far more excessively than necessary. AC360 has done a great job of calling out Trump, I've said that many times here--AC's opening segments have been some of his best work as a journalist. I just want them to also give attention to stories that might get lost in the Trump tsunami of trouble.

I found Friedman to be pretty spot on in his assessment. I would not describe him as trash, @pragya.

@aries moon. The Trump coverage is frustrating. CNN seems to run with one main story every day and ignores much of what's going on. They are still covering Trump like it was the campaign. He's a shiny object saying a lot of shocking things. Let's be outraged at what he tweets today instead of all the major stories coming out of Washington, DC and elsewhere. They are being played by Trump and the country is losing. Thank goodness there are people like Ronan Farrow who are doing real reporting. I'm still waiting for the media to apologize for all the one-sided coverage during the campaign, but that won't happen. Trump is ratings and that's what they are about. After the 2008 and 2012 campaigns the giant panels went away on AC360 but now there's one every night. They talk about the country being divided, but they are feeding into that division with the giant panels.

I miss the old Anderson that used to travel the world to tell the untold stories. Unfortunately, I don't think that Anderson is coming back, especially at today's CNN.

@anon 11:39 PM: you are right in your analysis of CNN and Anderson. Trump is a ratings bonanza.

@anon 11:39, bravo and thank you for saying what I felt about CNN and AC's Trump coverage better than I could. While I do believe AC360 has done really fine work overall covering 45, they can, as you say, tend to overlook what Mitch McConnell and Speaker Paul Ryan are up to with the Republicans in Congress and that's exactly how those two slimeballs want it. The panels can be a bit much but sometimes the only time you might hear about one of those under the radar nightmare stories is when a panelist mentions it in passing to illustrate how rotten the GOP has become. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen as much as it should and instead we get the tweets and shiny objects.

@ll:39 and Aries Moon: and now CNN is doing the same thing with the Royal Wedding. There's nothing to report, because details are under raps, but Anderson will be over in London just to compete with the other cable channels. In the end, whether it is Trump talk or otherwise, it is all about "following the money."

aries moon said...

Yes anon 5:10, it's all about the ratings. I never was all that interested in the Royal Family, although I did like Princess Diana, I'm kinda interested in Harry/Meghan. It's certainly unique in their history.

@Pragya Anon 11:39 here. I need to retract part of my statement on Thomas Friedman. I didn't realize there was more than one part to his interview. His statement about Hamas being responsible for deaths of Palastinians by Israel was pretty far out there.

@Aries Moon: I'm really annoyed that another red state had a school shooting. It interrupted
CNN'S coverage of the Royal Wedding. Wasn't Anderson supposed to cover that from beginning to the end? I used the word "interrupted" lightly because we all know the ending to this story:
find suspect. Interview suspect and those who knew him. Speak about gun control and finally,
Do nothing about controlling fire arms. The NRA issues its usual disclaimer and defends the second amendment and all gun lobbyists.
I also find the pairing of Harry, a royal, with Megan Merkle interesting. It is the combining of two cultures. The fact that she is American born, and is biracial makes her even more intriguing.

@anon 10:07 pm, I am so sickened that there was another school shooting with so many innocent lives lost. You're right, the NRA has a stranglehold on Congress and they won't do a thing no matter how many people die from gun violence. Our only hope is that voters will come out in force and get rid of as many of the NRA lapdogs as possible. Mom's Demand Action, the Parkland students and other activists have actually been having some success in getting some legislative changes regarding gun control. That's the light at the end of the tunnel

I did think AC360 was going to focus on the Royal Wedding, they'd promoted all week. I thought they might spend some time at the end of the show at least on the wedding, instead it was looking like an early Cuomo Primetime preview.
